"I've been looking for a savior in these dirty streets Looking for a savior beneath these dirty sheets I've been raising up my hands, drive another nail in Got enough guilt to start my own religion Why do we crucify ourselves? Every day I crucify myself And nothing I do is good enough for you Crucify myself" Tori Amos has always been the kind of woman that leaves a lasting impression. Her song "Crucify" was the breakout song from Tori's Little Earthquakes album back in 1992 and it also served as a bit of a calling card. In a sea of grunge bands and flannel, this redhead armed with a unique voice and piano really stood out. She became the alternative to what we already had established as, alternative music. Over the years Amos has always remained true to the style that brought her to our attention in the first place. I remember "Crucify" being played like crazy on college radio and wondering if everyone would ever catch on to how great of an artist Tori was. Then one Saturday morning after an episode of Dance Party USA a teen interview show featured a whole segment on her. I don't remember details of the interview but it made me like her even more. Check out the video that kicked off Tori's career below!
I was a huge fan from day one. She was promoting Little Earthquakes. We had a nice little acquaintancey-friend kinda thing going on. For years I was the guy who introduced her at all of her Baltimore MD and Washington D.C. shows, giving me the chance to see her play live a LOT in the early days. She recorded a lot of funny messages and odd little grunts and sayings for me to play on the air around the era of the first three albums. We had Tori Amos themed contests. I remember one she dreamt up while we were just hanging out backstage... Learn to Play the Piano with Tori Amos and Johnny Riggs. I'm pretty sure I talked about this somewhere else, but I'm remembering things and I'm on a roll, so I can erase later. Another contest involved a WHFS radio listener going out to eat with me, Bob Waugh, Tori, etc. at a D.C. restaurant called Red Sage. (She had the flan). I promoted her as the grrrrrl I had the biggest crush on, and it worked well for both of us. She would come to town, visit the station, play some songs while I sat drooling beside her, and I'd talk about her constantly on the air, heavily promote her shows and her music, and introduce her at almost every local appearance for years. If anyone who used to listen to me on the radio from about 1992-2000 paid attention, this might spark some kind of memories. If you heard any of the above fun on the air, write and say hi. I'd love to hear from you. I didn't have my closeup lens at this point, so my "i'm getting right in your face" thing wasn't happening yet. Every time she visited, she'd play some songs live in the studio, alone on a little keyboard (see my other pictures). I have copies of all of that rare stuff, as well as lots of other photos, video, super rare CDs, records, ticket stubs, memorabilia... How about when I die, I'll will it to you, Tori fan? You know, I used to have a couple of those Tori Amos cereal boxes. I remember selling a couple on eBay in the mid 90s. I hope I didn't sell them all. Crap. Oh well. Anyway, here's a photo of Tori that is 17 years old! I haven't seen her in a handful of years, but she's such a nice person that anytime I see someone who knows both of us, they always say that she asks about me. That's the sign of a nice person. The difference between someone who likes you on the air, but doesn't give a tinker's in real life. Thanks, Ms. Amos, for giving me a lot of very enjoyable memories, writing some of the most brilliant music of my time on the air (before it all became Limp Bizkit and Creed), and for singing the Bitch Boy song (which I'm sure you can't possibly remember) about me, which I used to play on the air a LOT.
