This is I-80 a few years after it replaced US-40 through the mouth of Parleys Canyon. Note the US-40 and US-40A designations for the Foothill Drive exit. US-40A ran on 2100 South between here and I-80 west of Magna. US-40 ran along Foothill Drive. The left two signs still stand. The content of those signs has been changed over the years, and they've been moved to a newer sign gantry, but they're still there. This photo is from one of 145 boxes I've been perusing at the State Archives in downtown. These photos come from the Utah Department of Transportation, and were taken mostly by Cal Briggs or Gerald E. Peterson. The photos are sorted by year (with the exception of the first several boxes), and span from 1965 to 1997. Most are black-and-white negatives, though one can find prints here and there, as well as color slides. I have to hand it to the staff over there—without them, none of these photos would be on Flickr and they'd be sitting in some box for ages. My sincerest thanks goes out to them. Characters who are standing still--especially if they're standing still just thinking--won't be doing much to move your plot forward or spice up your scenes. Here's how to fix that.
In Hawkes’ Bay, in the late 19th Century, wealthy wool barons built magnificent homesteads on vast properties. They were often designed by notable architects and used quality native timbers. Over the years, as wool prices shrank and fortunes declined, many owners sold off some of the surrounding farmland. It left the homestands still standing in parklike surroundings as monuments to a gracious and privileged lifestyle. The author Angus Gordon grew up in Clifton, one of these historic homesteads. It has stayed in his family through the generations, and they are still making a living from their land by diversifying.
An abandoned sugar mill, on the Caribbean island of Antigua. Harking back to the days of slavery on sugar plantations, this is one of 112 sugar mill towers still standing on the Caribbean island. This minimalist photography wall art print will be a stunning addition to your home decor or work space
News sites, LDS blogs, and Mormon magazines have all been keeping close tabs on Mormons still standing on American Idol. And, when the Top 24 were announced, everyone rejoiced to know thatone Mormon, Jenn Blosil, still stood in the ranks vying for the title of America's last Idol.
