Are you ready for back to school? I am! Actually, we already had our first day of school and we are just about in full swing. It was a great first 3 days of school and I know next week will be even better as we begin to build some routines. Here are a few of my favorite things from the first day. You are "of-fish-ally" in kindergarten! I had a spot ready for every student with a water bottle (super important!), gold fish, coloring page, and this year I added a little pencil box with manipulatives inside. It went great! I was able to answer parent questions, calm nervous kiddos, and keep everyone in their seat while we got our bearings in the first 15 minutes. Everyone enjoyed coloring this page from Creative Lesson Cafe and I am keeping it for their portfolios. Oh, they enjoyed the snack too! You can get the labels for free HERE! Morning Meeting I wanted to start the first day off right with a morning meeting so I could get that routine rolling. I liked adding this question to the end of our morning message. We read First Day Jitters first to show that even teachers can feel nervous on the first day. Most of my kiddos said they were happy or excited but a few were honest and said they were sad or nervous. We only had 2 cryer's this year, so most of them really were just happy or excited! First Day Name Project This is my FAVORITE back to school project! My mentor teacher showed me this about 12 years ago when I first started kindergarten and I still love it every year! This was the first year I got to actually take part because (long story) I've shared 2 half day classes with another teacher and she always did this with them but I got to enjoy the fruits of her labor. We went full day this year (no more sharing two groups) so I got to do it this year! It wasn't as easy as I remember! I blame it on a clogged glue bottle but the instructions are pretty simple: Trace each child's name on black or white paper in pencil. Prepare small pieces of rainbow construction paper. Trace the first letter of each child's name with glue and give them a red piece of construction paper. Students tear tiny pieces to cover the glue. When students finish their letter I have them raise their hand (good teaching moment on the first day) and I come by and trace the next letter with glue and give them the next color (orange, yellow, green, blue...) Have some bins with manipulatives ready for them to use if they finish fast! I love the result! We hang these in the hallway and they stay there all year. We usually do white paper but went with black this year. I love how they turned out! I have this activity and so many more all wrapped up in one happy package HERE in this Surviving Kindergarten post. Ok, last but certainly not least...I got this cute "Happy First Day" treat from one of my sweeties. It was SO GOOD at about 3:30 after the first day of school when I was totally exhausted and totally forgot I was on a diet. Oh well....every delicious calorie was worth it! What are your favorite activities to do on the first day? There are so many options! Our first day went great, I hope yours does too! Here are all of our favorite Back to School Rules and Procedures to introduce in the first few days! And some FREEBIE labels too! Save this post for later!
Work smarter not harder should be stamped across every teacher's doorway because we never have enough time to do all we need to do. Do you ever leave at the end of the day thinking, "Wow! I got everything done. Now I can go home, make a real meal, and relax." If you are like most teachers, you are probably making a mental list on your way home of all the things you need to get done between now and tomorrow morning, right? I stumbled across this work smarter way of doing morning messages when I was doing my long term lesson plans when I was pregnant. I love morning messages for elementary students and feel they do a great job of reviewing skills, but it was so time consuming to write a message on chart tablet. The tablet is big and bulky. It was a challenge to take it home with me to prepare ahead of time which meant I needed to do it at school. I didn't always have extra time to write a quality message at school. I didn't want my maternity leave sub to have to write messages. She was going to have her hands full with getting to know 22 little kinder kids and all that entails. I did a little brainstorming and decided that I can type much faster than I can write by hand. So, I typed up my first morning message, made a transparency (did I mention that this was in 1999), and put it on the overhead projector. Since this was kindergarten, this was a very teacher directed lesson. Volunteers helped by filling in the blanks, circling word wall words, circling first letter of the sentence with a green marker, circling punctuation mark at the end of the sentence with red, etc. Once my students learned the format, I had the paper waiting on their tables for them. I gave them a few minutes to see if they could figure out some of the message. They loved it! Eventually, some of the tables began to work as teams. I loved the cooperative learning that I was seeing and all of the reading taking place. Eventually, I could see my students were getting restless with the format. They were getting through with it much too quickly. So, I organized a check in station like the one in the picture below. After students put away their backpack, lunch boxes, and turned in their homework, they picked up their morning message at the table by the check in station and found out what their tasks was for the day. The tasks are the cards beside the number. The number is their group number. In the beginning, I only gave them one task. Later on, I gave them 2 tasks. If you shrink the cards or you have a wider pocket chart, you can give them more tasks. You can assign the same tasks to different groups. TEACHER HINT: In this picture is the small pocket chart from Target's Dollar Spot. I printed the differentiation cards at 75% so I could fit two for each group. I thought you might like to see a sample page and answer sheet of morning message. This would perfect for your Back to School lessons. Click HERE to download this FREE sample. I have a wide variety of morning message packet. They are available in topics such as: Back to School Fall Fun (can be used in September, October, or November) Martin Luther King Jr. Winter Olympics Chinese New Year: FREE Father's Day: FREE Summer I also have monthly packets for the following grade levels: Kindergarten 1st Grade 2nd Grade 3rd Grade By request, I bundled my September - May grade level packets. I love the fact that I've had this blog for a few years now, and 90% of my posts have been written in the months of June, July, and August! What does that tell you about how busy we are as teachers?! Summer break is surely a well-deserved gift that bestows upon us the 3 Rs: relaxation, refreshment, and reflection. (I disregarded "rest" because I have a 2 year old son, and like many other teacher-moms, that "R" has been R-emoved from my life for now and the foreseeable future!) Anyway, as I spend some time reflecting this summer, it becomes clearer and clearer to me how ALL children, regardless of their home/family life, could benefit from more personal guidance and character education. Sometimes I have to think back to myself as a fourth grader to truly remember just how impressionable, yet insightful, they are at that age. They also thrive so much on structure and appreciate little classroom traditions that their teacher has in place just for them. I thought a sweet way to address both needs would be to post a different "Quote of the Week" in the same spot in my classroom this year. As I change it out each Monday morning, I want the words of someone else other than just me to motivate them. I want my students to do some reflecting of their own by simply looking in the same spot each Monday for a new, positive, thought-provoking message and be able to chew on it throughout the week and (hopefully) beyond. As I assembled my collection of quotes, I was sure to work in the ones that have always resonated with me, like my favorite teaching mantra: ...as well as a few words of wisdom that were quoted by current, recognizable-to-anyone role models. I even worked in Taylor Swift! Michael Jordan, Maya Angelou, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Abraham Lincoln are just a few of the greats that are included. Of course, I also had to throw in a quote that inspires the art of WRITING! So, whether it's a "Quote of the Week," a set of writing nudges, decor for a peaceful classroom environment, or just a pick-me-up for you to keep at your own desk, I hope that you can use these posters, too, to sprinkle some inspiration into your classroom in the upcoming school year. Just be sure to get in your 3 Rs (or if you're lucky, all 4) first! CLICK HERE to download all 28 posters! If you've made it all the way to the end of this post, please build on the inspiration by leaving a comment with YOUR favorite quote! Spread joy!
