You know the cliche of a man and woman running towards each other in slow motion, through long, waving grass with wild flowers, backlight by a warm glow of slanting sun rays, a romantic sound track playing in the background? That's how I feel about my ducks, or rather, that's how they feel about me, I think. Whenever they see me in the yard, they run towards me, quacking excitedly, their whole bodies shaking with their wobbly gait. It gives my heart a little jump, feeling so openly loved by someone. Not that my husband doesn't love me - he does, deeply, but he just doesn't show it quite in the same enthusiastic, quacking, completely exuberant way. Frankly, it would freak me out if he did what my ducks do, and I am perfectly happy with the way he proves his love to me. Anyway: my ducks. I love 'em. They're called Ancona ducks, an endangered breed, and they eat tons of slugs, are always happy and showing it, give me gorgeous eggs, and are beautiful. I wrote an article on how to raise ducks in this month's issue of Grow Northwest Magazine. You can read it here. In the video below I'm, running away from them while trying to film how they chase me so they can hug me and kiss me beg for food. Some way or other, my days are spent nurturing animals, children, plants, and my friends. I like nurturing and mothering these beings: feeding, grooming, watering, cuddling, supporting and teaching them. I feel blessed to lead such a rich life with all these souls in them that love me and let me love them. Some of them are so darn cute, how could you not be in love with them? And when I've had enough of nurturing and it feels like too much and I just want to be left alone, I go hide in the garden to water my newly planted seeds, or I sneak some chocolate in the greenhouse. And then my beloved rubs my feet. See why I'm in love with him? He's cute, eh? (Although I assure you, I don't quack or wobble towards him when I see him). The goats have been getting lots of attention and visits from enthusiastic little humans. And since the grass is growing so beautifully, we've been leading them to pasture so they can chomp on the green stuff. The babies were clueless where to go the first time around, so they had to be carried. I will leave you with images from a day at the river with our inflatable kayak, my thriving seedlings, and a random photo of dough rising in front of the wood stove, in the midst of our chaotic and messy kitchen. What or who are you in love with these days?

Kim Stringfellow’s Jackrabbit Homestead exhibition at the Autry explores the homesteading movement, where people fled the urban sprawl of LA to set up by themselves in the desert – with many letting their abodes erode into the sand
Let’s take a stroll through some of our favorite country gardens over the years and see what makes them so inviting and carefree!
This is a collection of observations and meditations by Professor Emeritus (York University, Toronto) and philosopher Ato Sekyi-Otu on events, issues, people and ideas culled from recent history and the world, from the US and Canada to Ghana. If there is a persistent thread in these entries, it is this: Virtually all of them testify to the ironic truth of the saying that there is no place like home, no place, that is to say, which looks like the lodestar called home or comes close to approximating its promise of being a just space of human flourishing. Most of the entries are, therefore, harsh, particularly those on the USA. That is because that nation, in his view, has, in recent history, made a major contribution to rendering the world and every homestead we inhabit unhomely and sabotaging attempts to better it. But no one or place is spared, certainly not the author's native land, Ghana. Canada appears intermittently in these pages in rather fragmentary and contrastive observations. That paucity of comments may be taken to be the complement the author pays to Canada as a place of relative civility and glimmers of decency in a mad and cruel world. It is a short work of predominantly gloomy pictures. But there are a few countervailing images and invocations of hope here and there. There are 166 entries of unequal lengths arranged around 14 headings. These epigrams are contrapuntal variations on the philosopher's searing imprecation and visionary invocation: unfinished ode, resounding with intermittent fury, to the dawn of human existence set free from all tyrannizing enclosures. This post is all about fabulous poulets, their posh coops, and how they have been used to create a design trend. French Country interior decorating is inspired by sunny, rural, Southern France .Generally, there are two ways you can go here: the white, almost "shabby" look - pale, romantic and elegant with exposed natural elements such as stone walls and floors and beamed ceilings. The second kind, being featured in this post, has a more rustic, country feel - heavier and more solid with warmer colors, textures, and darker woods. Both of these looks will work well separately or together to give you the French Country decorating style. When choosing pictures or accessories for this kind of French Country, roosters are a very typical French theme – they are the national emblem of France...so choose anything with roosters on it, to make sure you get a very authentic, French Country interior design look. While roosters can be used in any room, kitchens are the best place to bring roosters into your design. Just a word of caution, don't over do it and have roosters all over the place. Be subtle and choose your accessories well. You will have a better, more refined look. This stone rooster is a great focal point for this country vignette. This is a lovely example of how roosters are used as decor in French County styled kitchens. This is a great way to create swags for a window treatment! Learn to think outside of the box!!! Black is a wonder color to use with French Country. This painted and distressed console features a rooster and is perfect for the French Country look. A country inspired tablesetting isn't complete without a rooster! This country display features a hen and her chick. Rooster art is prevalent in home decor stores today. You should have no problem selecting the right piece for your interiors. This kitchen is one of my designs for a client and features several rooster inspired accents. This pretty chair and bouquet is eye pleasing even to the the barnyard fowl. Using fowl in landscape design. Queen of the coop! Pillows are wonderful accessories and a great way to bring a SUBTLE touch of your rooster obsession to any room. These homeowners have chosen to use roosters on their window treatments. What chicken wouldn't want to live here? I love the way they have repurposed a chest of drawers Cute bench! There are so many lovely fabrics to work with if you like this style and want to add roosters into the mix. Remember this style works best with pattern so chose a few fabrics that work well together for upholstery or window treatments. Chicken are funloving! They even inspired a dance in the 70's, the funky chicken! I have a special place in my heart for roosters. I had one as a pet who would chase us kids on our bicycles just like a dog. His name was Chester and everybody loved him.We lived in town so it was unusual to see a big white leghorn rooster roaming around the neighborhood. Sometimes he might be a block away but when you called his name, he would crow to let you know where he was. It was hilarious!! Some college aged boys on the street got him for Easter one year and a birdbath fell on him and hurt his leg. They gave him to me and I nursed him back to health but he always had a limp. He was a fun pet and provided me many good memories of growing up with an unusual sidekick. Some images that I use for my blog posts are my own, but most come from Pinterest and other similar sources. If I have an image that belongs to you, I will be glad to remove it at your request.
Believe it or not, buying a piece of land in the countryside is not a pipe dream, even if you have practically no money.
When we initially purchased our property, I had NO idea that it would turn into the crazy homesteading adventure that it has… Heck, back then I didn’t even know what the “homesteading movement” was– all I wanted was some pasture for my horses… And a compost pile. Even so, God knew exactly what we would need, as […]
