Air Plant Plant Profile Air Plant (Tillandsia spp.) is a common houseplant that can be grown indoors year-round or taken outside during the warmer months. Tillandsia is in the Bromeliad family and there are more than 650 species of them. They are native to the desert and mountain regions of the Americas from Argentina up through the Caribbean and southernmost United States. Spanish Moss is a member of this family. Of course, these plants do not actually live on air, but they do not need to be planted in soil. They hang in trees where their curled leaves have adapted to take in moisture from the air and to trap rain water for use during drought periods. Air Plants need to be in bright, indirect light with good air circulation. To water them, submerge then in a bowl of room temperature water for a few minutes then drain them and place them back in their display spot. Water them weekly and mist them in-between waterings as necessary. Tillandsia: You Can Grow That! Attention Gardeners, are you looking for an air plant that will make your garden stand out? Look no further than the rubra air plant, also known as Tillandsia ionantha rubra is a beautiful air plant that belongs to the bromeliad family. This Ionantha rubra is a popular and highly sought-after variety known for its vibrant red coloration. This particular species is native to Central America, specifically Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Tillandsia ionantha rubra is a small-sized, firm-fuzzy air plant with compact rosettes that can reach up to 4 inches in diameter. The leaves are thin and narrow, and they have a striking flush red-to-orange hue, especially when exposed to bright light. The rubra air plant color intensifies during its blooming period when it produces a stunning, bright red inflorescence with purple ionantha rubra blooms and yellow tips. In terms of Ionantha care, it is relatively easy to maintain. This Tillandsia rubra is an epiphytic air plant, meaning it doesn't require soil and can grow attached to other surfaces. It thrives in bright, indirect light, making your Rubra air plant an ideal indoor plant. It is critical to maintain adequate air circulation and avoid overwatering. Instead, misting the plant 2-3 times a week or soaking it for 5 minutes in water for a short period once a week is sufficient. Additionally, the air plant rubra can flourish outdoors with proper care in USDA zones 9 to 11 and indoors in colder climates. Tillandsia ionantha rubra is a versatile and visually captivating air plant that can be displayed in various ways. It can be mounted on driftwood, placed in glass terrariums, or even incorporated into decorative arrangements. Rubra air plants can be propagated by separating the offsets, or "pups," that grow from the base of the mother plant. Tillandsia ionantha rubra is a favorite among air plant enthusiasts thanks to its stunning red color and non-toxicity to humans and pets.
