This story starts out like so many…so I met these friends online… Every now and then you follow someone on instagram because she’s sickeningly talented and adorable and wears quirky glasses and he has a handlebar moustache and are they not the cutest couple ever?! Then you assume you’ll forget about them but then you see them again that same afternoon on a blog you’ve followed for years and their work is amazing and you keep seeing these people pop up every place you look. You fall in love with their work over and over again and you start leaving comments on instagram and you like them and they like you and there’s a little trust there and then the magic of the internet starts happening and all of a sudden you are on the phone talking actual words and you hope to one day meet. Then you plan to meet. Because you hear their dream and it sounds so impossibly wonderful and fun and right down your alley that you can’t not get behind it and say YOU HAVE GOT to try this because this changes everything and how crazy would that be? And we are all so excited […]

For an upcoming photoshoot, I am making a slipcover for a new antique French style arm chair.
Back in 2014 I posted Ticking Stripe Fabric Reviews. At that time I tested a variety of ticking stripes all of which turned out to be too light weight, too limp or too narrow for slipcovers. My sea…
First off, I am enjoying my time off this month! No real big plans, just what ever comes up and we feel like doing. Making dinner regularly and baking, cleaning out clothes bins, organizing, working on my "Get it Covered" Advanced Slipcovering guide, running in the snow, shopping, etc. So good to have a breather and not feel the pressure of my normal schedule. Baking Cinnamon rolls is on the list for today (request from Luke). My client picked a grey/cream ticking stripe from www.fabric.com for this chair. I love grey! Her husband still loved their comfy chair 1/2--but the fabric didn't match the updated room. Chair--BEFORE Chair--AFTER-- I had enough fabric to self line the skirt, so it hung nicely. I love the pop of coral from the pillows. I ran some piping down the inside arm to finish it off. Now her whole room matches! SIDE NOTE-- Did a quick change on my bedroom. I wanted to eliminate the mossy green and bring in some brassy gold. Here was my room before http://customslipcoversbyshelley.blogspot.com/2012/01/my-bedroom.html Bedroom--BEFORE Bedroom--AFTER My sister gave me a queen size duvet about a year ago with matching shams--worked out great for a foot warmer and back pillows. I wanted to eliminate the 3 Euro pillows along the back, so I could actually see my headboard. It took a little getting used to, at first it felt like I need 3 back pillows to fill out the King bed. NOW I love the simplicity of it. I sold my turquoise chevron chair and replaced it with this vintage gold arm chair that cost me $20! I sewed some curtains- lining them with a king size flat sheet. I was pretty excited when I realized a flat sheet cut up the center was the exact width and height I need to line my two panels and I could utilize the hem of the sheet. PERFECT!!! I went through my stash and made the gray houndstooth pillows and pieced the front pillow. I was able to use some selvage off some vintage velvet fabric which looked like ribbon to sew down the 2/3rds seams. I also switched out my chandelier with one I found at Restore for $25. I you- tubed and figured out how to install a light fixture and had my 13 yr old son help me, while Heber was at work. I wanted it up and didn't want to wait patiently till Heber was ready to do it. I am loving all the brassy gold stuff! I went thrifting with my sister a few weeks ago and spent $10 on my new end of the hall ensemble (cart included!)

Lorraine loves ruffles and pink and antiques. She wanted to change it up a bit with her couch. Gold couch---BEFORE Couch-- AFTER---tan linen blend with 3x gather on the skirt with 1" of drag. She had some awesome pillows to pull it all together. I love all her collections and antiques. I loved the 3x gather on the skirt...super full and feminine. She wanted it just a tiny bit loose, so I made the band 1/2" taller on cushions and 1" drag on skirt and fit the front of the arms a little bit looser than I normally do. The original couch had piping down the center in between the cushions....so I did the same. SIDE NOTE---- Work studio is coming along....we got new stairs and landing built with my dad's help. I got the doors and steps painted mossy, olive green a few days ago. Tomorrow we are laying the floors (gray laminate wood)! I can't wait to get all moved in. I think I ran up and down the basement stairs at least 15 times yesterday just trying to get the car and trailer loaded for drop offs today. It will be so exciting when I can load straight from my work room to the trailer on the driveway. Making my curtains out of this fabric! My Chandelier got hung this past weekend too! LOVE IT!

Happy New Year Everyone, I apologize for the long delay between posts. The holidays were naturally a blur and well, now the girls are in school I have a little more time to dedicate to my blog. Sadly, our Christmas decorations are packed away for next year leaving the rooms feeling "bare". I arranged a few accessories this morning and played around with a new seating arrangement. I guess the after Christmas decorating and the beginning of the New Year left me feeling like the house needed a fresh start. Our basement and family room certainly received a fresh look. I managed to fit in a challenging sewing project by slipcovering our weathered couch. Since the couch is quite large it takes up a great amount of space and was a big color block for me. Beside the fact it had several holes in the arms and cushions from everyday wear and tear, the olive green shade looked tired. I do however, love the couch, it is very comfortable, classically designed and constructed beautifully. I figured I would try my hand on slipcovering rather than reupholstering professionally and maybe a few years from now we can replace again. Thankfully slipcovers are so relevant these days, especially Linen. I purchased my fabric at Hobby Lobby. It a thick, durable slub linen perfect for slipcovering. A few months back I slipcovered the chair beside the couch in the same fabric. It is holding up well despite the few messes and frequent use. Below is my promised tutorial for slipcovering all upholstered furniture-: An Aside Note: Most of my slipcovered projects are sewn without the use of piping. I personally like the clean sleek look of the "Restoration Hardware" slipcovered pieces. But it is important to note that the piping does bind the fabric seams well and since I opted not to use the piping I reinforced all my seams with zig zag stitching and other decorative stitch settings on my sewing machine. Below are pictures of the stitching I use for the seams and cushions. Supplies Needed: Linen Fabric at least 10 yds. I used 18 yds total for my couch, but this did include slipcovering all the cuchions-6 total on my project. Ruler a great tool for tucking excess fabric into the sides. Pins I used at least a box to shape the arm and create a nice snug fit. Step 1 Pin carefully the shape of the arm of the chair. Placing the pins closely together. This will make the stitching process that much easier with little room for error. Make sure to create a pleated detail on the four corners of the couch. This step will allow the slipcover to fit over the shape with ease without compromising the snug fit. Step 2 Mark with a ruler the placement of seam under the rolled arm as shown below. Snip away extra fabric from step 1. Cut fabric just beneath the curve. This will help shape the arm so the fabric doesn't drape to the floor, but fits snugly around the curves. Step 3 Pin front piece to back piece following a straight line of pins from one top edge to the opposite edge and also pinning the side piece to the back following the curve of the couch. Step 4 Continue pinning the fabric on the other arm and sides of couch and complete the pinning by attaching the bottom front piece to the arms. Carefully remove the pinned slipcover and stitch all pin markings as accurately as possible around all the curves and straight edges. At this point I turned my linen fabric right-side and reinforced all the seams with zig- zag. I gives it a beautiful custom touch and binds the fabric perfectly. Step 5 Properly place the slipcover with cushions and double hem the slipcover. At this point I pressed it well especially on the hem line, stitched the hem in place and pressed again. The cushions were a little flat from use over the years so I added just one layer of batting around the foam. What a difference it instantly made! The End Product after a couple of days of hard work... Picture of my slipcovered pieces on a very dreary day ~ sorry for the rather terrible photo. I hope this was helpful and easy to understand and replicate. Please let me know if you all have any questions. On a different note... a huge thank you for your readership this year. Review of the Birch Lane Montgomery Slipcovered Sofa
This was for a client's son. She called me from Texas and shipped me the fabric. Her son lived locally, and she wanted to redo these chairs for his new place that he'd just bought a few months before. Here are the chairs before....cream velvet from the seventies.... But they were comfortable, swiveled and rocked. Here are the chairs after in a great blue paisley....manly enough for a bachelor pad right? Did I mention his mom is a designer? Another after shot of the front of the chairs together. He also had this great modern oval shaped coffee table, I loved it with the chairs. I also did a little bit of matching along the front. We raised the skirt height to update the chairs a bit. Matching along the front cushion and skirt. I also ran piping down the inside arms, just to polish it off a bit. Side Note---- Hope everyone had a great time this holiday season. I've enjoyed having the past two weeks off work. I cleaned out a junk room and turned it into a guest bedroom...I'll post pics later. I ordered fabric to change things up in my bedroom...the fabric should be here tomorrow!!! I even ended up pulling off a Christmas card last minute with my sisters help...I literally mailed them off 2 days before Christmas. Best part of all....Heber ended up getting Christmas off this year (a guy called him a week before Christmas and needed him to work a trade for him for the next day, and he said if he worked for him, he'd work Christmas for Heber!!!!). Heber is a fireman and has worked the last 3-4 years on Christmas day. So I was SUPER excited that he could have it off. So with the change in plans....we decided to do CHRISTMAS at our Cabin! We wrapped up all the gifts and packed up the kids and headed to the cabin. It was the best Christmas ever.... we chopped down a tree and decorated it, watched Christmas movies, drank hot chocolate, ate cookies, sledded, and the boys were all so good and nice to eachother! We also surprised the boys...their main gift was a trip to Maui as a family....we leave Jan 5th! Despite the frozen drains and 15 degrees when we arrived and Luke's huge bloody nose episode in the middle of the night.....WE had a great time at the cabin! Here is the picture I used for our Christmas Card. Luke didn't want his picture taken. No stress picture, I didn't even pick outfits out...."lower my expectations" has been my theme for the past few months...trying to get through my busy peak season work time.
