Dollar store loot! I bet you just hate the dollar store, don’t you? Nope, me neither. There is a Dollar Tree right across the street from my school. In fact, it is on my way home. Every day as I drive by it, I have to make a conscious decision NOT to go to the dollar store. Needless to say, I go to the dollar store A LOT. It is a treasure trove for things that I can use in my classroom! Pool Noodles Why are pool noodles awesome? Simple: Steady Beat Light Sabers. They are very similar to the steady beat swords featured here. For mine, I decided to go all out and use silver duct tape and electrical tape to make them look like they came from a galaxy far, far away. I use my Light Sabers to teach steady beat to 1st graders. 3rd-5th graders use them as giant batons. Holding something so long in their hands helps them to use their wrists and not conduct like a crazy person. Foam The Dollar tree has rolls of foam! Rolls of it! They also have packets of foam. Similar packets or rolls of foam at Wal-Mart cost $5, and who knows what craft stores would charge. Why foam? Why, dear reader, because die-cut machines can cut foam. The foam is more durable than paper, and doesn’t require lamination! I went the paper-laminate-cut route for large quantities of small manipulatives once, and NEVER AGAIN. I learned my lesson! Using foam is so much easier. Students use these shapes to identify the form they hear, or create their own form. Clinging Shelf Liner I love this stuff more than I can tell you. A few years ago, my room made me wince with an ugly scarred table, ugly scratched brown file cabinets, and ugly large bright yellow storage boxes. Now those babies are covered, washi taped, and looking good! I used the same kind throughout the room to make it look unified. Wash-tape Speaking of washi tape, I found some at the dollar store. This is incredibly exciting to me, since most other places are trying to sell them for $3 a pop. The texture is a bit different, but it still comes off with no residue. Count me in! I’m using washi tape to organize my orffatorium. Each instrument has tape, and the matching mallets have the same kind of tape. Using different colors and patterns also allows me to put kids in groups more interesting than woods and metals. Stay tuned for another post on awesome things from the dollar store and how I use them! BONUS: I love these matched cards from the dollar store so much, I wrote an entire post about them.

Welcome to our Music Room! Let me show you around... We are so fortunate to have SMARTboards in our classrooms! I don't know how I could ever teach without one now! Here is our instrumentarium! I am always looking to expand my Orff collection! :) Our Musical Word Wall... More classroom instruments and our music textbooks... Our Music Essential Questions posted... The Music Standards (in kid-friendly language) are also posted for each class. The 4th and 5th graders spend a few minutes during each class learning about various composers each month. They are just now finishing up a study on John Williams. They really enjoy learning facts about each composer, listening to their compositions, and playing Composer Jeopardy at the end of each study. Each class has a chance to earn stickers for good behavior each time they come to music. After they earn 6 stickers, they receive a class karaoke party! Fun times! I hope you enjoyed the tour! Check back soon for more updates on the Music Room fun!
Practical tips for organizing and setting up your music room. Ideas for arranging your furniture for multiple classroom activities, DIY storage solutions, planning for transitions (singing to writing, dancing to sitting, etc…). This post is crammed full of ideas from a veteran music teacher.
The MUSIC Room The size shown on the door is 19" wide x 72" tall. The MUSIC Room decal features many of the subjects studied in Band and Orchestra. If you would like this to be HORIZONTAL instead of vertical, please put that in the Personalization field. The icons will be turned to accommodate. Please measure your door to determine the correct size for you. Most classroom doors are approximately 36" wide to allow wheelchairs to enter easily. Please select a color and size from the drop down menu. Color shown is King Blue. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ I use the best vinyl available, Oracal 631, for this design. It is rated for 3 years outdoors and lasts indoors for 10+ years. Vinyl lettering looks like it was professionally painted. It has a matte finish and is easy to apply. It is also easy to remove without damage to walls and other surfaces. However, it cannot be repositioned or re-used. It adheres best to clean, dry, smooth surfaces: painted walls, glass, metal, doors, cabinet doors, plastic, sanded wood, tile, cell phones, laptops, car windows, etc. Small color samples are available on request. Each order comes with small vinyl samples (so you can practice) and an applicator card. For perfect placement most orders have several "+" signs across the top which are center and level marks. For orders with multiple colors, triangles are placed in the design for perfect alignment as shown in the last picture for those listings.
I think I am finally done with my classroom for this year! It was so much easier the second time around! Here are some pictures! First, my new curtains! I reused some sheer panels from last year and made 2 panels from fabric we found at Wal-Mart. The valence is actually a vinyl table skirt that we found at a going out of business sale! It already had the peel and stick feature so all we had to do was cut it off to fit the window. The ukulele cart is now between the windows. I added a vinyl sticker that my husband bought for me. Last year, I had an old tv on a wooden cart there. After an entire year of not using it, I gifted it to another teacher in need. So, I had a big open space to fill this year. This was on the first day getting back into my room. Thanks to Pinterest, I am using book covers on the backs of my chairs to house pencils, expo markers and erasers. I think that will save time when transitioning between activities. Also, the cabinets I covered in a scene-setter background last year are now serving as an additional bulletin board. I covered them with a vinyl tablecloth and used magnetic tape to attach my border! Very Easy!! Thanks to Cara at Miscellaneous Me for the anchor charts! These are so great and fit my classroom perfectly. You can get them from her blog here. My piano will work so much better here! BUT, I needed wheels so I could roll it out. The scooters were just for moving purposes but it gave me a great idea.... Furniture movers! I found these at Big Lots for $9.00! And they are the perfect size! When I looked at an actual piano mover/roller/cart, I could get one for $350.00! I'm also loving the new cover on the piano bench. I love that pattern. I bought these genre posters last year and placed them above my board; however, that was just too high to use them. So, this year they are more accessible and I'm so glad. They will really help during the 6th grade History of Rock unit. I debated about using Recorder Karate and finally decided to try it. I didn't want to go overboard with the karate theme so it is very subtle. Again, thanks to Pinterest, I found so many recorder resources so I didn't have to reinvent the wheel! (which has made my summer so much more relaxing) Thanks to... Lauren at Rhythm and Glues for the recorder fingering charts. You can visit her blog here! Emily at The Sweetest Melody for the Recorder Job Lanyards. You can visit her blog here! The recorder rules picture from Pinterest! See it here! (If it is yours, let me know so I can give credit!) I created an 11x17 chart to keep up with who has passed off which belt. You can write the students' names in the blanks and fill in the appropriate box once they have passed off that song. Download it here. I also made a chart that lets everyone know which song correlates with which belt. I had a fear that students would be asking a million questions about this so I made this chart. You can download it here. My choir section of the board. I included the choir tips charts and the singing shapes posters as well as a dry erase calendar from the Dollar Tree. Finally, the ukulele section of my board. This one is not totally complete. I kinda just stuck it up there. I have my student expectations and the 4 chords we are going to (hopefully) master. Also, love that little ukulele chihuahua. My one and only formal bulletin board. I wanted to use birds in my room this year so I am calling them song birds. Song birds sing solfege so their word bubbles are do, re, mi. I made the birds from scrap paper that matched my theme with inspiration from Carson Dellosa's Boho Birds (they kinda scared me a little...weird eyes) Here is a close up of the poster in the middle. I want to print it 11x17 but that requires a trip to Office Depot. I'll get to it... This came from here! My door!! I kinda love how it turned out! I wanted to do an advocacy type door for Back to School Night when parents will be buzzing about. I just cut out a thought bubble from poster board, added some letters and cut out some question marks. Here is an up close of the answers to the question! You can download them here! Unrelated to my room, are these two pictures. The guidance counselor and I have teamed up to make a bulletin board for parents and students to identify ways they can get involved. I added band and choir and she wanted to include a Get Fit program. Between the two of us, we came up with other programs we already had at school to include on our board. Also, the librarian and I came up with a no curtain, no blinds, no sew, window covering for her windows in the library. We coordinated our fabrics, covered cut pieces of foam board, attached the fabric with no sew double sided fabric tape and stapled the corners (essential upholstering the foam board). We cut the board the exact size of the window so the squares fit snug in the window.
My 2018-19 classroom is FINALLY finished! Oh, who am I kidding? I’ll probably change it next week! I’m so excited to share my classroom with y’all! I try my best to make my classroom cozy and comfortable. I want to make sure that my kiddos have a safe and nourishing place to come each week. Plus, during the school year, I spend more time in my classroom than I do at home. I wasn’t kidding before, I change things around ALL the time. So, by Christmas my classroom may look completely different! My classroom is pretty small, so I have to make the most of the space we have. Last year, I switched to full flexible seating in my music room. I have spaces around the room that not only have flexible seating options, but make stations and small groups much easier. Even when we aren’t working in small groups, my kiddos can use the “fun seats”, as we call them. It gives them a chance to find a spot that works best for them. It is interesting to see which students choose which seats, or choose to work in groups or alone. It gives a lot of insight […]

I’ve been asked several times about how I go about creating posters and resources for my classroom so, today, I would like to describe that process to you as well as highlight some tools I us…
Wow! I can't believe I am already back in school. What an amazing, but fast, summer it has been?! Now that the 2016-2017 school year is upon us, I have some exciting news to share. This school year, I am teaching at a new school, in a completely new city! Even though it was bittersweet, I left my job at four elementary schools, and I have accepted a job for ONE elementary school. Yes, I have ONE room to get ready this year. I get to drive to the same place EVERY day, and I get to see my same students EVERY week! I couldn't be more excited. And another great thing about my new job?! I am just teaching kindergarten through 2nd grade. Ekk! I am silently squealing inside! With a new school, comes a new classroom! I was so excited and eager to get started on making my classroom home! My new room features storage, storage, and more storage. It makes this teacher heart so happy. My abundance of storage features wall to wall cabinets and a large storage closet for program props and supplies. As I greeted my new students into my classroom this week, a kindergartener said, "This place is magical!" I have to agree. Welcome to my magical music room! As I entered my new music room for the first time, I was greeted with the 10' 9'' X 13' 1" Noteworthy Rug. I had requested it after I was hired, and I was thoroughly shocked when I saw that package in my room! Ekk! It is such a life saver for kindergarten classroom management. Also, since I am in a Primary School and the students are small enough to fit on the rug, I decided to get rid of all my chairs so I had space for movement. All of my students can nicely fit on the rug in their very own square! Over the summer, I purchased a Silhouette Cameo. I used it to cut out the words, "Sing, Say, Dance, Play." I also cut out the same phrase in white vinyl and stuck it over my door! In the front of my room, I used my crate seats for storing masks, movement props, scarves, and puppets. With these items in the front of the room, I can conveniently find them, and they just add come cuteness! They also serve as seating. My class rules are posted above the crates. They are posted at the perfect level for my primary kiddos to easily see. With having 24 classes of primary grades, I wanted to create a system that was quick and easy for students lining up. After searching Pinterest, I decided to add these numbers to my tiled section of my floor. I made the numbers, printed them, laminated them, and then I used contact paper to stick to the floor. There is the perfect amount of space between each student to stand without touching each other. Now that we are entering the second week of school, my students already have their number memorized. I can just say go to your number, and they know exactly where to go! This year I decided to slightly change my classroom management system. This year I added letters on my board that spell "Music." Each time a rule is broken, I take a letter away. If a class has all of their letters on the board by the end of class, I move their class clothespin up two keys on the Piano Rewards board. If one letter is taken away, they get to move up one piano key. If more than two letters are taken away, they do not get to move. Once their class clothespin is on the Piano Rewards board, they compete against the other classes to reach the end of the piano first. If they are first, their class gets a prize! Below is a picture of the Piano Rewards board. I used command hooks to attach the cute buckets on to the bulletin board. The "I Can" bulletin, posted above, features three laminated sheets. I use a dry erase marker and write each "I Can" statement on them for the week. Here is my Word Wall bulletin. I color coordinated each card for a specific grade level. My favorite part of this bulletin is the organization of the word wall cards. I hole punched each card and attached them in alphabetical order with a binder clip. I then used a command hook to attach them to the side of the board. One of my favorite classroom features are my life-size Melonheadz Music Kids! I discovered this amazing website called "Block Posters." It takes any image and tiles it into regular sheets of paper. Then you print, cut, and tape together. It is so easy, and it is FREE! Check out a full tutorial here! My Grungy Edition Alphabet Banner is hung above the kids. We are also required to have two phrases posted in our room: "Do the right thing," and "Treat people right." Those two quotes are on each side of the kids. On my board, I posted my new Curvy Solfege Signs. I attached each one with binder rings and added a ribbon on top. I just LOVE how they turned out! This year I created a pencil station for my primary kiddos. There are five quick reminders posted above the Sharp and Dull buckets! This year I also labeled EVERYTHING! And when I say EVERYTHING, I really mean it. Every drawer, every basket....I forgot to take picture of the inside of my cabinets, but I am telling you, everything is labeled! Here are my color-coordinated art caddies. Since they are so cute, I have left them on top of my counter. Even the scissors match the caddies! Last year, I had my Boomwhackers attached to the wall with velcro. Since my walls were freshly painted at my new school, I didn't feel comfortable sticking up 10 feet of velcro. This year I decided to use these labeled buckets that I found at Dollar Tree. I wish they were going low to high, but I have to have the biggest Boomwhacker set up in the corner for stability. I hope you enjoyed my classroom tour. I have already had a fantastic start to the year in my new school, and I hope you do too! Thank you for visiting my magical place!
