Finally, a young man lures her with promises of beautiful furs, food and jewels. After she arrives at his home, he leaves her there and turns back into the Loon bird he had always been. Alone on the desolate cold island Sedna desires to go home. Her father appears one day and sneaks her off the island. A raging storm complicates their journey home. In a desperate attempt to save himself from the huge waves, the father throws Sedna overboard. This creation myth about the origin of sea animals and the ocean is dramatic, exciting and very engaging. It would be a terrific short play for a parent open house or small group performance. It Could Always Be Worse is a comical play which originated as a Jewish folk tale. A farmer is at the end of his rope--his family has overgrown their meager little house and end up quarrelling with one another. The farmer and his wife visit with the Rabbi who tells them some strange remedies to fix the problem, however the couple do as he says. Over time, the house has become even smaller and houses not only the family, but also half of the farm animals! This play has moments for improvisation, great character development and even some non-speaking roles. The Brave Little Tailor is a funny story based on a Grimms' Fairy Tale. The little tailor is one of the luckiest men alive and this play demonstrates that. Full of humorous characters such as the Giant, the King and Queen, students enjoy all of the precarious situations the little Tailor escapes. Plus, there's a song for the Giant and the cast to sing together! This play have many funny characters--some non-speaking and some minor roles which are as much fun as the tailor. Li Chi the Serpent Slayer is a story of the courage of one young Chinese girl. Li Chi volunteers to journey to the mountains to save her village and kill the serpent who demands a young girl be sacrificed to him each year Filled with dramatic moments, Li Chi allows for a large cast, masks and tableaux to be used in certain parts of the story. Additionally, there is a music component which creates an incredible mood. The Little Girl and the Winter Whirlwinds is a tale about a young Bulgarian girl who volunteers to go to the mountains and ask for Father Frost's help with the never ending snow. It is time for spring to arrive and without Father Frost's help, this will never occur. The Little Girl must face the Winter Whirlwinds, their sisters the Blizzards and the Winter Witch who nearly stops her in her tracks. In her most dire moment a group of darling woodland animals save the little girl from the winter cold. With Father Frost's help to capture the Winter Witch, all is not lost for the little girl and spring arrives just in time to save the village. Two songs are included--one a lullaby for the Winter Witch and another for the village to sing at the end of the play. The Cat and the Fox is a delightful Ukrainian folk tale which I've dramatized into a readers theater play. A quick-thinking cat has some imaginative ideas for saving his friend the rooster from becoming the main course for the fox family. Created by an award winning drama teacher of 38 years. A four volume collection of period adventures There are few who have heard of H. Rider Haggard's novels who do not know his principal character-Allan Quatermain-the archetypal white man in Africa. Here was a hero who would take on a Zulu Impi, a charging rhinoceros, a giant gorilla God, a lost tribe, slavers, a magical eternal queen, malign spirits and still come back for more-bringing a host of readers with him. In short, Haggard knew what it took to write a good adventure which is why some of his books have been among the most popular in modern times. Haggard was a prolific author: aside from the Quatermain stories, he produced a sequence of novels concerning the ancient world, four featuring his other great character, Ayesha-'She who must be obeyed'-and a collection of adventure novels taking Africa as their stage but without the presence of Quatermain. All are excellent. In Haggard's lifetime his public eagerly awaited his next book, but today, while many are aware of his reputation, that knowledge often applies to but a small proportion of the reading enjoyment his books have to offer. Fortunately Leonaur now publish most of these works in matching sets at great value by combining two or more novels in each volume. Now Leonaur is pleased to offer Haggard's historical adventure series. Predictably Haggard's inventive pen was able to create several more lead characters of the stamp of Quatermain and they populate many of the ages of history with gripping adventures set against momentous events in many lands. This Leonaur collection offers the reader these fine adventures in historically chronological order. The earliest-and first novel in this volume-is The Brethren. From twelfth century England the reader follows the action to the East. It is the time of Crusaders and the Third Crusade is about to begin. It will only come to a close as Saladin storms and captures Jerusalem. The second tale in this volume is set in the fourteenth century. Edward III sits upon the throne of England. The Black Death stalks all of Europe and war grinds on with the French. This is a great tale that draws its characters to the field of battle that was the momentous conflict of Crecy. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket.
