Sop seeds for happy gardens. Sunflowers are remarkably hardy and easy to grow. It's a joy to watch them turn their heads as they follow the movement of the sun across the sky. Their bright yellow blooms make great cut flowers and they're also attractive to bees and birds. Illustration by local Norwich, Norfolk artist, Ruth Howes. Printed on recycled paper.

Sunflower 'Vanilla Ice' stands apart from our other sunflower varieties as it is a cultivated form of Helianthus debilis, a species native to the coastal regions of the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states. While it can thrive as a perennial in warmer climates, it also adapts well as an annual in colder regions. The distinguishing feature of 'Vanilla Ice' is its unique cream-colored blossoms adorned with chocolate-colored centers encircled by radiant golden yellow halos. This sunflower variety is not only suitable for home gardens but also lends itself beautifully to mass plantings. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, 'Vanilla Ice' serves as a magnet for native bees and butterflies, making it a pollinator-friendly choice. Additionally, its seeds provide nourishment for birds. Notably, these sunflowers are resilient, with drought and salt tolerance, making them excellent stabilizers for sandy soils. Whether you're looking to enhance your garden's visual appeal or contribute to local wildlife, 'Vanilla Ice' sunflowers offer a versatile and ecologically valuable addition to your landscape. Helianthus debilis, commonly known as the beach sunflower or dune sunflower, is a native plant species found in the southeastern United States, particularly in coastal areas. Here are some key characteristics and information about Helianthus debilis: Appearance: Beach sunflowers are herbaceous perennial plants that typically reach a height of 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm). They have lance-shaped leaves and produce bright yellow, daisy-like flowers with prominent dark centers (disc florets). The flowers resemble those of traditional sunflowers but are smaller. Habitat: As the name suggests, beach sunflowers are often found in coastal environments. They thrive in sandy soils, dunes, and other well-drained, sunny locations. Their ability to tolerate salt spray and thrive in sandy soils makes them well-suited to beachfront areas. Range: Helianthus debilis is native to the southeastern United States, including states like Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and parts of Alabama and Mississippi. It's well-adapted to the coastal regions of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Blooming Season: Beach sunflowers typically bloom in late spring through early fall, producing a profusion of bright yellow flowers that attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. Ecological Role: These plants play a role in stabilizing coastal dunes and preventing erosion. They are also important as a source of nectar for pollinators and as a food source for birds and other wildlife. Their ability to thrive in sandy and often challenging conditions makes them valuable in coastal restoration efforts. Cultivation: Beach sunflowers can be cultivated in gardens and landscapes, especially in regions with a similar climate to their native range. They prefer well-drained soil, full sun, and regular watering until established. Once established, they are relatively drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. Growing Instructions 1. Prepare a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. Water the mixture so that it is moist but not wet. 2. Put the seeds on the soil. 3. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. 4. Water the seeds. 5. Place the pots in an area with warm temperatures in full sun or part shade. 6. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.

The blooms are about 4” across and do not need to be deadheaded to continue blooming, but can be groomed for tidiness, and also makes a great cutflower. This plant blooms several weeks longer than similar sunflowers due to its semi indeterminate to determinate habit. Great for pollinators and will pump blooms all season and well into the fall for a great seasonal pop of color. Maintenance Notes: Great in average and rich soils, but also capable of growing in poorer soils and tolerant of dry conditions once established. A controlled release fertilizer application at the time of planting should be sufficient for the summer, however, a second application of controlled release fertilizer applied in mid-summer should increase bloom number and keep the plant producing longer. Daisy-like cosmos flowers are easy-to-grow and versatile annuals. They can be used to plug gaps in borders, grown as a feature in their own right or as part of a container display. The flowers attract a variety of bees, butterflies and hoverflies, and also make a good cut flower. Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Xanthos’ is a compact variety with banana-yellow flowers and that signature dissected cosmos foliage. Lovely as part of a border or growing in pots and containers where it’ll provide masses of flowers from midsummer to the first frosts.

ProCut White Lite - Sunflower Seed / Single Stem Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) ~ DESCRIPTION ~ Attractive pale, creamy yellow petals and a light golden-green center, this blonde beauty is sophisticated enough for use in wedding flowers and sturdy enough for market bouquets. Color innovation in a professional-quality, single-stem sunflower Every bit as early and reliable as the other well-known ProCut colors. Single-stem plants have tall, strong stems and 4–6", pollen-less blooms. Tip: for special occasions like weddings, light-coloured petals are slightly more susceptible to damage by insects. To avoid insect damage, we encourage harvesting blooms just as they begin to open and storing until they open to the desired appearance. Sunflowers attract bees and other pollinators and birds will enjoy eating the seeds! ~ HOW TO GROW ~ Starting Outdoors(recommended): Sow 1/2" deep, after last frost. Start Indoors: Sow seeds 1/2" deep and 2-3 weeks prior to planting outside. Handle gently, as plants dislike root disturbance but sowing indoors and transplanting out is good way to have early sunflowers in garden. *DO NOT PINCH plants. Pinched single-stem sunflowers will produce low-quality blooms or no blooms at all. Please note: Flower size and stem diameter are controlled by plant spacing, temperature, soil type, and day length. ~ DETAILS ~ Non GMO Plant type: Annual Light preference: Sun Days to germination: 7-14 days at 70-75°F (21-24°C) Height: 60–72" Plant spacing: 4-6" Soil: Light, well-drained soil. Excessive nitrogen may cause plants to grow too vigorously with abnormal flower shapes. Seeds per packet: 10 seeds Harvest: Flowers can be harvested tight, when color first shows, or when almost completely open, depending on your market and preferred use. Dried - Flowers are completely open. Hang or use silica gel. Uses: Excellent cut flower or for gardens

One of our favorite natives, Mule's Ears is a robust and resilient wildflower found in seasonally moist areas of the west, specifically east of the Cascades. Similar to sunflowers, their large and abundant, yellow blooms attract a number of bee species in Spring, especially bumble bees. While this species was once more abundant, they can still be a common sight during Spring in some meadows and areas of shrub-steppe. Mule's Ears enjoy more moisture than some other species, like Balsamroot, but because of their large taproot, they are still very drought tolerant. They can also withstand fire, trampling, and grazing, provided it isn't constant. Try growing them in open areas where you notice more moisture in Spring. Try pairing them with Camas, Lomatium, and paintbrush. Just keep in mind they take time to establish and grow their taproot. Each packet contains approximately 100 seeds.
