Have you ever tried extracting colors from plants? There are hundreds of plants bearing beautiful dyes, growing all around us. Yes, some plants are traditionally recognized as basic dye sources, but if you open your eyes and look around, you will find an abundance of color in front of your door. I made a list of plants local to me, but I strongly encourage you to try plants that grow around where you live. And living in a city is no excuse here! I live in a big city myself - but even in Berlin, Germany I found enough plants to make a full spectrum of color.
Often referred to as dolls for their diminutive size and simplified imagery, these wood figures dressed in carefully crafted garments are frequently found in tombs from ancient Peru. Because there are no written records from this time period, their precise meaning and significance is not known. However, it's theorized that these figures represent those interred in the tomb or their family members. This particular example shows a female, wearing a long dress, not unlike those known from the later Inca period, when women pinned textiles at their shoulders something like Roman togas. The meaning of the staring eyes and brightly colored faces of these figures is unknown.

Lam has an upcoming solo exhibition at Stephanie Chefas Projects in Portland, Oregon which opens on October 5, and will be the artist-in-residence from October 8 to November 9, 2018, at Teton Art Lab in Jackson, Wyoming.
