A very special home in Skinners Shoot, designed and built by the occupants from local materials.
So many of my blog readers will never step foot through our doors, so often I keep those of you in mind so you can see what it feels like in the shop. Maison Decor is located at 150 Main Street, Reading, Mass in a suburban New England town and we feel right at home after getting such a warm welcome from so many who live here. I love that many mention how pleased they are to have a small independent business in their town, and not another chain or big box store or pizza place popping up. The "shopping local" philosophy is truly what helps our small family business succeed! Without our shoppers continued support we would never be able to make it. Do you know we love when one of our "regulars" walks in and checks out the latest and even if we don't have what they want this time, they promise to be back. And yes they do come back! Many of our things are one of a kinds and they are sold quickly. So come look around and just say hi~or ask us if you are looking for anything in particular, we are also furniture hunters. We have a customer request list that is filled with the particulars they are looking for. We will send an email or a text and shoot over a photo when we track down something they might like. So thank you thank you thank you to all of our new customers and old regulars! And for those of you sitting in your armchairs in Texas, (or where ever) this post is for you! We took our big long industrial table and turned it into our check out counter. We love how it looks. I made a burlap skirt for the front by stapling it underneath and it is working out great. Its the perfect height for a counter too. You can see Justin at work on the computer at a desk we have facing the wall underneath the color chart display. This old industrial table was actually used for assembling the tops to bombs in World War II. It has seen a lifetime of activity, but I bet it likes being in our store best! Other vignettes come together when we get new things in, like a pair of tufted back club chairs. This series of Pagoda Prints is wonderful and we do sell them separately if all you need is one. Grey and metallic and iron all mix it up on a dresser top. Justin created this Book on Hooks whimsical display. Its pure nonsense, but so fun to look at! Does anyone else think it reminds them of a Harry Potter moment? The hooks are branches and they were installed upside down, and the books are vintage. Nothing whimsical about this vignette~ its old school European country. Our lovely antique mora flanks a country chest. Colors are French Linen/Old White Chalk Paint mix of 50/50 for the grey areas, and Old Ochre Chalk Paint for the rest of the piece. Its ultra soft and elegant looking with just a bit of distressing. Only clear wax for the finish, no dark wax at all. This piece is getting lots of looks and the price is right... I have a feeling it won't be around long. So if you are in the neighborhood stop by and say hello and see if we have anything for your home, or ask us to look for what you need. Justin will add it to the list on our computer. Or give us a call on our official french hotline! Can you see that old phone behind J? Yup, it works and we use it all the time. This week I am taking 3 days off!! You wanna know why? Because we are hosting an Engagement dinner here this weekend and I need to whip everything into shape. Mr. Maison Decor came home last night and said it felt like the good old days around the house~everything is getting sparkled up and straightened out and I will be taking pics of it all and showing if off right here! Until then~have a great weekend! Oh yeah....I almost forgot! The Deluxe Mora Clock review!! We got the most lovely call from Antoinette who lives in the Hamptons. She ordered a Gustavian Grey Deluxe Mora clock last month. We figured she was pretty nervous about it because both Justin and I had spoken to her on the phone. Well she called today to say it had come and as she unwrapped it she was so happy with how stunningly beautiful it was! Justin spent many hours on that clock and in particular the clock face and she was beyond happy with it. We were happy she picked up the phone for the third time to let us know she was very a satisfied customer. So if any of you are on the fence, we have been getting very nice comments on them after they have been received. www.shopmaisondecor.com Go to our website above for more information on workshops, mora clocks, furniture as well as Chalk Paint®!

West Side of Front of House: Built around 1830 by Benjamin S. Skinner for his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Col. James Leigh of Land's End. The styles of the two houses are amazingly similar and reflect the height of plantation society homesteads in the Albemarle Region of northeastern North Carolina.
For the past two days, I have been giving my bathroom a "facelift." This is the main bathroom on the main level, meaning that any and all guests usually use this bathroom. I wanted to make it clean and fresh looking, despite the not so clean looking rest of the house. Also, I wanted to do it on the cheap level. Everything I do is on the cheap level, so why not try the bathroom? Here's how I did it.... When we first moved in, this bathroom was purple. PURPLE. Not a pretty purple. It was more of a 13 year old little girl's room purple. What were the owners thinking? To make matters worse, the tub, toilet, sink, and linoleum were all BLUE. I had painted the bathroom a khaki color just to get rid of the purple, and because the paint was sitting in my parents' garage. It also matched the shower curtain I had at the time. It worked, but it absolutely was not my favorite. So fast forward to Sunday: I went into my basement and looked at all of my leftover paint from other paint jobs. I had about a gallon left of the Antique White by Sherwin Williams that we used for the trim in the whole house. Knowing that I wanted a clean feel, I thought white would be the ultimate solution. So, I spent zero dollars on paint. Cha-ching. Next, I needed some curtains. But I couldn't really afford the kind of curtains I knew I wanted. I have been a fan of Miss Mustard Seed for quite some time now, and her favorite material she uses is Antique Hemp fabric. Thats exactly what I wanted in my bathroom. Well. As my budget would have it, I can't afford antique hemp, so I had to find a good substitution. I remember in past posts from Miss Mustard Seed that she used canvas drop cloth for almost everything before she found her love for the hemp. Ever since reading her blog, I have become OBSESSED with canvas drop cloth. ITS MY FAVORITE THING. I use it for everything. So I packed my kiddos up, and we went to Lowes. To make the curtains, I measured the length that I wanted them to be, which was exactly four feet. I wanted them hung almost all the way to the ceiling because it acts as an illusion. I have hideous linoleum, so I wanted the eye to be drawn upward instead of straight to the floor. See? Oh, I just cringe. And don't even get me started on that sink. Once, I measured, I laid the canvas on the living room floor. I cut the four feet in legnth. I wanted each panel to be about a yard so it would have room to bunch, so I also cut the width. Ta-da. I had two panels. DONE. I hung them up using clips. But once I hung them up, I felt like they needed something else. Something with some "fluff". So using the left over material, I cut two small panels of 14 inches tall by three feet wide. (That creese is where I marked 14 inches. I also made sure I did it against a seem so I would not have to hem the bottom) Then I just clipped them over top of the long panels. TA-DA. No sewing involved. That's my kind of project. Next, I did my shower curtain. Same concept, different dimensions. I hung the curtain almost to the ceiling too. You would not believe the difference it makes. Using some things around that house, I hung a few things that needed a new purpose for the bathroom. The "R" was a clearance find at Target for just a few dollars, the plate was sitting in a box in my parent's basement, and that picture was a cross stitch that I made when I was in high school. Don't laugh. Cross stitching was a secret hobby. That beautiful frame was one that I fell in love with when my mom owned a frame shop, so when she sold the store, I snatched this beauty. It was actually silver and I spray painted it white. Now that I had everything in place, and a fresh new bathroom, I needed to iron out the wrinkles in my curtains and shower curtain. What a dreaded task. But thankfully, my mom has a dress steamer. She's so handy to have around! Funny thing is, I don't have an outlet in my bathroom or in the hallway. So I had to use a 25 foot outdoor extension cord just to be able to use the steamer. Hilarious, right? What's that you ask? Where are my three screaming minions and how was I able to do all this? The older two were just "hanging out...." And my sweet baby was with me... See the shower curtain in the back ground? It was cute at the time I received it, but it's worn out it's welcome here at the Redman Roost. And there you have it folks, a cheap bathroom "facelift.'' The whole project cost me a whopping $26. Hallelujah and Amen.

That brings out so many emotions from sadness to hopefulness to joy to anger. So many emotions, but mostly excitement. Excitement because what we are doing now is preparing this beautiful room for a future child & that
