Every time I teach The Taming of the Shrew, I struggle with the question – is Shakespeare a feminist? Students ask and we wonder together; then it seems like
The Taming of the Shrew is perhaps one of Shakespeare's most controversial plays by modern standards. Hinging on the courtship between the arrogant Petruchio and the "shrew" of the title Katherina, it is unclear whether Shakespeare's blatantly misogynistic themes were in earnest or tongue in cheek. The charming and tender Bianca is forbidden to marry until her elder sister, Katherine is spoken for. Bianca's suitors enlist Petruchio to woo Katherina for her dowry. Petruchio embarks on his own brand of psychological torture and in so doing manages to "tame" the stubborn Katherine who morphs into the faultless submissive wife. | Author: William Shakespeare | Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform | Publication Date: Mar 21, 2018 | Number of Pages: 64 pages | Language: English | Binding: Paperback | ISBN-10: 1986537536 | ISBN-13: 9781986537537

They can add punctuation. This activity is fun, and also demonstrates to the students the constraints and limitations people lived in during the Renaissance. My students took longer than I thought to construct their poems- more than half an hour. They then took a further 5 minutes to walk around the room ooh-ing and ah-ing at their friends’ work. I was very impressed by the results. My students chopped the words, rearranged them on their desks, and proudly photographed the end result on their phones. You could ask students to glue their words onto paper and put the finished products up on the wall. A simple rubric is included should you wish to mark this activity, or the one pager, or the dice roll story. Supplies You need to photocopy both word pages for each student and provide a pair of scissors for every table. Optional: glue sticks and paper.
