Cute tatting lace bookmark pattern
Well, march was a busy month. During that time though, I did get some tatting finished. Done in Lizbeth size 20, #184 and #657. For my cousin's birthday, I made Jane Eborall's Fandango bookmark. I really like how these colors go with each other. (Do I comment on my satisfaction with my color choices too much? That's one of the pre-tatting decisions I always fret about, especially when the finished piece is going to be a present.) The pattern was enjoyable, and I'll probably use it again in the future. Done in Lizbeth size 20, #647 and #680. I gave this Flowery SCMR bookmark (also by Jane Eborall) to my aunt as a thank you gift. I didn't realize it until she pointed it out, but the colors are mine and my sister's favorite colors. An amusing oversight on my part, to not realize that. I had a lot of fun with this pattern, especially when I got to the over the top joins. Done in Lizbeth size 80, #104 and #665. This Simple Celtic Knot bookmark by Toptattyhead was made for my sister, who likes celtic designs. This was my first real attempt at using more then two shuttles at a time, and it was fun. A bit challenging at first, but overall it was simply fun. This pattern was a good introduction into using four shuttles at a time, and I hope to use this knowledge again in the future. Done in Lizbeth size 20, #152 and #638. Motif # 6 of my second challenge. Ah, the Spiral bookmark by Gina. It's one of my favorite bookmark patterns, and this time I decided to try making a tassel. For my first time making a tassel, I think it looks alright. I made this for a friend's surprise birthday party. Done in Lizbeth size 20, #618, #620, and #644. Motif #7 of my second challenge. Look, it's not a bookmark! Nope, it is a Cupcake by Be-stitched. I made this for another friend's birthday. Her favorite color is pink, though I don't think this is strawberry flavored. Done in Lizbeth size 20, #680. Motif #8 of my second challenge. And then we have the Tatty Turtle by Mark Myers. This was actually one of the first patterns I did when new to tatting, and it was fun to revisit it. Turtles are really cute.
It’s been quite some time since I last posted here in the journal, but with good reason! I travelled to Korea at the start of the year to film an online tatting class with Class101 . It was my first time preparing a class curriculum and being filmed, and I was very nervous about the whole thing. Ho

I made a few small adjustments to the onion ring edging and came up with an onion ring bookmark. I've created a basic printable pattern which you can find on my free patterns page or go to directly by clicking HERE. If you notice any errors in the pattern, please let me know. I tatted the bookmark in DMC size 40 white, because I had some left over from my onion ring magic square. Then, I made another version in DMC size 80 variegated violet: The violet version measures 1 inch across and the white version measures 1.4 inches across. The bookmarks can be made to any length you want.
I've got to stop tatting things that will get songs stuck in my head. This time it was "Black Magic Woman" by Santana. The pattern, of course, is Mary Konior's "Black Magic" from Tatting with Visual Patterns. Thanks to Jeff for illustrating how fabulous it can look in a variegated thread; I might never have done this if I hadn't seen his posts. I used Lizbeth color 644 Boysenberry Dark on the shuttle and Lizbeth 137 Berry Burst on the ball. It was sheer luck that the colors worked out so symmetrically, but I do love it when that happens. For the tail, I wound a second shuttle and tatted a combination of zig zag chain, split rings, and Victorian sets, ending in a motif that matches the bookmark. To make this motif, I transitioned out of the tail at a point where the variegated thread on shuttle 2 matched the solid on shuttle 1. This allowed me to unobtrusively turn the center ring of the motif into a split ring, making the split at the last set of stitches. I then climbed out of it with a mock picot and continued tatting around the center ring as if it were the one of the ends of the bookmark. Wasn't that clever of me? (She said very modestly.) I actually finished this bookmark several days ago, but couldn't get it blocked until today. I can no longer block anything on days that I have to work, owing to Squijum's pin-munching habit and the fact that there is no longer anyplace in the apartment that he doesn't know how to get to. When I switched to this new background, I had to go back to a 2-column layout. Does anyone know a way to get a 3-column layout in Minima template? Also, does anyone have any idea why my Google Translate gadget has disappeared? It's still there, right under the Search This Blog gadget, but you can't see it (or at least I can't). Any help would be appreciated!

I couldn't stop tatting these delightful leaves, but I get creative and added flowers for a touch of colours and for more weight to the portion of the bookmark that will hang outside the book. Prefer the pink roses (pattern of Jeanne Lugert). The doll-ATCs were in from Linda Marino! The bottom 2 were for the June's 4 Seasons Swap; the top 2 were for an earlier Fibre Swap which I never receive from my partner and Lin was such a dear to send me a set. All so bright and cheerful, and cute too, really lift my spirit everytime I look at them! Thank you, Lin! Spent a weekend helping my girl, Joey, for her school project, embellishing this yellow fabric with the Youth Olympics Games theme. I cut the felt words for her based on her sketch, and we explore difference ways to embellish them. She matched the colours and did the sewing herself. This was the last opera written by W.A.Mozart, just before his death, and is his most popular operatic work - The Magic Flute. I have watched it once in 2007, a 100-minute production sung in English by the New York's Metropolitan Opera, screened in Golden Village's GVmax on its 22.4 m width screen. Not quite anything like watching it live, but the big screen was a plus, and what to complain when it was only S$15 a ticket! Although Tan Dun's The First Emperor, directed by Zhang Yimou, and with the legendary tenor, Plácido Domingo, as Emperor Qin, left a much deeper impression of the 2 screenings then, I was still pretty excited to get to watch The Magic Flute again, this time live at the theatre. Sang at the Esplanade Theatre last Saturday, in German but dialogue in English, the love story of Prince Tamino and Princess Pamina unfolded the magical fantasy world of Die Zauberflote. This time, I can better appreciate the music, and of course, the Queen of the Night's Die Holle Racht in Act II. The silly exchanges between the lovelorn bird catcher Papageno and Papagena, singing ‘Pa-pa-pa’ for about 48 times was tickling on the rib bones. Clearly from the applauses, Tai Hsia-Chun as the Queen of the Night and Song Kee Chang as Papageno were the 2 most favourite characters in the opera. Again, we have Nancy Yuen, soprano (Singapore) in La Boheme, singing the part of Pamina!

Simple and quick! I took the pink butterfly and some of my other tatted bookmarks and jewelry to the consignment boutique where I sell some of my work. The shop owner, (who loves my tatting) didn't want to carry bookmarks at first -- "I've had other bookmarks here, and they just sit..." but couldn't resist keeping just a few of mine at the shop. I got a phone call a few hours later from the shop owner, "I just sold the pink butterfly! The lady would also like one in purple!" So I did a variety of purples! Last Saturday I met with the Oklahoma Shuttle Bugs Tatting Group. One of my tatting friends gave me a copy of Jane Eborall's flowery bookmark pattern. When I got home I picked out this lovely variegated Lizbeth Size 20 thread named sherbet delight. I thought the medium leave green goes well with it. I really like this pattern. There are split rings, self closing mock rings and special joins to keep things interesting. I still need to block it before I give it to my friend for a hostess gift. This is my motif # 12 the second time around. Jane Eborall has a very extensive free pattern page. Thank you Jane for sharing your lovely patterns with all of us! Here is the URL for the pattern: http://www.e.n.e.btinternet.co.uk/Flowerbookmark.pdf

Back in 2009, I participated in a bookmark exchange with the online tatting group, In Tatters. I wanted to do something unique for my partner, so I looked through many books and patterns online and found an edging in the book Tatting Patterns by the staff of WorkBasket Magazine which ultimately inspired the design of this bookmark. Many people think tatting is beautiful, but they aren’t so fond of doilies. Bookmarks are an effective way to showcase tatting and create an item for yourself or friends that will be appreciated for its beauty, strength and practicality. A tatted bookmark is a beautiful and luxurious thing to give as a gift to someone special! A display of several beautiful models from talented designers.
Unusual elegant bookmark. It was made by hand using the tatting lace method. Beautiful metallic shiny thread emphasize delicacy of lace. Bookmark is ideal for gift. Ended with hand woven rope and tassel. The tatting lace is an extremely precise and labor-intensive technique. It consists of thousands knots tied manually using a shuttle. For many years I have been specializing in this technique. I choose the highest quality threads and beads so that my jewelry was not only beautiful and properly composed, but also durable and pleasant to wear. I pack my jewelry in a decorative box. I also have one other etsy shop. You can find patterns and tutorials for tatting shuttle jewelry: https://www.etsy.com/shop/NamiArt
The pattern for this pretty clover bookmark designed by Esther Leavitt is free from Craftown.com. Go to the post.
Tatting pattern for a lacy vintage style Butterfly bookmark. This bookmark is my own unique design and has been designed for Size 20 cotton, but could be made with a thread of your choice. This pattern starts with shuttle and ball threads and then the ball thread is placed onto a 2nd shuttle to complete the split rings and then either the rosette or butterfly motif. The butterfly motif has a central ring and two rows of wings (chains) around it. The tassel is made with split rings with a rosette motif or small butterfly motif at the end to finish off. The full length of the bookmark when made with Size 20 cotton, is approximately 12 cm and the large butterfly is 4.5 cm wide. An option has also been provided to use this pattern to make a pendant, if desired. The finished product in this design is also available from my Etsy shop.
This is one of my first attempts at designing. I wanted a bookmark that would look something like a miniature doily, but that would go together rather quickly. This was…
I had some spare black thread left on my shuttles, and decided to use it to tat a few small squares. As I was tatting, I started to wonder what it would look like if I joined the triangular ring clusters a little bit differently...staggered and in a straight line for a bookmark. So, after a bit of sketching and measuring, this is what I came up with (pictured alongside the little black squares I was tatting): In the end, it's just a slight variation of an earlier bookmark I was working on, which has the ring clusters side by side. The new version is tatted in Lizbeth size 80 Easter Eggs. The earlier version is done in Lizbeth size 20, light pink (I can't remember the exact color name). Two Bookmarks pattern Click Here For the variation, I didn't get the picots on the central chains placed correctly, so it looks a little sloppy to me. I'm eliminating them and just leaving a clean center for the next one, but I think it might also look nice with criss cross picots. I don't know if I will actually get around to trying the criss cross picots though, as I always seem to be battling with finding enough time to put all of these ideas into use. I'm currently working on writing patterns for these bookmarks and am aiming to have them ready in a couple of weeks. That's assuming I don't get distracted by anything else.

Here is another bookmark I recently finished. The pattern is the free monthly pattern for December 2010 by Nancy Tracy. Here is the link for her free patterns: www.be-stitched.com/tattingpatterns.asp There is also a link to sign up to receive the free monthly pattern. If you haven't already done that you might want to do it. It's a real treat to get a free pattern by e-mail once a month. Thank you Nancy! There were oodles and gobbles of threads to be sewed in. If I should make another, I will definitely split ring from one motif to the next. I made some adjustments to the green border and really like the end result. The thread used is vintage Size 30 Coats. This is my motif # 4 the second time around.
