A pinterest project by Auna caught my attention. What a great project for my daughter! I fell in love with the project (i kid you not!). What is there not to love? It's cute, practical and so easy. No sewing machine needed...oh yes!! Okay i take my word back, it wasn't so easy on my part. I don't know anything about measuring a "dress" let alone making this sans my daughter to actually measure. I had to base and follow Auna's measurement thinking that my daughter will fit into her measurements. Oh, i did asked a co-worker of mine to try it on so i will get an idea, where i need to adjust or fix. Went to visit my daughter in Chicago, finally, she tried on my beach wrap and modeled it. The adjustments i had to make were the straps, it was too long on her. She wanted the length (above her knees) shorter as well but other than that.... it fit her to a Tee! ;) I had extra fabric so i made her a headband to match the wrap. Of course i got the idea from pinterest!!! that'll be my next blog! I will be making another one, this time plain black. I bought this fabric on sale, thinking that if i didn't cut them right, i will not waste that much. I love it... really love it! hahaha!!! The back view. Materials you will need: 1 1/2 yards of jersey fabric (45 width). Cut down Auna's suggestion (1.75 yards) since she said she had so much extra fabric. Thread Needle Tape measure Scissors *JERSEY FABRIC IS RECOMMENDED, IT DOESN'T FRAY, NO NEED TO SEW OR HEM THE EDGES. * THE JERSEY FABRIC I BOUGHT WAS ON SALE FOR $4/YARD. I SPENT A TOTAL OF $8 INCLUDING TAX. "Decide the length & width of your fabric. You want it to wrap around your body a bit loosely. I chose to have mine hit just above my knees. You'll also need to make underarm areas. I did that by folding it in half and cutting a deep "C". (*you may need more or less fabric depending on your size- about your waist + hip measurement)" ....AUNA Cut: Underarm area - Fold fabric in half and cut a deep "C" shape. I suggest to measure the underarm area or use a tank top blouse as your guide. Use a tank top as a guide and measure to play safe. This worked for me since she was not around when i made this. Use the extra fabric for your straps. Measure the width and divide into three equal strips. Then braid. THE NEXT THREE PHOTOS ARE FROM ANOTHER BEACH WRAP I MADE. Sew the ends of the strap. Anchor a tip of the "strap" so you can make a good braid. Sew both ends to secure the braids you made. Sew and attach the straps to the C cut (underarm)

One of our SFD customers, Caroline from Santiago Chile, is a perfectionist. And look at the results! Caroline wanted her SFD Dress Kit bodice and skirt fit to be just perfect and 'perfect' she achieved. She'd already sewn a couple of test bodices, and was basically happy with the results. But she sent me this photo asking how to remove the final issue, being the small fold in the lower third of the armscye. (See the orange arrow). Other than this small fold, she'd achieve almost total perfection - wouldn't you agree? My instructions to her were to fold this small amount out of the armhole and let it open up in the side bust dart. But when I received her email I was on a short vacation...and she was heading to a wedding the next day. So she went ahead and sewed her fashion dress without this change. She copied a Dolce & Gabbana designer dress and off to the wedding she went. The D & G designer original. She didn't have time for the custom belt, but it was coming...just after the wedding. Isn't this setting in Santiago beautiful - just perfect for a wedding. But after the wedding, Caroline went ahead with the armhole and bust dart refinement. Even though this next photo is a little fuzzy, you can see that she overlapped the amount of the fold in the armscye and let it open up in the side bust dart. See the orange arrows. This process shortened the front armscye, which means the sleeve cap front needed to be shortened as well so that there wasn't too much to ease into the armscye. Here's a look at her finished bodice pattern pieces. Here's the final 'muslin' - fit to perfection. Then, she hand-crafted the complimentary belt. The result is stunning. Wouldn't you agree it fits her to a 'T'? If you'd prefer to watch a short video on making this pattern refinement, please click on the video below. Here's one last look at this awesome setting. I know she'd love to hear your praise...just leave a comment below...she deserves lots of cudos! Happy Sewing! Glenda...the Good Stitch!

One of the best pieces of advice I have learned is: Measure Twice, Cut Once. I believe and follow that guideline for most of the sewing and other DIY's I create, and it has saved me money and grief. When I can predetermine the finished size of a project, I can calculate how much material I need to buy. Whatever project I plan, I usually buy just a little extra of any materials or ingredients only in case. Before heading out to your favorite fabric store, prepare yourself with some knowledge to spend less, and have more time to sew. With this sewing guide, How Much Fabric Do I Need?, read through my tips for sewing success! On this page, I will go over what you need to know when preparing a new sewing project, explain measurements, and provide downloadable fabric yardage charts to help, including how much fabric you may need for shirts, pants, shorts, dresses, skirts, and more for adults and children. Also, how much fabric do you need for home decor and accessories? Find charts explaining the amount of material required for cushions, ironing board covers, aprons, and more. There's also information on how to do the math and calculate for yourself to determine the fabric needed for any sewing pattern or project you plan to use and create. P.S. Is your shoulder line falling off your shoulders? If so, your neckline and shoulders are too wide and you need to do an Across Chest & Across Back Adjustment to your pattern. In this tutorial I'll show you how you can make your bodice pattern fit better at the shoulder line. Let's get started! Step 1 - First of all work out how much you want to move your your neckline and shoulders in. eg. the above image needs to move over 2.5cm/1". Rule a line at right angles to the CF line. (5cm/2" down from the neckline) Step 2 - Cut the line so that you've go 2 pieces. Step 3 - Now, move the top pattern piece over to amount you've decided. For this tutorial it's 2.5cm/1". Step 4 - Re-draw your armhole and CF lines. Your front pattern has been adjusted now it's time to do the same to the back pattern. Step 5 - Your back bodice pattern will be adjusted the same as the front. Rule a line at right angles to the CB in the across back region (10cm/4" down from the neckline). Step 6 - Cut along the line so you have 2 pieces then move your top pattern piece over the same amount as the front. Step 7 - Redraw your armhole and CB lines. Your back and front pattern adjustments are now done. Don't forget you need to do the exact same adjustment to your facing patterns. Now you have a fantastic fitting bodice. But remember, after each pattern adjustment you need to do another Toile (pronounced Twarl-meaning mock up and sample) just to make sure you've got your bodice fitting just the way you want.
