Today's free lesson plan is a great one for 2nd graders. It's on a long, thin piece of paper so it really makes them think about composition as they draw. And it mixes watercolor paints with tempera paints and I always love that combo. I want to share projects that I have found to be successful additions to my vault of lessons, but I don't claim that any of these lessons are mine and mine alone, so if you recognize them, send me a message and I'll give credit where credit is due! Please - read, print, share and enjoy! ~Amy
Disney movies have some very deep lessons to teach kids. Zootopia lesson plans are perfect for teaching kids about bias vs. sterotypes.
I do not usually have very much student work to display since my students' "work" happens during our class performances. However, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to show off the 4th and 5th grade Stomp Projects. Each group completed a worksheet to show the rhythms they chose, the instruments they played, and an explanation of their performance. The students really enjoy finding their group's work in the display and checking out all of the pictures! Update: After many requests, I have decided to share my Stomp: Trash Percussion Group Project! Click here if you would like to download a copy. :)

In lesson one, we got acquainted with this wonderful piece of music. Now we will have some fun as we examine the elements that helped create the piece: rhythm, tempo and dynamics. The picture you see is a graphic illustration of this music - a music map. You'll need to print out the three pages. The task now is to first focus on how this music repeats over and over a very simple rhythmic pattern. Ti-ti ti-ti ti-ti ta, ti-ti ta, ti-ti ta, Ti-ti ti-ti ti-ti ti-ti ti-ti ti-ti ta. The task for this lesson is to be able to "follow the dots" on the chart until Peer Gynt finds himself safely out of the mountain. By the time you have done this enough to be able to touch each dot without getting so excited by the music that you get silly about it, you will know that rhythmic pattern well. Remember, you MUST touch each dot along the way, hopping from dot to dot, not just sliding your finger along the path! IMPORTANT NOTE: Pages 1 and 2 repeat THREE times before you do the final page. I prefer this version without the vocals as you do this exercise. The beginning is really soft so you have to listen carefully. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRpzxKsSEZg&feature=related Now, that you have accomplished this first part, it is time to discuss this question: How could this composer keep repeating the same pattern over and over and yet we were never bored? If I was talking to you and I keep saying the same thing, over and over and over, you would die of boredom. But this piece is exciting. Why? This will lead to a discussion of tempo (the speed of the music) and dynamics (how softly or loudly the music is played) The children will figure those two things out without your help. It is so obvious. It is your job to introduce them to the correct musical terms. You may enjoy printing out the rhythm, tempo and dynamics posters for future reference.

Photo Source: www.instructables.com | Mike Warren Found this SUPER awesome post by Nikkala of The Crafting Chicks and had to share some of the fantastic preschool science ideas she unearthed for "science camp" with her kiddos! Give them a try or put them in your inspiration folder for future use - you won't want to miss out! DIY Magnetic Silly Putty {shown right} With a few simple ingredients, your kiddos will be amazed as the familiar malleable compound they may have played with on numerous occasions becomes suddenly magnetic! Explore how different types and strengths of magnets affect the putty, discussing the results with you mini-scientists. You might even consider creating putties of various magnetic strengths by adding different amounts of the ferrous {magnetic} component to each. Whatever you play and exploration dictates, it's sure to be a blast! Photo Source: www.playbasedlearning.com.au Walking Water Nikkala found this fun experiment at Sherry & Donna's fabulous preschool blog, Irresistible Ideas for Play Based Learning. Simply using two plastic cups, a strip of paper towel, and colored water, your kiddos will be amazed as they watch the paper towel absorb and siphon the water from the first cup to the second cup. Lots of fantastic new vocabulary to be learned, procedures to follow {to the letter}, and fun to be had with this experiment - who wouldn't like to tell their family and friends that they made water "walk"! Be sure to visit Irresistible Ideas for the full experiment workup. These are just two of the fantastic explorations, activities, and experiments Nikkala has planned for "Science Camp 2011". Be sure to follow the link back to The Crafting Chicks to check out her full post and her Pinterest page!
Escape rooms and breakout activities are all the rage right now! And for good reason; they encourage movement, collaboration, and problem solving. These activities tend to be geared toward older kids, but what if I told you they are awesome to use with younger students, as well? I've taken the concept of an escape room and simplified it to make it appropriate for Pre-K and kindergarten students. Each game has options for playing as a whole group, small group, or even individually. Depending on the activity, I also offer options for differentiating as needed. I made them flexible enough that you can play them in one session, or over several days, depending on the amount of time you have and on the attention span of your students. Each game has a story line to follow, so kids can really engage with the activity and activate their imaginations. I chose a specific skill to target with each game, making this is a great way to give kids a chance to practice and demonstrate understanding of a certain skill. Escape the Apple Cider Stand focuses on matching numbers to quantities. There are four activities: matching cards with pictures of apples to apple crates with numbers, writing numbers of objects in a ten frame (options for writing and tracing included, depending on the level of your learners), filling ten frames to match numbers, and a "write the room" activity to match the number of objects in each picture to the correct numeral. Find it here in my shop or here in my Teachers Pay Teachers store. Escape the Pumpkin Patch focuses on rhyming. There are four activities or puzzles for students to solve: matching rhyming pictures, generating rhymes, finding objects that rhyme, and a rhyming "write the room" activity. (Find it here in my shop or here in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.) Escape Room: Thanksgiving! works on sequencing. The story is about preparations for Thanksgiving dinner, and the activities focus on ordinal numbers and putting steps in order, which is great for building listening comprehension skills. The activities are cut and paste sequencing, putting step cards in order, pocket chart sequencing activity, and a "write the room" activity. (Grab it here in my shop or here in my TPT store.) Escape the North Pole may be my favorite one yet! What 4- or 5-year-old kid wouldn't love to be part of a story about helping Santa get ready for Christmas? This escape room focuses on shapes. The four activities are identifying and coloring by shape, drawing shapes (includes an option for tracing for kiddos who need it), matching shapes, and a shape "write the room" activity focusing on shape attributes (with an option for differentiation included). Get it here in my shop or here in my TPT store. These activities are so much fun, and I really tried to make them as simple as possible for you, with no special locks or boxes required. All you provide are some manila envelopes to hide the clues and puzzles in. And of course, each one includes clear setup instructions. More great escape rooms are in the works! Check out my growing bundle to get the 4 listed here, plus 8 future breakout activities, for one low price! The price will go up each month as a new escape room is added, so buy early to save the most money! I hope you enjoy trying out these activities with your students; I would love to hear how it goes in your classroom!
