Tobias Brandywine, 1940's era hardcover novel written by Dan Wickenden. Copyright 1948; 366 pages. Measures 8" x 5.25". Excerpt from the book jacket: "In one sense, Tobias Brandywine never actually existed at all. It was just a name they gave to the mysterious, half-starved stranger who suddenly appeared late one wintry afternoon at the back door of Senator Windrow's mansion in the small midwestern town of Wanhope. But the stranger stayed on, and even if they didn't know who he really was, there wasn't a member of the Windrow family, from teen-age Gladys to over-age Emmy, whose life was not in some way redirected, brightened, given new meaning by his unobtrusive presence. So, in many ways that matter, Tobias Brandywine certainly did exist, and the story of this wise, gentle stranger and of the family whose troubled circle he entered is as delightful, moving, and memorable a story as one could hope to find in many a day. What's more, it's a story that every member of the family will enjoy, for there's suspense, drama, and above all, a warm, engaging, and amazingly perceptive understanding of the varied longings and fears, the varied joys and hopes of three generations." The book itself is in good condition, with just some wear to the hardcovers, wear to the richly colored illustration on the front inside covers and first page of the book, writing on the first blank page, a few tiny stains on the right side of a few of the pages and the side of the text block, hardcover spine is slightly separated from the text block, text block is not as tight between some of the pages as it is elsewhere, but there are no loose or missing pages. Dust jacket is barely alive (see last 2 pictures)! It is in 3 pieces, so does not fit by itself over the book. It still retains the fantastically spooky illustration of the mansion, though, granted with a lot of wear!! This item will be shipped via USPS Media Mail.
