Original Vintage Advertisement Title: Biggest line-up of sewing helps in town! Year: 1943 Company: Singer Product: Sewing Center Artwork: B&W Photo Caption: n/a Size: Approx. 10.5" x 13.5" (26 cm x 34 cm) Vintage advertisements are masterpieces of professional persuasion. Madison Avenue employed the finest illustrators, graphic artists, photographers, copy writers and celebrities of their day. They are ephemeral reminders of the products of days past – some that are still marketed today, others that are curious historical artifacts, and still others that are quite humorous. Vintage ads can be framed for your own home. Given as gifts, they can make a truly personal connection to a hometown, career, hobby, pet, car, etc. Original vintage ads also put that finishing touch to any collection. Item: This is an original vintage ad. It is not a photocopy and it is not the original artwork of the ad agency. I am not selling the cameras, cars or the countries pictured on them. The sources may be from popular magazines, trade magazines, pamphlets, playbills, newspapers, etc. I have an extensive stock of items listed and unlisted. Your vintage ad, of course, does not have the watermark "VintageAdarama". Measurement: Measurements are made from paper edge to edge. Trimming: Trimming is minimal (if at all) in order to provide ample margins for matting and/or framing. Therefore, rough edges and staple-holes may be present as the image is scanned to look like it will when matted and/or framed. Condition: This is an original vintage ad. It was printed at least 20 - 90 years ago. Small corner folds, foxing ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxing ), small edge tears, eyebrow creases and other minor wear may be present for ephemera of this age. In addition, if you need a higher resolution scan, I can easily provide this to you. Shipping and Handling: Your vintage ad is shipped in a protective plastic sleeve within a mailing tube that fits into most standard-sized mailboxes to prevent folding. Additional vintage ads with same package shipped for no additional postage. Provenance Document: Original date of publication and source documented. By Koala incorporating this advanced design feature into their furniture, the wood core must be made from a dense, high-grade, 3/4 inch fiberboard with no imperfections. Large Work Surface When you’re needing a large flat surface to work on, access the filler board from the storage area in the cabinet. Then lower your machine down completely to store it inside the cabinet, so you can make use of the entire work surface. Exclusive Ergonomic Design When talking about the science of ergonomics, primary drivers dictate how a person's body will perform in a task. We’ve learned that in sewing, it begins with your line of sight and starts a chain reaction through your body. Koala’s exclusive ergonomic design begins with a studio height of 32 ½”. This height creates a perfect starting point that can accommodate any individual. Your Koala studio comes with an adjustable base that can be set in any 1 of 5 different positions to create the perfect placement for your hips, knees, and feet. This allows you to be positioned ergonomically from head to toe, so you can comfortably sew or quilt for hours on end. Custom Machine Insert Every Koala studio sewing cabinet is built specifically for you! When placing your order, we need the brand and model number of your specific machine. This allows us to order your custom machine acrylic insert. The insert creates a smooth surface around your machine, so your sewing work area is completely flat and level between the cabinet and your machine. “If they love clothes and you love to save,“ is the theme of this 1951 original vintage advertisement for Singer Sewing Machines and Singer Sewing Centers. The ad features a couple of girls in matching vintage outfits and information about Singer Sewing Centers on their 100th Anniversary in 1951. A BONUS is another ad on the opposite side the same page for Nuyens Cordials and Flavored Brandies. The ad features several different offerings in nice photos. Please see the scans. The ads are 10x14 and in very good condition with some page aging and small edge tears, marks. REMEMBER: these are NOT 2 separate items but the front and back of a SINGLE page. They are both being listed because of possible multiple interests or topics. Vintage advertisements and articles are becoming more and more collectible for their nostalgia look and unique eye-appeal. They also are suitable for framing and are becoming more scarce as the supply of vintage paper products continues to decrease. Please note this is an original, vintage product advertisement and NOT a reproduction.
Understand all of the parts of a sewing machine, including how to use them.
This is our last week of the Sew Organized series, and for this final installment I'm sharing ideas for organizing and storing projects - all of those UFOs and WIPs (Unfinished Objects and Works In Progress). The hope is that if we can keep them organized, then we'll be more likely to finish them, right? If you missed Sew Organized parts 1-3 you can find them here: Sew Organized Part 1: Tips for Storing Quilting Tools and Rulers Sew Organized Part 2: Tips for Storing Patterns, Magazines and Books Sew Organized Part 3: Storing and Organizing Fabric and Scraps First, I want to talk about ways to just keep track of what projects are currently being worked on. There are a few great types of planners out there that are built just for quilters and crafters (Quilters Planner and Patchwork Planner to name two.) But if you're not wanting a full calendar & planner system for your projects there are also several printables available that help you list and track your projects. One of my favorites is this Quilting Organizer Pack from Maker Valley and I also like these Quilt Project Planner free downloads from Hello Melly Designs. I've been using the Quilting Organizer Pack from Maker Valley and I keep it on a clipboard that hangs on the bar with my rulers. You can see it on the right in the photo below. It's handy to grab and so it's more likely that I'll keep it updated and refer to it often. It's great because it helps me keep track of what stage each of my WIPs is in. I can see which projects need sashing or borders - and which ones are waiting for backing to be pieced, or binding added. And when I finish something, it's SO satisfying to be able to cross off a completed project! Alright. Now that we're keeping track of the projects, we need places to store all of them! When considering how to store projects, keep a few things in mind. First of all, if the project will be taking you months to complete, find a more permanent solution for storage. If you'll be moving the project to go to a retreat, or just from room to room (such as a hand piecing or EPP project) then find a portable storage solution. One of my favorite storage tools are these ArtBin Super Satchels. They're about 14" x 14" - perfect size for storing 12.5" quilt blocks. They have sturdy latches that stay closed even when the bin is stuffed full, and there's a handle which is so nice! They stack beautifully, but they can also stand on end. I keep these three on the bottom row of my closet - out of the way, but easy to grab when I need to. You can find them here on Amazon. I've also heard that they're at Walmart but I haven't checked myself to be sure. I also love using these stackable wire baskets from the Container Store. And I do mean love. Really love. If I had space, I'd get more of them. They come in multiple sizes, have handles for carrying, and I can easily see what's inside. When stacking, the handles flip to the inside so the weight of the next basket rests on the handles and not on the contents of the basket. The baskets stack perfectly on these shelves in my cutting table, but in the past I've also just kept a few stacked next to my sewing machine for easy access. I mostly use these baskets for projects that will last over a long time - like the Patchwork Quilt Along from last year. I could keep adding my blocks to the basket each month but not have to handle them much. In a taller version of the same baskets I'm keeping all of the fat quarters I need for this english paper pieced project that I've been working on. I can take the basket with me to the tv and pull from it as I work and watch movies, and then tote it back to my sewing room for storage when I don't need it. I also have a few drawers available and I keep projects in there as well. I try not to though, because --interestingly enough -- the ones that go in the drawers don't get worked on as much! You know, the whole out of sight out of mind thing. Here are some other ideas that I think are pretty clever! These vinyl project bags designed by Amanda Jean Nyberg (Crazy Mom Quilts) can be made in pretty much any size you'd need! They have a zipper closure and would keep project supplies and quilt blocks dust free and organized. A friend of mine made some of these with handles on the top and she hangs them in her closet - freeing up much needed shelf space. You can find the pattern for these here in Amanda's Craftsy shop. edited to add: The pattern for these vinyl project bags has been removed from Craftsy (now called Bluprint). The pattern is available for purchase here or wholesale from Checker distributors - ask your local shop to order some! I also like this wire drawer storage idea from All People Quilt -- easy to see what's inside but still keeps everything organized and tidy looking when the drawers are closed. You can find similar ones here on Amazon. This idea (also from All People Quilt) is clever: A baker's rack with each sheet tray being used for a WIP. You can easily slide out the tray and carry it to wherever you need to work and then return it to the rack for storage. And there's wheels on the cart too! And one more.... How about these plastic drawers? I found these on Pinterest and the photo doesn't connect to a website or blog, but these Sterilite drawer organizers from Amazon look similar and they're wide and deep enough to hold 12.5" quilt blocks! How to do you track and store your WIPs? Have any great tips to share? I'd love to hear them! Need even more WIP storage ideas? Check out my Sewing Room Organization pinterest board and be sure to follow me because I'll keep adding great ideas to the board as I find them! And if you missed Sew Organized parts 1-3 you can find them here: Sew Organized Part 1: Tips for Storing Quilting Tools and Rulers Sew Organized Part 2: Tips for Storing Patterns, Magazines and Books Sew Organized Part 3: Storing and Organizing Fabric and Scraps Happy quilting (and organizing) everyone! --Andy **This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission (at no additional cost to you) when purchases are made through links found in this post.

Let us first start by defining what a sewing machine is before looking into its different parts and their functions.
Well, here it is. This is where I spend my days, The Sugar Shop. I picked up the bookshelf at a local antique store for $150. It was poorly white-washed, with gobs of butter-yellow paint slathered on the details. Isaac...
Claire Shaeffer explains how to have your tailored jackets hold their shape for decades by creating interfacing inspired by French designer Yves Saint Laurent.
Description The uniqueness of Sylvia’s modular design allows for this wrap-around sewing cabinet that accommodates two of the new, larger sewing, quilting, and embroidery machines. The expanse of the workspace and storage area puts what you need conveniently within reach. Truly a dream come true. This sewing cabinet also features commercial-grade locking casters that make it easy to move the cabinet around your sewing studio, even on carpet. Glue and dowel construction for tight, strong joints. The hinges are flush with the top surface to keep your fabrics or quilts from snagging. When you sew you are centered right in front of the needle, keeping you in a comfortable position. Complete with durable stain, scratch, and heat resistant melamine finish ~ and you choose your color! As you take a look at this U2810 you can see what the 810 looks like closed and the 1570 optional extension where we have it listed separately. Options Options expand with Sylvia Design with their unique way of making separate units that fasten together. You can choose to upgrade and have a sewing cabinet above and beyond your expectations. An option is to add one of the 1570 Extensions to the front of the 810 unit. This gives you room to support those large projects and have an extra work surface. It measures Width: 35 1/4″ Depth: 19 7/8″ Height: 29 3/4″ The 817 Drop leaf in the back of the 810 also allows for better support to your projects. Also, see the Sylvia Design U2610. Please note that the U2610 has smaller sewing machine holes. Another option for the U2810 is to put the 810Q on the left side to replace the 810. If you take a look at the 810Q by itself, you will see that it allows better support for those large projects. The Q stands for Quilting. On the right side of the Sylvia Design U2810 you can choose to have a serger opening or the second sewing machine. The standard serger hole size is 17 1/2" x 13 7/8. If you have a larger serger such as the Baby Lock Triumph or Ovation you will need the larger serger hole size of 20" x 14". This uses up all the space and a drop-leaf can not be attached to the back of the 810. You are Responsible to check the Sewing Machine Hole Size Be sure to measure your sewing machine with all attachments removed. For the best fit, allow 2 extra inches around your machine for the insert to fit well. The extra 2" also allows room for your machine to raise and lower freely with the lift and the sewing machine cords. The standard sewing machine opening size can be found in the specifications. Acrylic Insert Inserts are designed to fit your specific make and model of sewing machine and cabinet and fill gaps around your sewing area*, allowing you to work more efficiently and comfortably. They are made with one of the highest grades of acrylic. All the inserts are designed based on having the accessory tray removed from the machine. The insert is designed to be perfectly level with the free arm of the machine. If you have a top-loading bobbin this may affect your use. Occasionally those that are custom cutting the insert will have additional questions about your sewing machine, or the hole that they are fitting, and you will be asked more questions. Lift The U2810 comes with 2 lifts! The Merz heavy-duty lift is made in Germany and has three positions for your sewing machine, holding up to 60 pounds. Positioned all the way down, you can close up the sewing machine cabinet completely. In the middle position, the arm of your sewing machine is flush with the top of your cabinet for sewing and quilting. This position is meant to be used with an optional sewing machine insert that fits around the arm of your machine. All the way up, the third position allows you to take advantage of your sewing machine free arm and use your embroidery unit. With three positions you can sew ergonomically and be comfortable as you sew. The lift allows 21.65" of height for your sewing machine and holds up to 60 pounds. Finishing Touches Sylvia Design finishes are made of hardwood melamine which is durable, heat, scuff, scratch, and stain-resistant. The tops and bottoms of the sewing cabinets are 3/4" thick and the upright pieces are 5/8" thick. Choose from any of the six beautifully rich colors that Sylvia has to offer: Castle Oak, Sunset Cherry, Twilight Linea, Brown Pearwood, White, and White with Oak trim. Every Sylvia cabinet is completely finished front to back, inside and out. The cabinet comes mostly assembled. All you do is attach the commercial-grade locking casters and the different units. The cabinet even comes with a lifetime warranty. Sylvia Design is currently taking approximately 14 weeks to get their orders ready to ship. Delivery with a trucking company. The cabinet is secured on a pallet in one box. You will need to be home to receive your cabinet and sign for it. The Multi Combo Cabinet Model U2810 requires some assembly. Options 6 Color Choices Acrylic Insert ~ We really encourage this for your sewing cabinet! 1570 Extension for the left side of the 810, Width: 35 1/4″ Depth: 19 7/8″ Height: 29 3/4″ Drop leaves on the back of the 810 Upgrade to an 810Q on the left side Choose to have a serger on the right side. Specifications Open Sides A & C: 92″W x 19 7/8″D x 29 3/4″H Side B: 80 1/2″W x 19 7/8″D x 29 3/4″H Closed Width: 60″ Depth: 19 7/8″ Height: 30 1/2″ Sewing Machine Hole Size 26" x 12.5" Both are the same size
During the Dots on Dots Blog Hop, I promised to put together a tutorial to show you how I fussy cut fabrics for paper-piecing. When I first began paper-piecing I struggled with centering a motif in a particular section because of the way seam allowances are trimmed before pieces are sewn together. Without a lot of shifting, which often left another area uncovered, I just couldn't place my fabrics exactly where I wanted them. My results were often haphazard. However, once I learned this trick, I can now put any motif exactly where I want it on any paper-pieced design! So on my Design Wall today is this little teapot block. I’ll show you how I planned my fabric placement so that the flowers are centered perfectly in their section of the block. Find this cute Teapot pattern here - http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/quilting/other/tea-pot-paper-pieced-block/17870 Please note that this tutorial will assume that you already know how to paper piece. If you are new to paper-piecing, there are many tutorials available on the web to help you learn. In addition to my normal paper piecing supplies, fabrics and pattern, I also used a light box. Section 5 is the area that I want to fussy cut. First I turned the paper pattern over. On the back I marked the line between Sections 1 and 5 where I would be sewing, as well as the left & right side lines, with a pencil so I could see it clearly - see picture below.... Then I laid my pattern piece right side up on the light box and positioned the fabric, also right side up, on top of the pattern, placing it the way I want it to look in the finished block. Can you see how the lines of the pattern show through the fabric so I can audition placement of the motif I am fussy cutting? Place a small amount of fabric glue on the paper and stick the fabric to it in the desired placement position. My fabric glue stick goes on blue and disappears as it dries. This is only a temporary process to hold the fabric in place while you prepare it. You will unstick it soon, so do not use a lot of glue, just enough to hold it in place without shifting. Using a pair of scissors, I trimmed the fabric generously around the lines of the section - DO NOT TRIM THE PAPER, JUST THE FABRIC. Since the fabric is glued down it will not shift while you do this. Also note that this is not the time to get frugal with fabric! Make sure you have plenty of fabric around the edges of the section. Next I placed everything on my cutting board, fabric side down, and using my straight edge, folded the paper back on the sewing line. Then I used my 1/4" ruler & rotary cutter to trim the 1/4" seam allowance for the fabric. This is where you veer away from normal paper piece technique for a minute. The fabric is still wrong side to the right side of the pattern. But do not be concerned; it will go back to the normal positioning of right sides together before you sew :*) My fabric now has only the 1/4" seam allowance remaining over the line where I will be sewing: Next I lifted the fabric up and made small pencil marks on the back of it at each line, left & right of the sewing line, so I would know where to position it when I turn it right sides together to sew. This is the mark I had on each side on the back of my fabric. Now I was able to gently unstick the fabric from the pattern. I then paper pieced sections 1-4 as I normally would, trimming my 1/4" allowance on Section 1 to which I would sew my fussy-cut Section 5. As I placed my Section 5 fabric right sides together in position to sew it to Section 1, I already knew my motif would be in perfect position top to bottom because I had cut my 1/4" seam allowance while it was glued perfectly in place on the pattern. Now my pencil marks on the back of the fabric will line up with the lines on the pattern, so I can be sure that the motif is centered right to left as well. See how the lines meet in the picture below at the red dots? When I was satisfied that I had the fabric correctly centered left to right, I sewed on my line as I normally would. Now see how neatly the motif fits in the desired section! I have already added the top Section #6 in this picture so you can get the full picture of how nicely the motif is centered. And here is my finished result! A perfectly fussy cut flower motif!!! I hope this tutorial helped you! If you have questions, please feel free to email me and I'll do my best to answer them. Mood is stepping up their game with all of these fantastic exclusive collections and as both a vintage fashion lover and complete nerd, this new comic-inspired line had me drooling. This free dress sewing pattern pairs perfectly with its pop-art vibe, featuring a center back zip and a mod 60's silhouette. While I went with a cute and fun printed stretch sateen, I could easily see this made with a stretch twill or solid ponte for a more sophisticated look.

Today's Learning Center post on not so basic quilting tools. I asked several quilting friends to recommend their favourites and have give-aways for a few of them too.

Quilted Kitties Panel 24" in Gray by Robert Giordano for Henry Glass 44 inches wide 100% Cotton Quilting Fabric HG-1079P-90 Material: 100% cotton quilting fabric Width: 44 Inches I’ve been designing quilting fabric for fifteen years now. Since then, I’ve come to realize that quilters are as passionate about their sewing environments as much, if not more than, other hobbies I’ve come to know. Whether this passion is creative, collective, or physical, the rooms and studios centered around this creative process never cease to amaze me. The inspiration for Quilted Kitties started with seeing these environments and attending Quilt Market. In my forty plus years of designing for product, cats and kittens are perennially best sellers. My thought was to marry the two ideas as I’m sure many quilters get into their projects with a snuggly cat by their side. Or perhaps it's just an afternoon cat nap in fabric strewn about the studio. Multiple yards will be cut in a continuous piece.
Vintage 1970, uncut sewing pattern. Misses' dress. McCall's 2386, size 10, bust 32 1/2. A-line dress has center back zipper. Lower edge of sleeves and dress front and back, at midriff, may be gathered by elastic and an optional gathered waist. Other options include a small collar or crew neck neckline, and sleeveless or long sleeves with gathered sleeve bands. Pattern dated 1970. This pattern has never been used, but the top of the pattern envelope is slightly torn. (See photos above.) The price of the pattern has been discounted for this reason. The instructions and pattern tissue are in pristine condition. All products at Attic Sewing Treasures have been in Granny's attic for many years, and most patterns were stored separately (in a brown, paper bag) from their envelopes. Because of the vintage nature of our products, all items are sold As Is. We do not accept refunds or returns, but if you have a question or problem with your order, please contact us immediately.

**This pattern was originally sold under the title Thread Dispenser/Sewing Case 2.0. ByAnnie.com changed the name to Thread Dispenser/Sewing Case II in Jan. 2021 to promote more consistency in our pattern catalog. There was no substantial change to the pattern itself.** You'll have no more tangled jumbles of thread when you make and use these handy thread cases. Special slots in each pocket enable you to easily thread a needle without removing the spools from their pockets and keep everything neat as a pin. The large case has four see-through pockets which hold up to 48 spools of thread as well as a larger pocket for scissors, needles, and other supplies. The 10" x 30" organizer neatly folds to a compact 8" x 10". Perfect for individual projects, the small case holds up to 12 spools of thread and folds to measure 5" x 5". Directions are given for a standing case as well as a version that folds flat.
I am so impressed by the embroidery on this quilt. Someone put in a printed piece (the one in the center here), entitled "Love's Blessing." It's cool how much creativity they had before TV rotted people's brains, and the time to carry out their vision, too!
