Übungsblatt zur Grobbestimmung der Sekunde, Terz, Quinte und Sexte.
The 'Terz' designation adds a layer of fascination to this instrument. Derived from the Italian word for "third", 'Terz' denotes an instrument tuned a minor third higher than standard pitch. This unique tuning not only imparts a bright and articulate character to the sound but also invites exploration and creativity in musical expression, the perfect tool for a musician struggling with "writer's block". Central to its allure is the enigmatic 'Mystery Top', a feature found in Martin guitars produced in 1953 and between 1957 and 1962. As the name suggests, the origin of this top wood remains shrouded in mystery, inviting speculation and curiosity. While it's anyone's guess (although legend says Martin kept this info in their shop notes from 1957-onward), our conjecture leans towards the revered Adirondack (Red) Spruce, known for its unmatched tonal qualities and resonance. This is mainly due to yellow-ish discolouration which is so typical for Red Spruce. Crafted in 1957, this Martin Terz embodies the essence of Martin's craftsmanship and innovation and can still be witnessed in its original form. It even travels in its original case! Though its short journey through Adrian's hands in our repair shop included a few re-glued bindings, its soulful resonance remains untouched, echoing with the melodies of bygone eras.Whether you're a musician seeking inspiration or a collector drawn to the allure of vintage craftsmanship, embrace the opportunity to own a piece of musical history and embark on a journey of sonic discovery with this illustrious '57 Martin Terz.

This beautiful antique guitar has been completely restored and is in an excellent condition. Ready to play! It has been no doubt made around 1840 in Vienna, as it is a typical representative of Viennese guitar making of that time. It features an all solid wood ladder braced construction. Spruce top, solid flame maple sides and a new one piece flame maple back. It has a straight neck with low action. There is ebonized fretboard, maple bridge and ebony tuning pegs. Bridge pins are authentic with mothe of peal inlay. There is a couple of old repairs on the soundboard. All have been carefully examined and checked, they do not ipair function of this instrument in any way. This guitar offers gentle, yet well defined sound with lots of character. It has been strung with new nylon D'addario normal tendion strings, it would no doubt work well with gut strings as well. The scale length is 570 mm, nut width is 44 mm. Bridge (from E to E string) is 55mm. Please don't hesitate to contact me for any further information.
Does anyone remember Marty Robbins? Was there anything Marty Robbins couldn’t do? Robbins was a Country and Pop singer-songwriter. He had an beautiful and distinct voice. He had a bunch of hit records, White Sports Coat, El Paso, The Streets of Laredo, Devil Woman and My Woman, My Wife. Robbins also played the guitar. He was a movie star and he was a professional NASCAR driver with ten Top 10 finishes. What I remember most about Robbins is his little Martin 5-18 guitar that was his trademark. It was never mic'd. He didn't even use a strap. But he consistently was strumming away at that little instrument like it was a ukulele. The guitar that Marty Robbins played is also known by the proper name of the Terz guitar. A Terz guitar is a small guitar tuned up a minor third higher than normal tuning so the open strings are G-C-F-A#-D-G, however it can be played in normal tuning. The neck is shorter, in the case of the Martin 5-18 the neck has a 21.4” scale. The body is also smaller than a full size instrument. The word Terz is German for third. It seems guitarists have always been stretching the boundaries of coming up with new sounds for the guitar. During the early 19th century the Terz guitar was an excellent way of augmenting a guitar duet. 5-18 There were even orchestral concertos written using a Terz guitar. The smaller body and higher pitch resulted in a brighter sound that cut through the orchestra. Though it was not any louder, we seem to more readily hear high frequencies. The Italian version of the Terz guitar was a tiny instrument, while the Viennese version was much like the Martin. In fact we know that Charles Freidrich Martin was affiliated with the Viennese company, Stauffer. Stauffer offered a Terz model. Strings for these instruments were a lighter guage than for a normal 650mm scale neck. This was of course prior to metal or even nylon strings. The Stauffer Terz instrument was made with a spruce top, and maple back and sides with rosewood binding. Though Terz guitars are probably not practical in today’s music, they are interesting and an alternative to parlor guitars. Neil Young's Martin 5-18 Marty Robbins was not the only guy that owned one. According to his family, Johnny Cash regularly played a Martin 5-18 at his home and on the road as a songwriting instrument. Michael Hedges played a 5-18. Sting was also fond of his Terz model. Martin has made two models of the Terz guitar and has his own model. The Martin 5-18, which is currently available as the Marty Robbins Model and the Martin Claire Guitar, which was a tribute to Chris Martin's daughter. It is no longer in production. 5-15 From a historical prospective, Martin built the first 5-18 in 1918. From 1918 to 1922 the 5-18's were braced for gut strings. Beginning in 1923 to the present the Martin 5-18's are braced for steel strings. 5-15 Martin built three versions of the Terz instrument; the 5-18, the 5-28 and the 5-15. The Martin Claire guitar was commissioned by Chris Martin in honor of his daughter Requinto Based on the fact the Terz is a small guitar, what is the difference between a Terz and a Requinto? The requinto is a Spanish style small bodied instrument that was built to essentially do the same thing a Terz guitar does, only in a Mariachi band. The Requinto provides a soprano voice. When compared to 19th century classic Terz instruments (actually it was not the classic era, but the romantic era), the only differences are the tunings and the Requinto tends to have the same body depth as a full size guitar. The Requinto is normally tuned A-D-G-C-E-A. The modern Requinto is strung with nylon strings and readily available at most large music stores for a price under $500. Viennese Quint To make matters more confusing, during the Romantic Music Era, Viennese luthiers also made a Quint guitar, designed to be tuned a fourth higher than a regular guitar. Modern classical guitar luthiers can build instruments to any size that is specified. The little Martin Terz instrument is somewhat expensive, $3300 to $4000. Martin currently does not produce size 5 guitars. Another alternative would be Martins LX line of Little Martins. The scale is slightly longer at 23", the neck joins at the 14th fret and most versions of this guitar are made of wood laminate, although some have solid tops. The Little Martins sell for around $329 to $439.

The late, great Lance McCollum has left us with an impressive body of work from terz guitars to double necks, harp guitars to wonderful flattops like this Slope D from 2007 in Sapele and Adirondack Spruce. Build weight is a slim 4lbs 4oz, which makes for an easy playing experience, and Lance outfitted this number with a slim neck profile and slotted headstock veneered with more gorgeously figured Sapele, plus gold Gotoh tuners. Scale length is 25 3/4” for added tension, pop, and power—all of which this McCollum has in spades—and a 1 13/16” nut for a little extra lefthand room. Herringbone trim throughout, plus Maple bindings to contrast with the Sapele and Ady.Other keywords: 312, lutherie, luthier, slope dreadnought, slope shoulder, allen shadd, flatpick, bluegrass, sapale, tonewood, adriondackStatus: in_stockBrand: McCollumModel: Slope DreadnoughtSerial #: 312New/Preowned: PreownedSKU: TMP2475Condition: A few play marks and light fret wear. Ernie Ball Earthwood Mini / Terz guitar vintage 1977 This is a super rare baby guitar, made by Ernie Ball. Mostly know for their string business and the Music Man Van Halen and Stingray basses, for a short period in the 1970, the company also offered a flattop guitar and an acoustic bass under the “Earthwood” name. While these are rare on the vintage market, the baby guitar made under that same name must be called super rare. In several decades of collecting vintage instruments, I have only ever seen three of those. Stamped inside is the number G130. Their rarity is a shame, as these mini guitars turned out a rather successful experiment at creating a lovely and very useful musical instrument. With a body size of 11 inches and a scale length of 19 ½ inches, it can be tuned to high A or even C, resulting in a heavenly, chimey tone that ranges somewhere between the ¾ guitars that Martin and Gibson offered for a time, and a guitar set up for “Nashville tuning”, which is a full octave above standard. The problem with this latter tuning tends to be that standard sized guitars have too large a body with too thick bracing to allow the higher tuning to really breath. A considerably smaller bodied, shorter scale guitar like this Ernie Ball baby can do exactly this. The construction with 16 frets free of the body and a cutaway allows unparalleled access to the higher register, and the substantial neck dimension make it easy to play for hands that are used to normal guitar. Make no mistake: These are high quality professional instruments, using fine solid wood – mahogany for back, sides, neck, spruce for the top, ebony for fingerboard and bridge, an a headstock veneer of quilted maple inlaid with other types of eye-catching wood. The clever neck joint construction allows for neck angle adjustment, should it ever be needed, but certainly not now, as the angle is perfect, as is playability. The Schaller tuners make it stay in tune just fine. This is an all-original vintage baby guitar (I cannot think of any other vintage brand that offered something like this) in very fine condition. It comes with a gig bag that is also original. A super instrument not only for traveling but for also for recording or just for having fun playing in a different register. For size comparison, I have added photo that puts it next to a Martin Tiple, which is about the size of a ukulele.Scale length: 19 ½ inches (49cm), Body width 11 inches (28cm), neck width at nut 4,2cm.

This design is a modified 1/2 size Montana or Amigo brand lightly used vintage classical guitar, (both made in made in Romania by the same maker), with a solid spruce top, which is rare in lower range guitars. Along with any touchups and refinishing needed, I've restrung it with new classical nylon and wound strings for the higher tuning in the same pattern as a standard guitar. The size and string weight is just right to work equally well as a requinto, alto guitar, or Terz guitar. Total length is 32”, with a string scale of 20.5”. Here are the standard tunings for each (same pattern , just higher or lower): Requinto (a common Latin American instrument) : A-D-G-C-E-A Alto Guitar: B-E-A-D-Gb-B Terz Guitar: G-C-F-Bb-D-G The requinto tuning is also the same as a standard guitalele, with a larger body and more resonant sound. I'll send it tuned to requinto unless otherwise requested, but retuning is easy. Decorative touches include handprinted hibiscus flowers, and design elements of genuine walnut overlay and genuine abalone shell on the end of the body and the headstock. I also add a 1 1/4" side sound hole, to give more sound to the player without compromising structural integrity. I add a sound hole to nearly all of my personal instruments. Everything then gets a protective coat of satin/semi-gloss varnish. I'm a serious musician as well as an artist and want this to be an instrument you love in all respects. I always adjust the nut and bridge height for optimal playability, and the sound quality of these guitars is lovely for a compact instrument. A lightly padded black gig bag is included. I keep a supply of these beautiful vintage instruments on hand and ready to customize, so if you would like any variation on any of the details, please message before ordering in case it will affect the pricing. Minor changes usually have no effect on price. International orders may add an import duty upon pickup. Please check ahead with your postal service.
