St. David (DEGUI, DEWI). Bishop and Confessor, patron of Wales. He is usually represented standing on a little hill, with a dove on his shoulder. From time immemorial the Welsh have worn a leek on St. David’s day, in memory of a battle against the Saxons, at which it is said they wore leeks in […]

One of the magnificent stained glass windows found in the Parish Church of St Laurence, Ludlow. St Laurence's, one of England's finest churches, is a member of the Greater Churches Group. Largely rebuilt in the fifteenth century in the soaring perpendicular style of the day, the church has features of the Norman, Early English and Decorated periods, including the delightful hexagonal south porch. It protects a remarkable collection of artistic treasures, including good medieval and later glass, well carved fifteenth century misericords and bench-ends, a fine series of memorials and a superb Snetzler organ. The church has many celebrated stained glass windows, the finest of which is generally agreed to be the Annunciation or Golden Window. The Palmers Window in St John's Chapel shows a version of the legend of King Edward the Confessor and St John the Evangelist. The story is told in eight panels and centres round the Ludlow Palmers making a pligrimage to the Holy Land.

Detail of a north chapel window by Morris & Co, made from designs by John Henry Dearle (Ruth & Naomi) and Edward Burne Jones (Samuel & David, long after his death, reusing cartoons from earlier projects) and installed in 1925. The magnificent former collegiate church of St Editha dominates the town centre of Tamworth. It is an impressively large building of mainly 14th - 15th century date with an imposing west tower (the stump of a former spire is just visible above the parapet), the lower part of which serves as a lofty main entrance and antechamber to the nave. The spacious interior has several fine monuments (including several medieval tombs on the north side of the chancel and a splendid Baroque piece under the tower) and much fine stained glass by Pre Raphaelite artists (Burne Jones & Ford Madox Brown in the chancel, Henry Holiday in the nave aisles), one of the most rewarding displays in any Midland church. The church is generally open to visitors most days between 10am & 4pm.

Detail from the East Window - St Denys Church, York which dates from 1452-55.
Wyck Rissington lies a few miles south of Stow-on-the-Wold just off the Fosse Way. In contrast to it's neighbour Bourton on the Water, Wyck Rissington seems a tranquil haven lost in time. Wyck is a Saxon term for an outlying farm while Rissington refers to a hill covered in brush. The village sprawls along a broad village green for a mile or more with houses set far back from the roadside. A beautiful collection of Cotswold cottages and farms meander past the village pond and down to the church at the end of the village. The church has an attractive new roof with a fine cross on the gable. The building is12th century in origin, the 9ft thick walls at the base of the tower date from this period. The tower itself and the important Early Gothic chancel are 13th century and are probably the work of Eynsham Abbey which owned the advowson at this time An interesting church with many original elements such as the Early Gothic east window arrangement and a magnificent 14th century stained glass crucifix with it's rare green glass cross. Another claim to fame is an association with Gustav Holst who at the age of 17 in 1892-93 became St Laurence's organist, his first paid post. The church and village inhabit a long lost age and are a peaceful place to visit. www.bwthornton.co.uk

Renovations and additions to existing houses are the most common architecturally-designed homes. The challenge with renovations is to incorporate the style and layout of the existing building with the modern needs of the family. When done well, renovations combine the charm of traditional buildings with the conveniences of modern living.
