This is it, you guys. No more hints or sneak peeks or last last minute adjustments. Here we go. [deep breath] Introducing... my new cosplay: Utini! If you're not entirely sure what you're looking at - well, mission accomplished! - but let me explain: John and I have been working these past months to transform 5-foot-tall me into a 4-foot-tall Jawa. And just to up the ante a bit, we decided THIS Jawa has managed to capture a special prize. The pack is stuffed full with scavenged bits of technology and dismembered droids: If you can read Aurebesh, you'll also note this particular duffel was either stolen or recovered from Watto's Shop on Tatooine: BB-8 barely fits inside the top of the pack, and the remnant of the net our Jawa used to capture him hangs in tatters around the edge: The back view: Those are more wires poking through a hole at the bottom. But what you REALLY need to see are these two in action. So here's our latest motion test: (Turn on your sound!) It starts out a little rough - I'm still getting the walk down, so my foot shows once and I stepped on the robe, oops - but I was doing better by the end! Have you guessed all our secrets? Now I'll answer what I expect will be the most FAQs: - Yes, I can see. Sort of. (Ha!) - I look out the crack between BB-8's head and body. I'm wearing a Daredevil-like face covering to hide my eyes and skin. For photos I tip my head down, though, eliminating the crack entirely. - I wear BB-8's head like a helmet, which is how I control his movement. - I control the Jawa's head much like I did Junk Lady's; there's a PVC rod from the base of his head extending into the bag. I can turn and nod the head. I've been practicing to make it as lifelike as possible - how'm I doing? - My entire body is in the bag, with only the very bottom of my legs extending into the robe. The Jawa's body is hanging from a PVC frame in front of me. - Everything you see John and I handmade from scratch. From wiring the Jawa's eyes to hand-dying the monk's cloth for her robe, we did all the sewing, painting, framing - even the bandolier is handmade from old vinyl. Plus you've already seen how we made BB-8 from paper maché and Bondo, right? - The entire cosplay breaks down into 4 pieces, and it takes John approximately 6 minutes to kit me up. - We can take it off again in just over 1 minute. (Of course we've timed it.) - It weighs 24 pounds, but thanks to the rig underneath is fairly comfortable to wear. (I'll post build photos later, if you're curious.) - I don't control the sound; that's a custom playlist John put together, played through a wireless speaker attached to the rig. - For ventilation we have a fan in the very bottom of the pack, plus one more hanging around my neck. The older I get, the more these things matter. :D Lily remains ever unflappable. Tonks, on the other hand, ran for the hills. And now, a short - and completely non-canonical - backstory by John: During Episode 8 Rey and Luke return to his home planet of Tatooine for some important intel. While there they are ambushed, and during their escape BB-8 is damaged and presumed lost. The next morning the local Jawa shaman, Twevo Deetum, discovers BB-8 trapped in a smoking crater. She quickly captures the protesting droid and stuffs him into her pack, already brimming with junk and droid detritus she'd scavenged earlier from the ruins of Watto's Shop. As Twevo returns to her ship she spies some travelers inquiring about a lost BB unit. Perhaps this will be a good payday after all... :D Now, what IS canon is that Jawas have shamans, which are female, and Jawas in general are quite strong. In his notes, anthropologist Hoole referred to an incident where he witnessed Jawas defending the Shaman's home from Tusken Raiders with the ferocity of beings twice their size. BB-8 only weighs 22 pounds, so even a pack of 60 pounds or more would be manageable for a Jawa this size. Did we think this through? Yes, yes we did. Unlike Junk Lady we don't have a rolling cart for this cosplay, so all the weight is on me when I wear it. I'm also the only one who can wear it, since everything is custom made to my exact height and shape. (John's a little jealous.) Speaking of height, the entire thing is less than 6 feet tall, so no more worrying about getting through doorways! Here at home we built the costume on a wooden T stand John made from 2X4s: I'm trying to convince John to build some kind of collapsible stand to bring with us to cons, but in the meantime, it takes up very little room on the floor: So there you have it, peeps! John and I will be debuting Twevo the BB-8 catcher at Star Wars Celebration this weekend, so keep an eye out if you're going! I plan to do a test run on Thursday afternoon, and we'll also be out on Saturday if the crowds aren't too crushing. If I'm having fun I could be out the other days, too; just depends on my stamina, so we're playing it by ear. If there's enough interest I'll post a detailed build log later, so you can see how the harness and rig work inside. This kind of base could work for lots of other cosplays, so I'm hoping this sparks some inspiration out there! Feel free to ask questions in the comments, and stay tuned for my Star Wars Celebration coverage. (Never fear, I'll still be out of costume enough to take ALL the pictures. I can't wait!)
