Smart, scintillating reads are hard to find — especially when you like your protagonists nerdy. Author Lev Grossman offers three great reads for the geeks in all of us.
You know when you see or hear some tough news? You might feel helpless to make a difference. Maybe you live too far away. Maybe you don't have a lot of spare time. Here are three practical ways to help that take just a minute to an hour of your time: 1. Donate blood. We grew up seeing my mom faithfully give blood every 56 days. We also saw her as the recipient of blood transfusions as she went through her breast cancer treatments. It takes about one hour of your time and can truly help those in need. For more information, check out this link. When my mom could no longer donate due to her diagnosis, the five of us sisters donated in her name to get her to her 50th donation. 2. Give of your money. Christie is an amazing writer over at So Here's Us. She is also going through a really rough year as their daughter Becca has leukemia. The money raised on this site is being used to pay for someone to clean their home over the next year so that it's just one less thing to worry about. 3. Check to make sure you are an organ donor here. My uncle and my best friend's brother are the recipients of organ donations. It SAVES lives. Do you have any other advice to offer? Have a great week. Love, Louise

I really did not like my life from the ages of 12-14. There were times that I was bullied and in turn I hurt others. Life is so hard at that age, you really don't need to hear from someone that you are fat or that you should do things you don't want to in order to maintain friendships

“What would you like on your burger?” “Whatever you want me to have” was the reply to my lovely chef of a husband. By the end of each day, I cannot make another decision. I will eat whatever is on that burger and enjoy it because the energy I save from not thinking about it can go towards eating my food.

It took me many years to feel comfortable with my approach to the Canterbury Tales Prologue. It was one of those texts that I appreciated because of the artful humor in the spot-on observations of humanity, but students didn’t seem to connect with it, despite the (misguided) efforts I made with my fellow 12th grade teachers to draw parallels to modern American society. Truthfully though, we dissected the text in ways that were tedious and didn’t do much in the way of building students’ skills for analyzing literature. I was never quite satisfied with my approach until I set time aside to explore what could be the most valuable skills and concepts students could learn from
