In the first instalment I posted a series of pictures (kindly provided by Calum) of bee houses near Lindau in Bavaria, Germany. The images showed ‘properties’ towards the budget end of the market, offering the bare minimum – a roof overhead and sometimes little more. However, with a bit more time, ingenuity, money and a willingness to ruthlessly exploit the planning laws all sorts of things are possible … Functional minimalism Here are a couple of bee houses built to a similar design. Every beekeeping association that runs a winter course for beginners will teach swarm control. In almost every case they use the artificial swarm method that evolved from that promoted by James Pagden (1814-1878). So universal is this teaching that the terms ‘Pagden’ and ‘artificial swarm’ are used almost interchangeably. Swarm
After the bee shed comes the bee house. However, in a break from tradition, this is a post about solitary bees rather than honey bees. Solitary bees include things like the Red Mason Bee. These were very common where I lived in the Midlands but this species of solitary bee is very much rarer in Scotland, although they are present in parts of Fife. Red mason bee … Steven Falk book I’ve no idea what’s about in this area of Fife so I’m putting up a couple of solitary bee houses to see if I ca

Synopsis : The presence of brood in all stages (of development) is an important indicator of the state of your colony. Is it queenright? Is it expanding or contracting? Quantifying the various developmental stages – eggs, larvae and pupae – is not necessary, but being able to determine changes in their proportions is very useful. Introduction There’s something very reassuring about the words ’brood in all stages’ to a beekeeper, or at least to this beekeeper. It means, literally, that

A hive stand provides a strong and stable support for hives, a space to work and protection for your back. A well designed hive stand should be easy to assemble, rot proof and able to cope with uneven ground.

You’ve inspected your colony and discovered queen cells on one or more frames. Queen cells … Do you want the good news or the bad news? The good news is that your colony is building up well and with a little careful management and luck you’ll be able to
Crownboards cover the hive under the roof and are typically ply with one or two holes designed for feeding and/or Porter bee escapes. Since the most basic function they serve is to prevent the roof being propolised down they can be as simple as a sheet of thick polythene cut to size. The semi-translucent stuff they wrap new furniture in is particularly good. Assuming bottom bee space this can be laid across the top of the frames, easily peeled up for inspections and discarded once it gets too me

Having introduced swarm prevention last week it’s probably timely to now consider the basic principles of swarm control. This is going to be relatively high level overview of why swarm control works (which it usually does if implemented properly), rather than a detailed ‘how to’ guide. That’s because knowing what to do and when to do it is so much easier if you understand why you’re doing it. That way, when faced with a colony clearly committed to swarming, you can manipulate the colony

Aristotle not in his beesuit Almost every article or review on chronic bee paralysis virus {{1}} starts with a reference to Aristotle describing the small, black, hairless ‘thieves‘, which he observed in the hives of beekeepers on Lesbos over 2300 years ago {{2}}. It’s the end of our third season using a bee shed, and the end of the first season using the ‘new and improved’ bee shed mark 2. What’s worked and what hasn’t? Why keep bees in a shed at all? A bee hive provides a secure and weatherproof container to protect the colony {{1}}. Why then keep bee hives inside a building, like the bee shed? Moving in day … Beekeeping, of necessity, involves regular inspections at 7-10 day intervals throughout the main part of the season. These inspections

Under construction … The bee shed is a new development in my beekeeping. It was built to house the colonies we need for our work on deformed wing virus. This requires access to larvae and pupae for as long as possible during the year … it therefore seemed worthwhile trying to keep colonies in a sheltered environment in the hope that the queen would rear brood for longer. An additional benefit is that colonies can be opened in poor weather. Due to the timing of the development cycle of bees we

Honey bucket tipper … If you bottle honey from large buckets or tanks you usually have to tip the container to avoid the slightly scummy surface layer which can spoil the appearance of several jars if you’re not careful. As the level drops you need to tip the bucket at an increasingly acute angle. Of course, you also need to tip the bucket to get the dregs out as well. This can all get a little precarious. There are a number of solutions available commercially. Thorne’s sell a honey tipper whi
