Recently, there have been discussions in the Facebook Tatting Group asking how to join long picots to each other . I remembered I had done this years ago with the bookmark pictured above. I used Ball Thread Joins to attach to picots tip to tip so they wouldn't overlap. Pretty cool, huh? In fact, I did this so long ago, that I thought I had invented the ball thread join, silly me. I thought I had given this pattern to Georgia for the Online Class at the time, but maybe I never got around to it since I can't find it in the old lesson index. I've added the pattern to the Free Pattern Page of this blog, see the link at the top of the page. (Note to self, the new website is way behind schedule, get back to work.) The butterflies are based on a pattern from Butterick's Tatting and Netting from 1896. Free downloads are available from Georgia's Archive of Tatting Books in the Public Domain (scroll down about halfway), and from the Antique Pattern Library's Tatting list (scroll almost to the bottom of the page). I think it was also reprinted by Lacis under a different title, but I can't verify that right now. Update: I originally did not have the pattern file properly set to share publicly, sorry. It should work now.

TATS HEAVEN - Tatting on earth with heavenly connections!
Do you ever have a little tatting voice inside your head? Do you ever have a slump where you don't feel like tatting, or maybe you feel like it, but can't pick anything to make? A while back I was in a slump, and as I would sort through my balls of thread hoping for inspiration for the next project, the little voice would say, "I don't want these, I want to tat with some different colors." Which was odd, because, believe me, I have lots of colors. Eventually, I figured it out, I needed HDT. Or in this case, hand-painted thread as Karey calls hers. I pulled out a skein of her "County Fair" thread and a much admired book from the shelf and was back in business. All of these butterflies are from Tatted Butterflies by Adelheid Dangela. There are quite a lot of good designs in this book. The patterns are all in diagram form, so maybe too hard for a new beginner, but highly recommended for anyone with a little experience, enough to look at the picture and know when to reverse work or switch shuttles.
I just mastered tatting class number three. The class wasn't actually about making a butterfly. The butterfly pattern was used to practice making joined loops. This seems like it should be easy, but it took me a few tries. When I was cro-tatting, this wasn't even an issue. It was simple to start the next loop where the last one left off. With the shuttle, you have to be aware of which string to hold tension on so that your first stitch of the new loop stays in place. The other thing I'm finding as a new tatter is that the quality of thread really does make a difference. In particular, I think you need a tight and well set twist. I was practicing with one brand of size 10 cotton and I kept having to let my shuttle hang and unwind. The cotton kept trying to ply on me which was a nuisance, not to mention the fact that it can spoil a picot. I hope you don't mind coming on this tatting journey with me. In the meantime, I'm doing my best to not neglect Wind Rose Fiber Studio. I have 2 1/2 pounds of Merino drying out in the sun right now. They are destined to become my next batch of skin tone samplers. I'll be able to list them back in the shop tomorrow and they'll be ready to ship out Tuesday morning. I bought some butterfly hairclips recently and have this sudden urge to tat some butterflies. These are the first 2 I came up with - the pink one was tatted with Flora 20 threads, and the other with Manuela 20 thread. With a ribbon weaved through the body, I think they will make a quick bookmark. What do you think ? Watch out for 1 or 2 more variations. These will be part of Motif No. 13 for the 25-Motif Challenge. Next is my latest acquisition from ebay - a 1 1/2 inch Irish bog oak tatting shuttle that used 4000 year old Irish bog oak and inlayed with a simple Celtic swirl design in Malachite. And here's the feeding device Ivan drew from the basis sketch I talked about earlier. Ivan went through with me how the machine works (if it works, I wonder), but well, I'm still impressed!

Slice of watermelon tatting design by Marilee Rockley It's a slice of watermelon! Well, sort of, at least the best I could do for now. The pattern is a free download! Click here. I used size 10 thread with size 11/0 Toho seed beads for my sample, which measures 2 and 3/8" (6 cm) at the widest part. I'm working on some video demos to post on TikTok, expecting to edit them down later into YouTube shorts. The trickiest part is the green "rind" which is done in pearl tatting technique. Let me know if anything doesn't make sense in the pattern. Or, if it looks like a different object entirely! Somehow, looking at it now, I'm thinking UFO (unidentified flying object), lol.☺ Oh well, I really was trying for watermelon.
The little bird is from the Christmas tree pattern a couple posts back. the Secret Door Pattern I bought from imsooming I put a different type of stiffener on this, so some glue did show through. I love these and they are quick and easy to tat up and I will combine them with my little flowers Have a great day!

I am really loving this technique! I found some other items to cover with double knots! Here is a metal disk I made into a slide. Done in DMC metallic thread (the spool kind) a fresh water pearl and tiny silver beads. In the previous post I showed you the tiny heart that I made into an earring. In the same package came two more hearts medium and large. Here is what I did with the large one, another slide, made with the metallic and tiny beads. I think I may add some crystals or even a pearl for the next one. Sometimes you have to work through these to get the covering right and the balance of the rings before you can add extra. Not bad for a first try especially with the metallic which I love but can be quite troublesome when working with it. I've seen that Plaid has some other metal pieces that may work with this technique so I'm off to tat for the day!

I tried to post last night, but it wouldn't upload my picture. I tatted a size 40 Lizbeth Tropical Punch butterfly. Today, I had to take a friend for pre-surgery testing and while I was there I decided to tat another butterfly in Yarnplayer's Corsage size 40 HDT. And a man there waiting saw me and said I had a lot more patience than him. And he told me that his mom used to tat edging for tablecloths, pillowcases, curtains, and clothes. And then a lady came and asked what I was making and I showed her the last 2 butterflies and she asked what I would do with them and I said they could be sewn on clothes or stretchy headbands or whatever. And she said that her granddaughters would love them. Well, before I left I gave her the 2 butterflies and she almost wouldn't take them, but she now has a gift for each of her granddaughters and a little knowledge of tatting. :)
