This infographic shows the complementary capabilities of select instruments on three of NASA's flagship missions: the Hubble Space Telescope and the currently under development Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope. Hubble views the cosmos in infrared, visible and ultraviolet light, providing a more comprehensive, high-resolution view of individual objects. The Roman Space Telescope will expand on Hubble’s infrared observations specifically, using a much larger field of view to create enormous panoramas of the universe with the same high resolution. Webb will also conduct high-resolution infrared observations, peering across farther stretches of space with a narrower field of view.Credit: NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center || HRJ_Infographic_Final2.png (4560x6680) [20.0 MB] || HRJ_Infographic_Final2.jpg (4560x6680) [5.2 MB] || HRJ_Infographic_Final2_HalfSize.jpg (2280x3340) [2.1 MB] || HRJ_Infographic_Final2_HalfSize.png (2280x3340) [8.8 MB] ||

“Anthropological Note” Albert Nuetzell This cool rocket scene was painted by Albert Nuetzell for the April, 1957 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. It illustrates the story “Anthropological Note,” with colossal, Roman-like ruins across the lone and level sands, in counterpoint to the tiny human visitors and their huge, sleek rocket ship. Like a lot of Nuetzell’s work, there is a touch of the surreal in this picture. The subject is serene, bordering on the abstract. It is gorgeous and functional, and gives us both the transport and the destination for our imaginations. In a way, rockets in the 1950s are not a means to an end, but an end unto themselves. And there is not much distance from science fiction and fantasy to the mythic or surreal. Albert Augustus Nuetzell (1901–1969) was born in New Albany, Indiana. His best work has this hint of Dali in serious rocket settings, but he also had an extensive career doing more typical pulp and commercial art. You can find some of it at www.isfdb.org. His son Charles Nuetzel writes and edits contemporary pulp fiction. This cover was also recycled for a cover of the German magazine, Utopia. IMPORTANT!!! Image is smaller than the paper. There is a white border of about 0.5" for 5x7, 1.3" for 8.5x11, and 1.6" for 11x14. -- Printed on acid free fine art paper with archival inks to last for generations if kept dry and out of the direct sun. -- In a close-fitting, crystal-clear plastic sleeve. -- Cardboard backer. -- Comes with the above story of the image. This restoration is copyright (C) John Philp Johnson. The original art is out of copyright because the pulp magazines did not renew their copyrights, so the work passed into the public domain. We did fundamental restoration work on this image, and that restoration work is what's in copyright, hence the whole restored image, as well as the descriptive text. Thanks for your taking the journey with us! -- John Philip Johnson

Roman Forum Architectural Decorative Details. Layout of city plan. Wall decor. Historic site. The Roman Forum, also known by its Latin name Forum Romanum (Italian: Foro Romano), is a rectangular forum (plaza) surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the center of the city of Rome. Citizens of the ancient city referred to this space, originally a marketplace, as the Forum Magnum, or simply the Forum. Two sided print. Photographs of the Forum taken in the 1920s on the reverse side. The vintage page is in excellent shape. It's two sided but there is no see through. It would look lovely framed and displayed in your study. The Roman Pool at Hearst castle is a tiled indoor pool decorated with eight statues of Roman gods, goddesses and heroes. The pool appears to be styled after an ancient Roman bath such as the Baths of Caracalla in Rome c. 211-17 CE. The mosaic tiled patterns were inspired by mosaics found in the 5th Century Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna, Italy. They are also representative of traditional marine monster themes that can be found in ancient Roman baths. The statues are rough copies of ancient Greek and Roman statues. One such copy represents the “Apoxyomenos.” Statuary was used on a considerable scale in the Baths of Caracalla.
