Inspired by a photo, I set out to build a Gerrit Rietveld Steltman Chair. Apparently, it was Rietveld's last chair design. (See links at the end for more information about both the designer and the chair.) Most of my dimensions are close to the original chair. However, I chose to add about 2 inches to the height, and I raised the seat by the same amount. This first photo shows the planned dimensions and sequence of construction (A through I) as well as what really happened along the way. I chose cedar 2 x 4's -- which were really 1 1/2 x 3 3/4. After a kind friend with access to a table saw took 1/8 off of both sides, my boards ended up to be 1 9/16 x 3 5/16. Construction began with cutting 5 segments to build the 16 x 16 seat. Next came the opportunity to use my new biscuit joiner! Construction continued with a combination of biscuit joints, pocket screws and glue. Boiled linseed oil brings out the natural color and designs in the cedar. Here's the finished project, polished with carnauba wax. It's fun to view the chair with the "floating seat" from different angles. The Steltman chair is the last chair Gerrit Rietveld designed at the age of 75. With this design he once again proved his status as a pioneering designer. The chair owes its name to the The Hague jeweller and royal purveyor Steltman who commissioned Rietveld in 1963 to rebuild and furnish his shop at in The Hague (Netherlands). Rietveld designed the Steltman chair as two mirrored chairs, placed in front of a showcase with jewellery where customers could select their wedding rings. This way the chairs also acquired a symbolic meaning: two separate, opposite forms that together form a unity. The asymmetrical chair, which produces a surprising image from every angle, is made up entirely of lines and planes. The Steltman is typical of Rietveld’s design ideas and is now a true design classic! This Steltman chair version is upholstered in high quality wool felt in one of the De Stijl colours, primary yellow.

Dutch designer Gerrit Rietveld's Steltman chair is furniture as sculpture. Originally designed in 1963 for the Steltman Jewelry Store, now recreated to be used outdoors (or indoor if you"d like). The chair is an intriguing asymmetrical design inspired by the De Stjil art, architecture and design movement. Matching size and proportions of Rietveld's original design and made to order in USA from solid clear western red cedar with hidden dowel joinery. Cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insects, and weathers to a nice light gray over time. If preferred, you can always finish with a transparent stain to your liking. less
