Hi everyone and welcome. It's the start of our final challenge for 2019 over at the The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog. Maggi is our host and this time the challenge is called 'It's The Holidays!' "This is such a busy time of the year that it's hard to find anytime to pursue our paper passion! With that in mind, I designed a challenge that will hopefully give you some needed crafting time, while making something useful for the holiday season that is upon us! For this challenge, create a vintage or shabby chic card, tag, gift box, bag, anything holiday related, that you can use over the holidays." As ever, the Design Team will choose their top four picks, with the winner being invited to join us in a Guest DT spot at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog and the next three will receive Top 3 Badges to display on their blogs. Everyone who enters and follows the rules will be entered into the draw to have the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. For my DT project I wanted to create a Pocket Notebook to hold all those important holiday lists and menus. There's so much to keep track of at this time of year and with lots of pages inside it's going to be able to be used for several years to come. This one is relatively plain and simple in comparison to previous notebooks - time is short after all at this time of year! Die cut Pocket Notebook covers were bound at the spine with tape (as I've shown in previous blog posts) and covered in book page (on the spine) and cream coloured muslin. On tea stained copier paper I stamped the largest of the images from the Tim Holtz Yuletide Gatherings set using Hickory Smoke Distress Archival Ink from the #3 Kit. A couple of the smaller sprigs from the same set were added to extend the pattern over the page. You may spot on the spine a thinner strip that was stamped in the same way with the images from Tim's Stitches set, and all the paper sections were inked at the edges with the Vintage Photo Archival Ink from the set mentioned above. With the paper stamped it was glued in place over the muslin and book page sections. Matte Distress Collage Medium is perfect for this job, and I like to apply a layer of Dina Wakley Media Clear Gesso over the top to protect the surface of the paper. At the bottom of the front page you'll see I've added stamped words; another option is to use one of the Tim Holtz Idea-ology Christmas Quote Chips here as it would coordinate perfectly with the jute string tied to the spine. Also included with the jute string are a bunch of gorgeous silver tone holiday themed charms, attached using jump rings and all available from Linda's store (links below). After binding the book with tea stained pages I set about adding the robin to the front; using the Tim Holtz 'Patchwork Bird' Die set it's easy to cut the different sections required from oddments of fabric, though as a suggestion it's easier if you add paper or card to the reverse to get a clean cut with thinner fabrics. The edges of each piece were inked with the Vintage Photo Distress Archival Ink and I hand-stitched through some sections with metallic embroidery thread (floss) before sticking it onto the front cover. That's my take on the theme 'It's The Holidays!' for the current The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog challenge. My fantastic team mates have created the most amazing festive projects for this challenge so make sure you hop on over and check them out HERE. And remember to link up your own Holiday shabby chic or vintage projects to be in with a chance of winning one of the fabulous prizes that's up for grabs. Hello and welcome! We really enjoyed seeing all those gorgeous embellishments, trinkets and trims in our last challenge! It's Sara Emily here to host our latest challenge at Frilly and Funkie, and I'm calling it 'Home, Sweet Home'. Whether your house is grand or modest, neat or messy, there's no place like home. Houses get bought and sold, but home stays with you forever. For this challenge, I would like to see how you interpret what home means to you on your vintage or shabby chic project. The winner will earn the chance of a Guest Designer spot here at Frilly and Funkie, and everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. And there are Top 3 Badges for three further outstanding entries, chosen by the Design Team, because choosing just one winner is so hard! The guidelines for entering are simple; create a new vintage or shabby chic project following the challenge theme, link it below to your post (not just your blog) and also include a link back to this challenge in your post. You can combine our challenge with up to 10 challenges (including this one) to be in with a chance of winning. If you are entering through a public forum (such as Instagram) you'll need to include the words Frilly and Funkie Challenge. Also, please be sure to turn off your Word Verification so our Design Team can leave comments on your blogs. Make sure you follow these rules as unfortunately, we have had to eliminate entrants from the prize draws in the past. Pictures from Tim's Patchwork Pandemonium class can be seen in this post. Here is my finished project, which I actually was able to FINISH...
This rustic bird is perfect for sewing fanatics! The Patchwork Bird by Tim Holtz contains various elements to create a dimensional bird using a multitude of materials. With the steel-ruled die, you can use this bird for all kinds of makes, including papercrafts, home décor and sewing! With steel-rule construction, a Bigz die cleanly cuts thick materials, including cardstock, chipboard, fabric, foam, magnet, leather, metallic foil, paper and sandpaper (in limited use). Its wider size offers you more design options. This die is designed for use only with the BIGkick, Big Shot and Vagabond machines and requires the use of a pair of Cutting Pads.
"The Power of Powder" is this week's Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge theme, so I incorporated some embossing powder and some Infusions powder to make these two tags: I started with some plain white tags cut with Tim Holtz's Sizzix Tags die set. I glued some Simon Says Stamp dictionary paper scraps to each tag. Next I stamped some circles on the background using Ranger Jet Black Archival ink and Tim Holtz's Halftones and Rings stamp set. I stamped and embossed some hexagons from Tim's Patchwork Pieces stamp set, which I cut out and experimentally arranged on my tags. When I had a rough idea of where the shapes would be, I took off the hexagons, then sprinkled on some Infusions powder and spritzed it with some water. I colored my hexagon pattern pieces and glued them on top of the tags, but everything started to look too chaotic and nutso. These tags were hovering mere inches from the garbage can! But whenever I feel like a project is starting to look too crazy-town, I give the project one last chance for salvation by slapping on a coat of heavy white acrylic paint. That's what I did to both tags, leaving some of the color exposed and adding a few colors back in with Distress Ink smudges. Then I started layering on other elements, like this edge from a plain old notebook. The plaid Circle-X on the bigger tag is from Seth Apter's Drip Drop die set, which I am quite in love with. The stars on this smaller tag are from Neat and Tangled (Seeing Stars). The string at the top of the tags are a few strands of embroidery floss that I pulled and scrunched up. All in all, I was glad these tags came together in the end. Hi fellow crafters! I can't believe how fast Christmas is approaching, and as usual, I'm so behind in everything. Still some decorating to get done, cards to make, and the list goes on. So if any of you are like me and still busy creating for the holidays, here's some inspiration! This is a project I created for Sizzix's Tim Holtz Chapter 4 Facebook release using the Patchwork Bird and wool fabric. The bird perches on a spool I made using a piece of a cardboard tube, and the Mini Tree Rings die and embossing folder set. Here's a short tutorial: After selecting the wool pieces I wanted to use, I used Heat'n Bond Iron on Adhesive paper to the back of the fabric pieces. There are different kinds of this adhesive, two sided, one sided, light weight, etc. I had a two-sided light weight that I used which can be found at a craft or fabric store. This adhesive not only makes it easier to stitch on top of your pieces, it also stops your fabric from fraying. Also keep in mind, that you want to keep your fabric on the thinner side, so it will still die-cut with the Thinlits. You might have to scissor cut it in a few places. When ironing the two-sided adhesive onto your fabric, leave one side of the paper backing on, iron the side with the exposed adhesive to your fabric. Remove the remaining backing and iron your tail pieces onto the bird body die-cut. Do the same for the feet. I hand stitched around the edges of the pieces after they were adhered to the upper body die-cut and through the middle of the tail feathers. Adhere the body with the pieces to the main bird die-cut. I left the top of the bird chest, head and beak unstitched because I wasn't sure what I was going to do when stuffing it. You can hand stitch this area now, except for the beak, which I left. This is what your bird looks like so far. I used 2 pieces of thin craft wire, twisted together halfway. This wire supports the bird, so it stands upright. Glue the wire to the bird body and feet, leaving some wire sticking out past the feet. It's a bit tricky on the feet, there's not much room, so you can't use a lot of glue. I die-cut another bird body and glued it on top of the bird back around the edges, except a small opening underneath the head. I used a small amount of hot glue for this. I stuffed the bird to give it more dimension, but you could leave it flat. You will only need a very small amount of filling, then stitch your opening closed. I finished off with the hand stitching around the chest and head at this point (not through the very back body layer)but you will have already done this step. To finish off the back edge, I hand stitched in matching thread all the way around and secured the feet fabric around the wire. You will be poking the wire from the bottom of the feet through your tree ring. For my 'spool', I die-cut two of the smaller Mini Tree Rings from chipboard and two from Tim Holtz Mixed Media Cardstock. Emboss the two pieces of Mixed Media cardstock rings. The paper roll was cut 2 1/4" long and the roll was about 1" or slightly more in diameter. Cover this with patterned paper (I used Tim Holtz Christmas paper). I coloured my tree rings, first with spraying with Antique Linen Distress Oxide Spray, then inking with Distress Oxide Ground Espresso ink and finally highlighting the edges and raised areas with Distress Walnut Stain ink. Adhere the embossed coloured rings to the chipboard rings. Poke two holes in the one ring that will be used for the top of the spool. This is for the wire. Poke the wire through and hot glue the the wire to the underside of the ring. Glue your bottom tree ring to the bottom of the spool. For the leaves, I die-cut different shades of green fabric from the leaf in the Deck the Halls Colorize Set. I did use a heat 'n bond adhesive (one-sided adhesive) to stop the fabric fraying, on some of them (mostly the ones that were not wrapped around the spool). Machine stitch all your leaves in a garland, with the ends touching. I continued sewing after I ran out of leaves for a little bit, so you have a thread that looks woven. Leave the first leaf loose, then wrap and adhere the chain of leaves until you get near the end. I had a total of 15 leaves in my chain. Leave two to come up to the bird. The thread piece that looks woven goes in-between the bird beak back and green front piece. Adhere this to the beak. To finish off my bird, I die-cut some green foliage from the Sizzix Large Funky Festive Thinlits set and green Tim Holtz Metallic Cardstock. This, and spanish moss, were adhered to the spool top around the birds feet. Also, two wool fabric leaves with alcohol inked red Beaded Berries(TH93779) were adhered slightly behind the bird. A green fabric bow from the Deck the Halls Colorize set and a Tiny Bell (TH93744) tied on, complete this project. Hope you enjoyed this tutorial, I still have a few more projects to share! Hopefully I can get them done before Christmas! Thanks for stopping by, Jan

A Tim Holtz class that I took in the past and recently finished. If you'd like to learn his techniques, you can find them in his books "A Compendium of Curiosities" Volume I & II. If he is ever in your area, I recommend taking at least one of his classes, if you can.. Enjoy my story... Lisa Pavelka micro gears. Mod Podge was used as a sealer. Grunge board and grunge paper used as well as some Spare Parts, Industrial Chic I just love it all! Lots of Tim Holtz of course. What fun!! Tissue tape inked up. Lots of Idea-ology candy... how yummy! This "Time" piece is one of my favorites. The dry embossing on this was nice and crisp, I just love the look.

I fell hard for this Eclectic Elements fabric collection by renowned paper crafter, Tim Holtz. Tim is the Creative Director for Ranger Industries and all you have to do is go down an aisle at a Michael's or JoAnn's and see walls of his wonderful product creations. This is his first fabric collection, and it comprises of 3 design categories: Documentation, Labels, & Melange. In order to retain all the good scrapbook/grunge/steampunk vibe - I used my trusty pattern: Easy Bake from Cluck Cluck Sew. It was not easy to find the entire collection (24 fat quarters total) and I wanted to use every bit of it. After making the bulk of the quilt - I measured the remaining fabric and found that 4" square gave me the most pieces. These squares were put on the front sides and back. My first time making a quilt with a cotton top, traditional batting & a cotton back - (used Warm and Natural batting / pre-washed and dried before quilting). The back is Michael Miller's couture cotton in Nite - which comes in 85 colors - and has a wonderful soft drape - (while it looks rather bright in the pictures, it blends well overall - another option could be the Midnight Blue which is darker). Quilted top and bottom with Aurifil 50 wt. ( light sand #2000 & dark cobalt #2740). Spray basted (and ironed to fuse them even more), I had a few hiccups (and 3 rows to rip out) as the bottom tension went all wonky - but a few turns on the bottom bobbin case screw worked fine. Each time I re-loaded the bobbin - I had to make minor adjustments. April 2014 Size: 60 x 72"
Flying geese blocks, combined with the fabric’s vintage motifs, give our beautiful quilt its name. The variety is a quilter's dream. You can isolate and piece together all the interesting bits into a wonderful collage.
