This one got a little complicated and a bit of a muddle, but here it is, warts and all. I really must try to keep these simpler! Barely a week ago the temperature in Los Angeles was over 100. But now, suddenly, Autumn has come, bless'er. A fine fall day

So this week I'm going to do my sketchbook entries on the theme of love, because, you know, Valentine's Day. My first entry is an ode to my maternal Grandma, Beatrice Helen Birdsong, who was like a magic fairy to a bunch of odd and sometimes troubled kids. 7 days of love: Grandma
I've been busy with these family portraits for a while now, but I'm finally all caught up! Here is the final painting, ready to ship north. Alameda is an island off of the coast of Oakland. A big "thank you" to Laura S. for asking me to do this project and for being so great to work with! Alameda family, the finished painting. 12 x 16 on birch panel. Work in progress... The sketchbook

Ever look in the fridge to find a bunch of old ideas nearing their expiration date? Here's a journal page I never got around to posting. Leftovers get no respect! Leftover ideas
For this Halloween, I'm doing a series of paintings in my journal that I fondly call "Spirits of October." Here's No. 2. He sailed away but forgot to sail back. Spirits of October, No. 2 | Dear Departed Cap'n

My friend, Yvonne, sent me a photo of an Argon tree filled with foraging goats. Since I do love goats (doesn't everyone?) I was immediately moved to give it my take. It's a goat tree Version 2, to-do list obliterated
I lived in New York City for nearly 10 years, first working as an art director on the now-defunct Ladies Home Journal, and then as a freelance illustrator. I adored the freelance life! Especially wandering the streets while everyone else was working. Footlight Records was a wonderful place in Greenwich Village, a record shop specializing in vintage vinyl — broadway shows, classic jazz, vocals. Nearby I could buy a slice of white pizza. Around the corner, the Strand Book Store. Footlight Records, Greenwich Village
Here's another image finished, and how it popped out of my brain. I started out wanting to simply draw a vintage pink radio, but somehow, a fox terrier showed up. This and many other of my paintings and journal pages are available as limited edition giclee prints in my Etsy shop. As a thank you for visiting my blog, I'm offering a 20% discount on any of my prints to shouldawoulda blogspot visitors. Just use the code SHOULDA at checkout, good until August 8. Many of the items I have listed will be going away after the 8th when they'll be sold exclusively in Treehaus in Los Angeles. Thank you for visiting my blog, and for your kind comments. A big THANK YOU also to fellow blogger Myra Caballero for nominating me for the Liebster Award. You can find her excellent blog here. Radio. Gouache on 9x12 wood panel. I recently painted this portrait of a cat named "Tablu" (so-called because she's a tabby with blue eyes). Here she is, perched upon her favorite pillow. This was commissioned through my Etsy shop as a birthday gift for a kitty-loving husband. "Tablu" Portrait of a kitty
At last I have some time after a couple busy weeks to get back to some "serious" painting. Friedrich
I do love to paint rainy days. It seemed like only yesterday I started this one, but it's been a over a week. It was cooler and rainier then, unlike the 90 degrees of today. Whenever it rains, I become soup obsessed. Soup run, Spring 2018

I haven't forgotten that the whole point of this challenge was to celebrate Halloween. So... why shouldn't a cat have a pet bat to promenade around the neighborhood on a crisp autumn day? Black-cat-a-day No. 12: Nice day for a walk
Last year, Stephanie Birdsong decided she was going to challenge herself to do "A-Black-Cat-A-Day" in her sketchbook for the entire month of October and the result was absolutely adorable.

My first completed piece of 2016. Here's a new fabric design for spoonflower. The theme is Rock & Roll. I'm temporarily calling this rock junkie. Don't ask me why. You can see all of the entries in the weekly challenge here, and vote for your favorites! Rock junkie on Spoonflower
