Happy Monday friends! We had our first real snow in Chicago this weekend and considering my car won't start this morning I am a teensy bit less than thrilled about it, but at least it's pretty outside. And thanks to my trusty iPhone, I can be on email for work until the hubs gets home to jump the car. In other news, I had the best weekend ever. Friends in town, a really really REALLY fun wedding, breakfast at one of our favorite spots and my favorite girly afternoon of the year - The Favorite Things Party: Beauty Edition, hosted for the 3rd year in a row by the bestie. Here's a little recap of this super fun event, which can sort of act as a guide to throw your own Favorite Things Party if you wish! First up, of course, drinks! Bridget had an assortment of wine and I brought a couple bottles of San Pellegrino, but the real hit were these two holiday drinks she made. The one in the foreground here involved cranberry juice and Prosecco, and the lighter colored one behind it had cinnamon in it. Both were delicious, and I am nominating Bridget to send me recipes for both so I can post them here! I always love going to Bridget's because she has delicious snack foods. These garlic toasts with tomato, mozzarella, basil and balsamic were not surprisingly my favorite finger food of the afternoon. Obsessed with this little cheeseboard - Another exciting snack of the day was decorated sugar cookies, which I WON (!!!) from local business Caroline's Kitchen Table! Caroline recently relaunched her business and branding, and to celebrate she hosted a giveaway for a dozen of her delicious decorated cookies, otherwise known as Sweet Caroline's. I was randomly picked as the winner by her adorable daughter, and knew that the favorite things party would be the perfect spot to showcase Caroline's cookies! Aren't they adorable?! I told Caroline about the party and she created these little tags for us, which I thought were perfect for the party theme. If you need personalized cookies for a party or hostess gift, I cannot recommend Sweet Caroline's enough. You can view pricing and further details for ordering HERE. After hours of girl talk, we finally settled in for the main event. So here's how it goes - - Each girl picks what her favorite beauty product is that costs $10. If your favorite product only costs $6, you buy another product for $4 so it still adds up to $10. If your favorite product costs $25, you try to find a mini size of it for people to try! - You buy one of your $10 product for each guest at the party. Because this can end up being a little pricey, Bridget always sends out the invite several weeks early so we can all plan for the cost, and she also keeps the guest list small so it doesn't totally break the bank. Usually, we end up with 8 or so girls, which means you spend $80 if you buy one of your products for each guest plus yourself. - Everyone takes turns telling the group about their favorite product - how to use it, where to buy it, why they love it. - As the host, Bridget always gets everyone a cute little holiday bag or bin to stash all of their goodies in, which is nice so you don't end up with a big pile of stuff to try and shove in your purse to take home! This year, I brought 2 products, since the first didn't cost quite $10. I recently discovered Jenna Hipp nail and hand cream at Costco, and admittedly bought it for the packaging. I am also obsessed with lotion and carry at least one with me everywhere I go, so these hand creams were perfect for me. After reading about Jenna Hipp - green nail stylist of the stars! - I was totally sold on this product and quickly went back to Costco to stock up for the party. The second little goodie I brought were little tiny tins (from the $1 bins at Michael's) with scoops of the rice flour "dry shampoo" I've been using obsessively. I'm telling you people - this stuff is life changing. I always think about Oprah when we're handing out the goodies - You get a lip gloss! And YOU get a lip gloss!! You get a hand cream! And YOU get a hand cream!! I also love discovering new products that I likely wouldn't typically purchase for myself. Bridget handed out a lavender undereye makeup base that I'm already hooked on - a tiny little bit of this stuff brightens tired eyes like you wouldn't believe! Other goodies this year included the perfect purpley-gray Essie polish, a fancy deodorant, a REALLY great dry shampoo (used it this morning, loved not washing my hair on a Monday!), a face moisturizer I've been wanting to try for ages, lip glosses, and a hair product that I never knew I needed but am certain I'm going to love. Best way ever to round out a weekend if I do say so myself :).

This is a wonderful tool to give your teachers or staff to learn their favorite things and make gift-giving simple!
a few weekends ago some of the women in my family got together to share out favorite things with each other, via a party! it was a really fun way to give each other gifts just because and try out some new things. how it works: -first, set a spending limit. i decided we should select our favorite thing that is $5 and we would buy four of them. so we would be spending $20 total. -spread the word. it's important to explain that they are buying four of the exact same thing. -buy your gifts and wrap them individually. that way everyone can open at the same time and the surprise isn't spoiled for everyone else. -write out the names of each person four times and put them in a bowl. for extra fun, i actually did photos instead of names. i selected photos of us from years ago, so it was fun to see the former versions of ourselves. -we opened a bottle of wine, passed the bowl around, and drew out the photos. to make sure the last person doesn't have their own photo, we drew all four selections first. that way if there was a mistake we could redraw. -we went around the circle and each person handed out their gifts to the people that drew their name. they shared why what they brought was their favorite. another way you could do it is to buy for each person that was coming. but just in case someone couldn't make it last minute, it was easier for us to set a number of gifts to buy. nannie brought thin, velvet hangers and her favorite candle // LOVE those hangers aunt rhonda brought a CUTE black makeup bag // that i think i'm actually gonna use for a clutch aunt missie brought a bottle of crown royal // such a partier :) my mom brought frozen pouches of peach daiquiri and her favorite candle // a partier like her sister my sister amber brought revlon nail polish in a gorgeous silver metallic shade my cousin callie brought purse mirrors // in one of my favorite quotes! i brought elf blush and bronzer compact and an elf makeup brush // i've gone through about 7 of these compacts personally, i ended up scoring the gifts from nannie, aunt rhonda, my mama, and my sister. it was so much fun and you learn a little bit about the person by what they choose for their favorite. we had so much fun that we decided to try to make it a monthly tradition. each person would take a turn hosting and setting the spending limit or theme. for example, you might do a summer favorite and set a $20 limit. then they could bring their favorite flip flops, sunscreen, beach bag - whatever. the opportunities are limitless! have you ever hosted a favorite things party? what theme would you choose?
This post is dedicated to your favorite things. Decorations and pictures that help to make the holiday season beautiful in your home.
About two weeks ago, I hosted a 'Favorite Things Party' at my house as a Girl's Night In. I saw this idea on pinterest and it was so cute! Here is what we did... **Fair warning- all my pictures turned out SOOOO blurry! I am so upset! So, I apologize upfront for poor picture quality. ** All the guests were told to think of their favorite thing and bring three of that favorite thing. I put a limit of $6 per item just to keep us from spending tons of money. For example, I love using big icing tips to make pretty cupcakes that look somewhat professional so I gave away icing tips, decorating bags, and sprinkles. When the guests showed up, each person wrote their name on three sheets of paper and put it in a bowl. After having time to chat and snack on our favorite appetizers that we all brought, we each took a turn explaining our favorite item. Then we drew three names from the bowl and gave away our favorite item to those lucky ladies. It was really fun to see everyone's favorite things and go away with new loot! I got awesome lip balm from Cooper Aerobics, yummy smelling candles from Bath and Body Works, and Jergen's Natural Glow tanning lotion. Quinn got a pretty wreath from my sister that is prepped for a personalized monogram. Sarah gave out pretty eye shadow. To carry said loot, I had bags ready for each person. I really wanted brown craft bags but couldn't find them at Walmart so blue was the 2nd runner up. Inside the bag I put a notepage for people to write down anything they wanted to remember for later (brand names, flavors, etc). I think it was a nice touch, but I am pretty sure only one person wrote anything down. :) As far as decorations, I put a couple food labels on the table for the favorites I had out (drink, dessert, and appetizer) and a sign I made the night before (mod podged to a scrap piece of plywood). I had grande ideas to make this all spiffy and decorated, but it just didn't happen. Like I said, we had so much fun and it was nice to try something different with friends! I have seen several variations and modifications for this party so check out pinterest for more ideas if you are going to throw one of these parties yourself. It would be so cute if you did an Oprah theme with it because I totally felt like Oprah when I was getting ready for the party! Please be a fan of lil Mop Top on facebook!! I link up to these parties!

Hi readers! When reading my June MOPS magazine, I saw this really fun idea for a favorite things party (yes the song is also going through my head--you are not alone). I decided to host it for a Mom's Afternoon Out. Here's how it works: 1. Each person will wrap and bring five of a favorite thing that costs less than $7. (think beauty product, food, journal, art supply, baking ingredient, cleaning supply. Anything goes!) 2. When you arrive at the party, you will write your name on five pieces of paper and place them in a jar. 3. Each person will pull five names from the jar, explain why they love the item, and give one to each of the five people. Here's a sample of some of our favorite things: dry shampoo gummy bears scrubber sponges and cleaner fancy dish soap Jamberry nail decals coffee mug eos lip gloss candle hand sanitizer body lotion Sounds fun right? We also played a few rounds of Heads Up on the iPad. Here are a few picks that I took.
{Invite Inspiration} My secret dream is to host a favorite things party. I saw the idea on Pinterest and have been smitten with the idea ever since. Basically, you invite a handful of girlfriends over and ask them to each bring five of their favorite things within a set price limit. Then at the party, you get to share your favorites, exchange items, and everyone goes home with a bag filled with some well-loved, picked-with-care lovely little things. Sound fun to anyone else? I thought so. The Nester has also hosted her version of a favorite things party and she shared some new favorites over on her blog today. In the spirit of favorites, Friday, and frivolous fun, here are a few of my current favorites. Paper Mate Flair Pens. Love these. My list-making / calendar-writing life has vastly improved since I started keeping a pot full of these (and these) on my desk. Because life is better lived in color. 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess. I'm reading this currently and it's eye-opening, life-changing, and my personal favorite: h-i-l-a-r-i-o-u-s. I've thought about buying a whole boatload of these books and passing them out to everyone I know. But that seems excessive. So instead, I am deeply committed to sharing this book (and my copy!) with anyone who acts borderline interested in the topic. L'Occitane Hand Cream. Dry winter hands make me bonkers. This is the hand cream dreams are made of. It's pricey but it makes your hands feel like a million bucks, so I say it's worth it. Lindor Truffles. Theresa handed me a handful of these the other day after a particularly strenuous hill run (yes, we see the irony here and we're OK with it), and I've been enjoying them ever since. My absolute favorite, always in good taste, stay-at-home mom joke is that we sit around eat and bon bons all day. Case in point: I'm eating one as I type right now. At 10am. Fiestaware Gusto Bowls. I *may* have bought myself new dishes on our 10th wedding anniversary. I choose Fiestaware (scarlet, cobalt, peacock & shamrock), and I love the sight of COLOR smiling back at me whenever I open our cupboards. These gusto bowls are particularly favorite pieces, and I think they would be a cheerful addition to anyone's kitchen. Lakeshore Candle Company Candles. This is a local (West MI) company and they make the most amazing soy candles. My absolute favorite is the Apple Cider.
