Earlier this month I blogged about Morgan's rainbow themed birthday party. And I promised I'd share the rainbow slush soon. Guess what? I'm finally ready to share! It's really easy and inexpensive, and the kids loved it. So here goes. You will need: Ice Pops, a trifle bowl, scissors, a fork & a small bowl. I got my ice pops at Walmart for $2.48 (they are $1.50 now at my store!). Seperate by color. In these packages there are some colors with two shades, like green and yellow, and then pink and red. I mixed the similar colors together. Cut open your tubes and empty into your bowl. Next you will take your fork and smash them up so there are no big chunks. You want to try & get it as soft as possible so it spreads evenly. Empty the contents of the bowl into your trifle bowl. (notice my little helper sitting on the table?) Use your fork to smooth it down evenly. Then you will just repeat with each color. Make sure you put the trifle bowl in the freezer between layers so the colors don't mix. You can see that my blue kind of disappeared into the purple because I waited too long to put it in the freezer. And there you have it! I told you it was easy! I took it out of the freezer a little before I was ready to serve it, so it could soften up just enough to be scooped out. It was a big hit so I will definitely be making this again. Oh, and make sure that when you are done with it, if it's been sitting in the freezer for awhile (like I don't know, a week?) so LET IT THAW before trying to clean it. I tried to hurry things along with hot water, and needless to say, the trifle bowl didn't make it. Oops! I was in Florida a couple of months ago, and now that I posted everything I could about my Europe vacation, I can start sharing some things that I did while in the Sunshine State. Before you ask, no I did not encounter Florida Man while I was down there though I did notice some weird things going on because it is Florida. I spent one of those days in Key West, which is probably the southernmost city in the continental United States. I should be more accurate in saying that I spent most of the day traveling to and from Key West from my lodgings in Fort Lauderdale. I think the travel time for me was around 4 hours one way which was brutal, but most of the drive through the keys was scenic. I felt like I was driving on these endless bridges that seemingly go nowhere with nothing around you but the sea. Probably the most well-known monument in Key West is the 'Southernmost Point' monument at the south end of Key West. There was a lineup of people wanting to take pictures of the monument but I just wanted to take a picture of the monument itself just to say that I have been there. I went to this food cart to get some shrimp tacos, but also to sample the local delicacy famous to Key West, which is the Key Lime Pie. It tasted like this mix of sour (coming from the limes) and sweet (probably coming the sweeteners such as condensed milk). Key West had the overall vibe of a small tourist town. It was not particularly busy, probably because I arrived on a weekday, though I did see some police officers try to wrangle a drunk tourist. With Key West being a small tourist town, everything from drinks to souvenirs were prohibitively expensive, so as a small souvenir, I picked up a small Key West bell in the shape of that monument I showed you. There is a square alongside the water that you can check out. I look out toward the water and there is a small island with housing on it. I assume this is where some rich people stay. The rest of my time in Key West was just walking around and checking out different attractions. I am glad I got to go see Key West for at least the day but doing the drive going to and back in one day is rough on your body. Even looking for a hotel is quite expensive considering the islands that Key West and the other towns are on are not particularly big. More pictures/videos below:
I had a blast preparing for Nora's You Are My Sunshine 1st birthday party. I wanted to create a vintage feeling so I incorporated several vintage fabrics in yellow and orange, old crates, and embroidery hoops. Here are some of the decoration details. Candace Lynn Photography Food Table It was a humid day (in fact it rained all day until about 1 hour before the party) so we didn't put the cupcakes out until it was time to eat. The menu also featured an ice cream bar with lots of topping choices. A shot with all the food A wide shot of the set-up: food table, high chair, and lemonade stand The guest tables were draped in a vintage sheet to act as a tablecloth. The centerpieces were a yellow round woven placemat with a mason jar filled with lemons and daisies. Scalloped fabric garland made with coordinating yellow and orange fabrics. It is a mix of modern and vintage prints. I love the soft edges. Hope I can find someplace else to use it. The ever present DIY cupcake stand made from white candlestick holders and plates. The cupcakes were vanilla and lemon. Free cupcake topper printables from Kiki Creates. Nora's special treat And what's a sunshine party without a lemonade stand? To create the lemonade stand I draped a vintage tablecloth over a small kids table to hold the drinks then stacked crates for the drink accessories Candace Lynn Photography To identify the drinks we used DIY mini chalkboard signs. We had several kid friendly games set up such as Beach Balls and Balloons, Bean Bag Toss, and a Wild Wheels Obstacle Course A small scallop garland to pretty up the birthday girl's high chair The party was held outside but I couldn't resist doing a little decorating inside too. The mantel outfitted with a doily garland (tutorial from Lemon Tree Creations vie Apartment Therapy), embroidery hoops filled with coordinating fabric, paper fans, and a You Are My Sunshine print from The Wheatfield (this picture and the "E" were actually taken off of Nora's wall in her room) In the bay window we put up a picture of Nora from each of her 12 months. We bought dollar store frames (actually still had them from Sawyer's 1st bday party) and spray painted them yellow. Each of Nora's friends received a party favor: peach rings (reminded me of a sun) in baby food jars and a pair of sunglasses with a tag that said "Thanks for brightening my day!" The invitations: created by Katiedid Designs then I stitched them onto vintage fabric It was a fun little party for our ray of sunshine! I find it ironic I did a snowflake 1st birthday for Sawyer and a sunshine 1st birthday for Nora. What's with the weather themes.
