The Willow Brook Art Studio is a TAB Studio. We have used the Choice-Based and TAB acronym interchangeably, however there are some differences between the two that you may find interesting. Choice provides options. It can be choice in materials, process or even artistic interpretations, however TAB is a pedagogy that was founded by Diane Jacquith and Katherine Douglas. TAB is an acronym that stands for Teaching for Artistic Behaviors where children are taught to think like artists and promote divergent thinking. Art is self directed after a short demonstration. Read more about the differences here on the Art of Ed blog. Are you on the Choice Spectrum or thinking about diving into a life-changing pedagogy that creates strong relationships with your students?

Guitar TAB, tutorial and PDF of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. Fingerstyle guitar song with chords and sheet music.
My students all arrive at different times in the morning, which makes it very difficult to teach a class before their breakfast is served. For the past 2 year I have been having the students write a morning message, since it can be done in their own time as they arrive. It contains the date, the weather, what we plan to do that day and than a note on what we will be doing tomorrow. I am not sure how much my students are really gaining from this, so I have decided to put together morning notebooks for next year. Now that I have started I see that this will be more work than I had anticipated. Each morning should start out with the students logging the weather and temperature than doing a worksheet/activity from the folder. Mondays they will have to log the weekly schedule into the monthly calendar which will be placed in the front of their folders. I hope to have a quarters worth of pages ready at a time. So far I am thinking, Mondays - newspaper skills, Wednesdays -morning warm up, (which I posted a week ago), and Fridays - money math. Now to fill in the other two days! I will be posting things as I create! Here is one on food storage. I tried to pick common grocery items that our kids would have knowledge of. Maybe Tuesdays will be food/health/nutrition? https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B8NVsf6Y1KIvMm9vZTFOdUxlN2c

Generating numerical data for teacher evaluation is on the minds of many art educators. The approach I have described below is doable, however it does NOT take into account outside influences (A serious problem with standardized high stakes tests that policymakers do not want to concede). After successfully completing this assessment model this past year, I am not happy with it's design after taking into account student variables the teacher has no control over. My sincerest thanks to Diane Jaquith and Clark Fralick for input in this matter. The Assessment In all, a total of 20 students were involved in this assessment event. In retrospect, TAB learning experience is used here as a form of behavior modification. I have done constructed response-portfolio assessments with students my entire teaching career. The new Indiana teacher evaluation program, RISE, dictates to teachers they must engage in behavior modification. This is what the state wants. Even if this assessment was successful from the state's point of view, is it morally proper? What about children who regress after baseline events due to environmental influences beyond their control and the teachers control? What does the state have to say about that?

My district is one that is implementing Student Learning Objectives...which are basically large-scale goals for each student in class based on their ability levels. Teachers have to set target scores/learning outcomes for lower level learners to higher level learners. That means there has to be some sort of pre-assessment in order to determine the level of the students. I really have struggled in attempting to create pre-assessments for orchestra. It has been hard to wrap my head around giving a test to see what I know students don't know yet...since I haven't taught the skill, yet. Anyway, I am focusing my learning objective on rhythm. I want to be sure my students are fluent note-readers and rhythm readers. For my pre-test, I will use the 'I Got Rhythm' form that I created. This can be used many different ways and can be a useful tool in a variety of rhythm exercises. For my pre-assessment, I will perform the rhythm from one box on each line...and I will have students circle the rhythm that they think I played. This will help me see if students are already recognizing these rhythms. The rhythms get progressively more difficult as you move down the page, so I will be able to set some learning targets for individual students. Eventually of course, students will demonstrate the ability to perform these rhythms on their own - by the end of year 1. I can also use this form as a rhythm exercise...students can perform the rhythms across and down each line. They can cut them up to make flashcards. You can use the different rhythms for warm-ups and scales.
