Last week was an incredibly fun week of VBS - Vacation Bible School. Each morning these 2 super heroes greeted the children. I taught the 2-year-olds and about half the class was afraid of these masked characters so they stayed back in the nursery for the opening. Each morning we also watched a very professionally done movie by some great actors from our church. It was about two boys who kept getting into trouble and 3 superheroes who helped them get out of trouble by finding The Superhero! We had a great worship time. The children were so excited and quite vocal about praising our Lord! Some of the 2's really got into dancing to the music! Two's can be quite wiggly! The older children did rotations (like missions, crafts, music, snack, games...) They learned about a great project to raise money to get some proclaimers (audio solar Bibles) for an unreached people group in Africa. The kids LOVED this and we raised enough money ($2,200!) for over 20 proclaimers! Below are a couple of the missionaries that will be going in August to tell the people there about Christ! They are going to a country where my Aunt Treva served for over 30 years! (thanks, Tami, for this picture!) When I was in Africa in 1992, I got to go to a hut with my missionary friend and see her use one of these and watch the African lady listening so intently to God's Word in her own language. Most of these people don't read so this is a marvelous tool to hear about God! I had up to 12 two-year-olds and we had a blast!! These were children of workers only. They are so adorable! I didn't get photos of everyone because not everyone came every day and I only brought my camera one day. My bad. Bill and Jill would sing "Won't you come and SIT with me.... won't you come and SING with me...here at VBS" "Oh I love to pat my Bible, my Bible, my Bible, Oh I love to pat my Bible, it's God's Holy Word." "Oh, I love to read my Bible, my Bible, my Bible, Oh I love to ready my Bible, it's God's Holy Word!" And what do we read in our Bibles? We read and learn that God sent us the Rescuer, Jesus! And that He loves each boy and girl! I loved these great helpers!! They are so good with little 2- year-olds! Here they are marching around the room with the children! These are my special super heroes (my granddaughters) who really enjoyed their classes too! There were 10 children who accepted Christ into their lives this year. And that makes all the work very worth it!!!!

Spider-Girls Digital commission for one of my regular clients. Tried some different tools in PS on this one.
My son celebrated his 7th birthday last month, but because of our trip to Disney, we just had his birthday party this weekend. He really loves Science, so he requested a Science party this year. This was also the first year he had a party with just friends from school, so he was extra excited. I was lucky enough to find this free printable science invitation over at Living Locurto - thanks Amy! After mailing the invitations I started work right away on the cake, decorations, and party details. For the cake, I ended up doing a two tier cake, covered in fondant and with lots of science details. The colors were vibrant and the details turned out well. Best of all, my son loved it! For the decorations, we used a lot of my son's science things. We filled some flasks with radioactive rods (aka glow sticks) and candy to match our cake colors (green, orange and blue). We also filled his plastic test tubes with candy Nerds - they looked like some mysterious potions bubbling up. We added his shark in a jar, shark teeth, and some of his favorite rocks from his rock collection to our display as well. And, we made this banner reading, "Kaden's Lab," with paper plates linked together with pipe cleaners. Each kid scientist who attended would receive their own clipboard with investigation sheets, a pair of goggles and a scientist badge. I purchased the mini clipboards from Target for $1 each in the Dollar Bins and the plastic badge covers (10 pack) at the Dollar Store for $1. As the kid scientists arrived, they used the hand scan to obtain access to the laboratory. I saw this idea over at The Celebration Shoppe's blog. We started our science party with a free exploration using magnets. I filled a large container with some sand from our sand box and filled it with different metal items. The kid scientists used magnets to find the hidden items and drew pictures of them on their investigation sheets. Our second investigation was called Drops on a Penny. The kid scientists made predictions about how many drops of water would fit on a penny, nickel, dime and quarter, then used pipettes to test their predictions and record their results on their investigation sheets. Sink and Float was our third investigation. Each kid scientist had a turn to pass an object around the table, then test it in the water to see if it would sink or float. They recorded their predictions and results on their investigation sheets. Our fourth investigation was Color Lab. The kid scientists practiced mixing colors on their investigation sheets using colored water and pipettes. \ The fifth investigation was creating constellations, using dark colored paper and star stickers. We talked about what a constellation was and the kid scientists used their star stickers to create their own picture in the sky and used a piece of chalk to connect-the-stars to show their design. I didn't catch a picture of this one. The Milk Lab was our last investigation. In a shallow dish, I poured some whole milk, then put drops of food coloring in a circle in the center of the dish. I dipped a toothpick in some dish soap (we used Dawn) and placed it in the milk in the center of that circle of food coloring. The reaction is really cool! I purposely did not take a picture of the reaction, so you could be just as surprised when you try it yourself. The kid scientists drew pictures on their investigation sheet to show what happened. We had some basic snacks, drinks and food for the party. We covered these mini water bottles with H2O labels that my husband made up. We also had rainbow spectrum fruit strips (aka fruit roll ups), marshmallow molecules, cheddar explosion goldfish, and pretzel pinwheel atoms. And of course there was every scientist's favorite fuel food - pizza! All in all, I think the party turned out great! The kid scientists seemed to have a lot of fun; even my son's teacher said that some of the kids wrote about the party in their journals Monday morning. As a former teacher, I had fun too, getting back into teacher mode for a bit. Many of our other Science items were purchased from American Science and Surplus. If you haven't checked them out, you must! I don't believe I can share a link for my documents, but if you are interested in having a copy of any of the science investigation sheets or the kid scientist badges, just shoot me an email at [email protected] and I will email you the files. I loved working with the insulated styrofoam. The greatest discovery for me was the ability to use them for lightweight signs! I am in love with the medium for that purpose. Wood is so heavy and bulky. The styrofoam was easy to move around my kitchen and dining room, where I did almost all the painting. LOVE! Loved so much that after I finished the stage I decided we needed a sign that we could put outside, leading into VBS. But this post is really about how the signs helped the stage backdrop, so allow my to focus on that. Once the panels were up and painted they were striking. The set was the tallest we've probably had in the Worship Center. But they really popped when we added the windows and the action words. For the windows all we did was take quarter sheets of construction paper in yellow and two shades of blue. At first we tried to adhere them with masking tape. That didn't work. So Eric broke out the can of spray adhesive. That worked beautiful. Since they only needed to be up for two weeks we didn't do the permanent bond (where you spray both surfaces and allow it to dry). Two weeks in and they are still well attached. The second thing we did was add some color with the daily action words. Let me walk you through that process. I did my design in Illustrator (my program of choice). I converted the file to a jpg. Using a portable projector (our church has one) we projected the image onto the styrofoam sheet. I used a yellow highlighter to mark where I needed to paint. Then I started with the words in the center and worked out, building color as I went. The black really made the whole thing pop. The only color that was a little tricky to cover over the highlighter was the light blue paint. It was a cheaper brand paint, so it was probably a bit more watery. Again acrylic craft paint is what you want to use. You can buy small bottles of it at any hobby story (Michaels is where I usually buy it). Then came the cutting out with the styrofoam cutter that I mentioned in Part 1. Tedious, but precision is possible with this tool! This is how they looked all stacked up. So pretty. (Yep, that's the geeky graphic artist in me.) And here is the sanctuary. The lighting is really poor. So there are a few close-ups that follow. Stage right. Stage right. I'll post about the telephone booth in another post about the VBS decorations. It turned out awesome and I cannot take credit for it at all! We are blessed with some extremely talented people at our church. And that's a wrap on the stage. It was work, but it was really a lot of fun and so rewarding. Next time would take a lot less effort and we would probably start earlier and I would pace myself better on the painting. So happy with how it turned out! cami If you missed the other two posts... Every year Journey does an event called VBX. Essentially we have a next level vacation bible school. This year the theme was Superheros. So for our scenic and lighting design we tried to turn our auditorium into a super hero training facility. One of our craziest challenges was that the event started Tuesday am with Monday am rehearsals. With the scale of this set / decor you will see the challenge in getting it set mostly overnight. In our lobby, we covered all of our lower windows with a cityscape. We made this out of black coroplast. We traced it with white paint pens over a projected image. Also to build some excitement as you enter the room, we built a unreasonably large entry way. I think we got pretty close to our desired goal. (above) We built scenic panels from 7/16 osb and 2"x4"s. I drew up the truss structure in Vectorworks (CAD). It is based of a truss structure we did for DDD at Northland. We rented all the truss for the entry way (and our extra lights from Integrity Lighting in Tulsa). In the void created in CAD I laid out our entry way panels. I drew in 4' x 8' breaks, and we ran with it. As stated we made 4' x 8' flats from OSB and 2x4 frames. We found that painting the OSB helped diminish the texture of the OSB some, however it still looked a bit rough close up. In retrospect we should have used a flat type surface like masonite or Plywood. We almost completely built this part of the set before the event and just assembled onsite. Did I mention it took a whole lot of grey 2 x 4s? We painted the OSB a flat grey. We laid out the center sections and painted stripes horizontally down them with some gloss grey and a dark copper color (should have used different colors... you have to make mistakes to learn). For the JK logo we projected the image onto the flat and traced it with sharpies. Then it was easy as color by numbers. Note: Tonya did 90% of this painting, because she is AWESOME and so much more steady handed than me. She made it look like a printed graphic... I am still pretty impressed by it. It is in our warehouse still as a matter of fact! We used the flats to build the "walls" from the bottom up, We attached them to each other with 3" screws. Once the entire wall section was built, we attached eyehooks to it and hung (more like braced) it with safeties. We also attached the structure to the truss with some 2x4s and braced it in the back. We cut 2" black coroplast strips to face the edges of the scenic panels. It worked well and gave us a really clean look (Good call Marty!). We also bought a bunch of things to accent the entry way. We used painted gutter splashes, conduit, hazard signs, and painted logos. My favorite part though was the bio hazard tubes. We cut 6" PVC pipe and caps in half and painted them bright green. Then with a stencil painted on the yellow Biohazard sign. We used a bit of glue to attach them. Fun Fact: The set actually said "Superhero Training Facility" at the beginning, however I spelled it wrong...... lets just say we had to make a last minute improvement. =) Inside the auditorium we did a lot to make the room look like a Super hero training base too. Our concept was to make the stage look like the command center and the seating area to look like the training grounds. One of our simplest, easiest to build, most effective, and most reusable set pieces was what I like to call the "Cheese Grater" panels. They are 3'6" wide x 8' tall 2x4 frames with a piece of steel lath attached to the back. Construction of these was very simple. We cut 45 deg. angles on the boards and used 3" screws to fasten them together. Then we attached the steel lath to the 2"x4"s with a hammer stapler. We spent more time painting than anything else. Simple but they lit up very well and we have them to use as a stand alone piece in the future.. We used them on the wings and horizontally from the truss uprights Unfortunately I don't have a bunch of pictures form the set. Hopefully I will be able to dig some up in the future to add here. To add some vertical dimension we put up some 20' truss towers. They also acted as supports for the horizontal Steel lath and a few police beacons as eye candy. To make them look more futuristic and pretty-like we uplit them with LEDs We also attached a few 90 deg. sections of circle truss that we own to the uprights. They jutted onto the stage and gave a nice dimension (I thought it wouldn't work, but Marty was right. They worked awesome.) We also hung yellow steel grates in the ceiling, as you can see in the picture below. They were red steel panels from a basketball cage at one point. That is, until we painted them on the lawn. The lawn did not fare so well... Another one of the cool elements we used were 8- 55 gallon drums. We got them donated and painted them yellow and black. With spray adhesive we glued on some Bio hazard, and explosive decals. (one of my favorite elements) We also built a center piece for the stage. It was made to be the control center for our Superhero training facility. We built an angled console out of 2"x4"s that held 2 large LCDs on an angle. We also placed 2 LCDs behind the control center on stands. We ran content for them from an old IMAC and apple TV setup. We faced the 2"x4" frame with masonite that we painted grey. We then sprinkled on a few extra touches. We added a line of I cove LEDs at the bottom of the TVs to give some futuristic flair. We also added some vents near the bottom to breakup the big span of Masonite. Another cool touch was the tape we used for trim. It was a reflective metal tape. Think smooth mirror ball tape. It looked fancy. To round it out, we lit these items with some spare American DJ leds we have. We also did a bit in some of the breakout rooms and the lobby. There was a newspaper rack from the Oklahoman in the lobby that had headlines of what the kids had learned that day. We also setup a newspaper office in The Studio. It is supposed to look like the Daily Planet and that character is Louise Lane. All the newspapers were donated by the Oklahoman too (they were nice enough to even deliver them). The desks we got donated from a bank. We tried to print windows to make the stage look more like an office (not sure if it was a success or not). To round out the set in the main room we added 12 Mac 101s, 4 Mac 700s, 6 Martin Atomic 3000 strobes, and a Glaciator. It worked amazing and gave us some flexibility with lighting in the seating that we normally didn't have. Plus honestly strobes and low fog are cool (as long as they are used in the right context) Above you can see the patent pending Oklahoma style sand bags =) Dorian even helped me with this one =). During one song I let him run the Color Pro setup for the control panel LEDs.

I LOVE to decorate for VBS! Sadly, I don't usually do anything small. I think because I got saved at VBS as a child. At that time my family didn't go to church. A family friend had invited me to go. I still have fond memories of what the church looked like decorated, the crafts we did and the guest speaker who was an x-hobo and what he spoke about the night I gave my life to Jesus. All of my heart goes into the prep for VBS and prayer that Jesus will change a child's life forever during that week! I really enjoy looking at other people's ideas and get a glimpse into their creative process so I thought maybe there is someone else there who enjoys that too so I'm going to share. I used foam insulation board to create our city scape. I started out w/ a VERY rough idea and used a hot knife to cut the board then began painting. Once the outline was done I added some dimension with a different color in the middle and then cut a rectangle out of a sponge and painted "the lights" in each building. My husband helped me put all the different pieces of insulation board together using skewers. There are three different sizes cut from the boards to create each row of the skyline. The taxi cab is made from a yellow tri-fold project board we found at Hobby Lobby. I cut the taxi out using the edge to make the tires flat so it could stand on it's own. Then I added the taxi sign by using two pieces of paper and sandwiching toothpicks in between then sticking it inside the top.
