This very rare and beautiful botanical engraving is from the "Hortus Indicus Malabaricus" - the Garden of Malabar, published by Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede tot Draakstein in Amsterdam between 1678 and 1693. Rheede was at one time the Colonial Governor of Malabar in Southern India and an avid botanist. There were 12 folios of 791 engravings produced. Each plate has written on it the name of the plant depicted in Latin, Sanskrit, Arabic and Malabarese. I purchased these in Florence 15 years ago from Giovanni Baccani of The Blue Door in the Borgo Ognissanti. They are exquisite and quite rare.

Our India Malabar Monsooned is perfect for those looking for a strong but mellow coffee. Malabar is the name given to the coffee grown in the Kerala region of India situated on the southwestern ‘Malabar’ coast. Coffee from Malabar became famous in the coffee drinking world of Europe and The USA because of its rich very mellow flavour with a subtle hint of spice. Traditionally, Indian coffee was transported by ship, a journey that could take as much as six months. The sea air, monsoon winds, rain and contrasting temperatures brought about dramatic changes to the coffee. In appearance, the coffee beans changed from a bright green to a pale yellow. But what was more significant was the effect on the flavour. The natural acidity was much reduced, replaced instead by a deep smooth and slightly spicy flavour. Today, coffee beans are subjected to a process called “Monsooning” to reproduce the former natural effects of the sea voyage. Coffee is picked and then spread out in specially constructed open sided warehouses. The beans are raked and turned regularly before being loosely packed in sacks and stacked. The open sided buildings allow the monsoon winds to blow through the coffee sacks. The beans are regularly repacked over the course of around 7 weeks until they have changed colour from green to yellow. Once the colour has changed, the beans cupped to ascertain that they have successfully developed the traditional flavours for which they are famous. We roast India Malabar Monsooned dark in order to accentuate its rich and distinctive taste. This creates a smooth cup with gentle acidity laced with notes of burnt sugar, walnut and bitter chocolate.

This is a 17th century engraving of a fever or bonduc nut plant entitled "Ban Caretti" by Hendrik van Rheede tot Drakenstein, plate 20 from his 'Hortus Indicus Malabaricus' (Garden of Malabar), published in Amsterdam in 1686 by Johann van Someren. The engraving depicts the Malabar Ban Caretti plant, which is native to South Asia, originally in the rainy tropical regions of the Malabar Coast of India and Sri Lanka, but it is now grown in backyard gardens around the world. The publication features illustrations of exotic plants and fruits labelled with script in Latin, Malay, Arabic, and Sanskrit. Hortus Indicus Malabaricus is believed to be the earliest comprehensive published work on the flora of Asia and the tropics. The 17th century treatise featured important illustrations of 740 plants of the region, including Indian medicinal plants. The engraving is printed on 17th century laid, chain-linked paper. The sheet measures 15" high by 18.63" wide. There is a central fold, as issued. There are a small number of tiny spots and faint discoloration at the outer edge of the upper and right margins. The print is otherwise in excellent condition. The original Latin descriptive text page is included. less
