Jeff Epping, director of horticulture at Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison, said the gardens established a gravel garden along with a rain garden just west of the herb garden in 2010 as part of an effort in to include components of sustainability. Gravel gardens were pioneered in Germany and developed in the U.S. by Roy Diblik of Northwind Perennial Farm in Burlington. The gardens, once established, will need very few resources: no weeding, no watering, and no fertilizing. Diblik helped build the Olbrich gravel garden, topping off existing soil with four to five inches of washed quartzite gravel which doesn't break down quickly like limestone does, preventing weed seed germination. Epping said it was key to choose drought-resistant plants, and space them closer. "You want them to mass up and grow together to create a solid plant bed," said Epping of the process that will take about three years. The only maintenance is to keep organic matter from building up in the garden. Plants Epping and Diblik chose for this garden include the grasses prairie dropseed and purple love grass, Tennessee coneflower, goldenrod and bee balm.' We discovered that elusive monarch we had sighted in the herb garden had preceded us to the gravel garden displaying native plants. The monarch was discovered resting on Culver's root. Despite the abundance of nectar plants, we spotted only this one lone monarch during our stroll through the gardens, not very encouraging for those of us hoping to help prevent continued declines in their numbers due to loss of preferred habitat. Adirondack chairs provide a welcoming spot to rest and observe the activity of busy pollinators in the garden of native plants. This is a photo of the gravel garden when I visited the gardens on a Master Garener bus trip last summer. earlier in the seasonwith grasses playing a more prominent role.

This cultivar of Russian Sage has aromatic, silver-grey leaves, and upright spikes of tiny, violet-blue flowers from mid-summer onwards. At 50-75cm tall, this is the most compact of any Perovskia, so is the best choice if space is limited, or you find the taller varieties get too cumbersome. The blooms are adored by bees and other pollinating insects! Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Little Spire' makes a real impact when planted en masse alongside a path, where the flowers create a haze of purple, and the sage-like fragrance of the leaves can be appreciated. Or, try it alongside other silver-leaved plants, or in swathes in a sunny border. This deciduous sub-shrub really does need sunshine—it doesn’t mind the winter cold. It can also cope with dry, chalky soils and coastal conditions. Perovskia 'Little Spire' makes a wonderful companion to all kinds of late-summer ornamental grasses and perennials. It is best pruned (from the second year) in late March, by removing old branches down to about four buds above the soil. It is also fairly resistant to pests and diseases, making it even more low-maintenance.

Lamorran Gardens, Cornwall, UK: This is a private coastal garden with an interesting and varied collection of statues, sub-tropical planting and a strong Japanese garden theme running through it. Based on the southern slopes of a hill above the Cornish fishing village of St. Mawes, it enjoys a very favorable micro-climate where frosts are rare and sub-tropical plants from the Southern Hemisphere flourish. (The gardens are also known as ‘Lamorran House Gardens’) This series of photos was taken in late August 2002 when I last visited the gardens, just after rain fall. The garden was warm, humid and displayed a splendid variety of foliage in the diffused light. Details: This 4 acre garden consists of zigzag paths winding down a southern facing hillside and passing through densely planted foliage to reveal small enclosed compartments or garden rooms. It has many Japanese garden features, such as lanterns, gravel paths, numerous miniature ponds including a Koi pool and small streams running through it. The many statues are beautifully placed and, together with a small bridge, give in places an Italianate feel to the garden. Wandering through the garden the visitor comes across places where the dense foliage parts to reveal splendid views across the sea. Lamorran Gardens is also quite near the better known and much larger UK National Trust gardens of Glendurgan, Trelissick and Trebah, so it’s easy to combine a visit. All share the same very favorable micro-climate. The garden is open to the public on certain days throughout April to September – see their website for details. Links: A detailed description of the layout and planting in the gardens, together with a map, is given on the Lamorran Gardens website. Location: Lamorran Gardens, Lamorran House, Upper Castle Rd, St Mawes, Cornwall, TR2 5BZ.
