Starting off 2024 with something quick and easy but very impactful. I found this whole set on FB Marketplace for FREE. With just a little TLC, I was able to spruce this thang up and get it right back...
*** NOTE TO READERS: At the time this blog was written Annie Sloan had not yet released her Decoupage medium in the U.S. Since that is now available, I would use Annie's Decoupage rather than another brand to adhere the fabric to the chest. Also Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® is now copyright rather than a trademark! 1/4/2015 The customer is always right, we shopkeepers know! So I needed to find a way to incorporate toile fabric into a dresser she had her eye on and wanted done a special way. The client supplied the fabric. Here's how it turned out! Painting the dresser was a breeze, using Chalk Paint(TM) decorative paint by Annie Sloan. This is Napoleonic Blue which is a rich blue -- not quite navy, not quite royal -- with clear wax. There was an old brown finish on the dresser, which if you are familiar with Chalk Paint, did not need to be removed or even sanded. I prepped the piece by simply washing it down with dishwashing soap and water, rinsed and dried. I cut rectangles of the toile fabric slightly larger than the drawers, emphasizing the various vignettes in the fabric. I then applied Modge Podge generously to a drawer front, positioned the fabric over it and carefully applied pressure with my hand to make sure it fit firmly across the surface. Once dry, I trimmed the fabric to be even with the drawer edges with an exacto knife. The final step was to protect the fabric from raveling and from dirt. I shook up my liter container of Lacquer -- ie floor varnish -- that is another terrific Annie Sloan product and applied a generous coat to each drawer front. When dry it also gave just a tad of sheen to the fabric and it looked terrific! I can't wait for the customer to come in and see the final piece. She better come soon or I may just take this home to my guest room!

It's incredible how much that inlay catches the eye after he polished it up. It's beautiful. 😍
At TLC Vintage Collection in Des Moines, Iowa, we are often asked when we know to paint a newly acquired piece or leave it well enough alone. Our rule is to never decrease the value of something that is perfect the way it is. We only paint pieces that do not have some intrinsic value on its own. Many older pieces are decrepit or just not that valuable as they stand. TLC Vintage searches for pieces doomed for the landfill or that are so beat up that paint is the best answer. But we cannot always resist a wonderful piece that is beautiful in its own right and is wonderfully priced and just needs a simple repair to be placed in a home where it will be reloved. Oh, yes -- she has scars and stains. She was wobbly because the little sliders had been broken off her front legs, and the wood worn down up to an inch on the right side (see the little white stuff at the bottom right foot that we haven't repainted yet?) But with a product we carry exclusively here in Central Iowa -- Wood Icing -- we were able to gradually rebuild that right foot to stabilize her -- and to have the same contours and shape of the original leg! Thin layer after thin layer of textura paste, lightly sanded to even it up. Painted to match the original, it will be hard to see the patch! What do we love? Better to ask what not to love? This little green vanity has beautiful flowers and a stool -- not the same style -- that has been married to her lovingly with a needlepoint flowered seat. A match? No, but a charm of its own that says, I'm with her! And yes, those brighter green stains? A sign that someone left some oily cosmetic container sitting too long, and possibly a coffee or tea cup off to the lower right side, when the mistress of the house was getting ready for her day or primping to go out for an evening on the town! Every piece has a story for you to imagine. And the original little wood dividers, carefully crafted with their scalloped edges -- ready for little pots of rouge, a lipstick, and whatever ladies liked to tidy away a century ago. That center area probably held a wonderful matching hand mirror, brush and comb. And that mirror! Beveled and cut to perfection -- dimmed a little with time. But perfectly curved to add interest. For there is truly not any other reason than esthetics not to have just placed a square mirror there. And when once ready for the day or evening, everything could be tidied away into their compartments -- the beautiful lid closed. A perfect place to write a thank you note or a love letter or to record in a journal the happenings of the day or night. Sometimes we just have to love a piece for its history, the story it shows us, the posterity we have to preserve by leaving well enough alone!

This week I hope to redeem myself as a blogger by posting not one, but two reveals! Today, I will share the dumpster desk, and Thursday, you'll get the first look at the finished feature wall, which is the result of a surprise collaboration. I cannot wait to tell you all about it.
Here we are at Central Iowa Headquarters for Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan -- TLC -Vintage Collection! Today we are doing a step-by-step tutorial on a Faux Copper Patina that was chosen by our Facebook followers for this neat Asian-inspired chest. First, most pieces are easily cleaned up for painting by using dish soap and water, then rinse and dry! Really dirty pieces, use TSP and then rinse well and dry! First coat -- don't expect total coverage. Like Annie Sloan says, just slap it on so you can get onto the interesting bits! Depending on how you want the finished piece to look decide if you will go with the grain or not. I paint the backs of my pieces as you never know what people will look at and here in the shop, all sides are exposed usually. I am careful with older pieces or quality pieces to leave the manufacturer and shipping labels legible -- just paint around them. Decide what you will do with the pulls and hinges. In this case, I did not remove them as the whole thing should look like a metallic, patina finish when we are done! Sorry, the lighting makes this look like Duck Egg on the close up -- but it is actually Florence! I have just done a coat of clear wax after two coats of paint all over! This project could be finished completely by now, but we do have customers coming in to talk and discuss their next projects....Now for some of the especially fun bits! Applying some Copper Gilding Wax and it takes very little! We carry seven colors of gilding wax: 3 golds, silver, pewter, brass and now copper! Applied copper gilding wax with finger. Sorry for the delay in finishing this post. We had internet issues yesterday. But here i the final after dark waxing! And we added a surprise pop of Emperor's Silk to the drawers and interior!

Need help, reader pals! I want you to comment and tell me which color combo you would choose for my next big project which begins this afternoon! Here are the color combos I am considering, then read on for what the project is! This is a Coco and Louis Blue (with Coco wash over it) done by Annie Sloan Chalk Paint stockist Michelle Delgado. Talented, isn't she? So this is one of the choices. We will call it, as she did: Coco loves Louis! This is a photo from Annie Sloan's own blog, talking about the origin of her Scandanavian Pink color. This, I believe is Graphite and Scandanavian Pink. Call this one In the Pink! Last but not least, Kathy Smith -- another stockist with Annie Sloan -- did this bed with Paris Grey under Old White then distressed with water and a scrubby! Very cool, isn't it? Call this one Shabby Chic! Your job, gentle readers, is to vote by this afternoon on one of the above color combos for a matching bedset that I am tackling! Sorry, no before photo yet, but say it is a 1930s dresser with mirror, separate bureau and a head/footboard set that is not a true match but close enough -- especially once it is painted! I really need help on this so please tell me what you think would not only be beautiful but sell best. Remember, this IS a business. So leave a comment and help me out! Thanks!
