The weight of a kids bikes matters SO MUCH! I cannot emphasize this enough. Putting little kids on heavy bikes is just a recipe for disaster. Lightweight mountain bikes make climbing easier, descending smoother, and generally just make mountain biking with kids BETTER!

We decided to keep some of the Lightfoot reviews around, though, to remember these awesome pieces of engineering, and we created this site to review other top brands that are still on the market. The Transporter cargo-carrying, all-season cycle Designed to be used by families, farms, institutions, resorts and delivery businesses. The Transporter recumbent cargo trike is our oldest three-wheel model and has proven over the years to be very useful, efficient and durable. It is designed for carrying lots of cargo in its pickup-style box and oversize objects on its wide-platform fenders. It is suitable for many uses and most persons due to its stability, moderate weight and easy handling. The Transporter is designed for safety, comfort and capability. The Transporter is built of light and strong aircraft-grade chromoly steel, and is engineered for stability. When empty of cargo, it is surprisingly quick, perhaps 80% as fast as a mountain bike on level terrain. The Transporter can travel safely on ice or snow. On steep hills it maintains a perfectly straight line even at very slow speeds. It has a very wide range of gears, including compound-low for climbing steep hills and carrying heavy loads. The Transporter has gears, traction and all-wheel brakes for capable and safe operation. Comparative industrial and commercial benefits of Lightfoot utility cargo cycles are listed here. Power assist is available for the Transporter. “GOBA is a 7 day tour of Ohio. I rode the Transporter trike, with my 8 yr old, 65 lb. daughter in the back. I am happy to report that the trike’s performance was excellent. “ – Ed E., OH The Transporter has 6.5 cubic feet of cargo space within its cargo box. It can carry oversize cargo on its Wide Platform Fenders. The general-duty Transporter is more lightly built than Lightfoot’s heavy-duty upright industrial tricycles, and is therefore faster and, with its extremely comfortable recumbent seat, is more appropriate for riders who spend a lot of time in the saddle and need to cover a lot of miles. The Transporter can be ridden comfortably for hours and many miles. The Transporter will haul one or two infant/toddler car seats. For carrying small children, and for delivery work, we have designed an all-weather topper. The topper is available custom-made, and is fabricated of riveted aluminum and ABS plastic. Optionally it can be provided with Lexan windows. The recumbent Transporter is not only more efficient, but also much more stable than most upright cargo trikes. The side panels of the the cargo box are made of ABS plastic, a tough, non-toxic, recyclable material. Wide Platform Fender tops and the cargo floor are made of aluminum ‘diamond plate’. Custom fender enclosure panels of ABS are available which conceal the top half of the wheel and provide a more finished look; these also provide a block of space for advertising. Wheel disks of lighter ABS are also available, and by concealing the spokes, further help change the look of the cycle from ‘bicycle’ to ‘vehicle’. “The (Lightfoot Transporter) is probably the favorite of all the bikes. It carries six plastic bins in its carts, which are used to transport recyclables.” – Associated Students Recycling Program, UCSB The Transporter as a recycling vehicle. Lightfoot builds custom trailers to expand the Transporter's capacity. The Transporter can haul several types and sizes of containers. The standard size Transporter fits drivers from 5′ up to 6’6″. The long frame and large wheels are well suited to rough roads, gravel or even fields. The Transporter can also be pulled like a garden cart by its front wheel. For farm use, even large 3″ downhill-style knobby tires can be accommodated. The Transporter features flat fenders over the rear wheels that create a wide platform. The platform has proven to be highly useful in many ways; providing support and bearing surface for wide loads like furniture and hay bales, and stabilizing long pieces that fit alongside the driver, such as lumber. Dedicated side-racks can be custom fitted over these fender platforms to hold ladders, pipe and lumber. Though it must be done with care and caution, kids love to ride in the back and sit on the fender platforms. A lockable lid is optionally available. This lid lies flat and almost flush with the wide platform fenders, thus providing a flat platform for carrying extra cargo outside of and on top of the main cargo space. “(T)hank you so very much for a beautiful trike. Everybody loves it!” – S. H., CA The STANDARD HANDLEBAR swings wide on sharp turns (tiller effect). The tiller bar works great for most persons. However, if you are getting a trike because you need balance support in addition to stability, order the LINKAGE STEERING option. Linkage steering replaces the wide-swinging standard handlebar with an almost straight handlebar that pivots around a single point, allowing you to support your weight on the bar without affecting the steering direction. The long-wheelbase recumbent Transporter accommodates the Super Zzipper front fairing. The front fairing is good for keeping some rain off of the legs and cold air off of the torso of cold-season riders. It also provides some aerodynamic improvement, helping you go a tiny bit faster; an advantage that is noticeable and especially appreciated in headwinds. “I LOVE MY TRIKE! I’m enjoying it immensely; it’s great winter transportation. I moved 1200 lbs of bricks and a pile of lumber with it. I even used it to bring home a 6ft Christmas tree from the farmer’s market.” – Barry D., Ontario, Canada Just married. The Transporter will stand on its wheels on top of almost any automobile, fits in the back of small pickups, and fits inside mid- and large-size vans without their rear seats. Single-wheel-drive is standard. Trikes, with their three-point stance, almost always have good traction on the driving wheel. Studded rear tires are available for winter use, and are usually adequate for traction and braking even in icy conditions. People regularly encountering hills with ice or deep gravel or unpaved roads with deep mud may order our 2-wheel drive option. We do not use a differential on any of our recumbent trikes. Our jackshaft transmission system has a number of advantages. The jackshaft allows us to have all-wheel braking and compound gearing. Not having a differential permits the use of standard mountain bike wheels, and gives the rider the ability to easily and quickly change or remove wheels and tires. The Lightfoot transmission can be modified for two-wheel-drive, and this is a true positive-traction drive, which not even a limited-slip differential can match for traction. Not having a differential opens up all the space between the rear wheels, creating a very large cargo zone. As those who put time into riding this cycle know, a differential simply isn’t necessary. With single-wheel drive, turning sharply to the right has the effect of “gearing down” the cycle. Turning sharply to the left puts the drive wheel to the inside of the turning radius and “gears up” the trike; you sometimes may need to down-shift for slow, sharp turns to the left. The Transporter has very wide range gearing. Gears are shifted just like a 24 speed mountain bike. A separate shifter allows you also to choose 8 “ranges”, from super-low to high. To simplify shifting, the range shifter can be set to a single gear. The very powerful lowest gear is 9 gear-inches (by contrast, mostmountain bikes have a low gear of approximately 22 to 24 gear-inches) for easy climbing of hills or pulling of heavy loads. The highest and fastest gear is 120 gear-inches (mountain bikes typically have a 90-100 gear-inch top). The power-transfer jackshaft is 3/4″ 4130-chromoly steel, with threaded mounting for standard freewheels. Jackshaft bearings are sealed flange bearings; easily removed and replaced if necessary, with no need for special tools. NOTE: The jackshaft is very simple and sturdy, and uses ordinary bike components to achieve compound gearing, easy power-assist integration, the option of two-wheel drive, and other features. To achieve these valuable options, we have accepted that the jackshaft as configured will not be sealed and therefore will require maintenance. You must maintain the jackshaft; checking the bolts (that hold the freewheel mounts) regularly to ensure that they remain tight, and greasing the freewheel mounts regularly so that they remain free of rust. If your use of the cycle is limited to sunny days on pavement; lube the freewheel mounts once a year (a 10 minute task). If you use it hard in any weather, lube it at least once every two or three months. If you use it in a salt air environment, clean and lube it at least once a month. An optional internal-gear hub can be used for the drive wheel. This greatly reduces stuck-in-a-high-gear situations, and makes shifting simpler for the novice rider. Both Shimano and SRAM offer a 7-speed hub with good range and intervals. Neither of these offer a disk brake, and brake bosses and vee-brakes must be added. Smooth roads, flat terrain and moderate speeds allow hauling more weight. A custom upgrade can be made to the Schwalbe Big Apple tire, which has even more volume and a higher profile for more pneumatic shock absorption when heavily loaded. The easy-rolling Big Apple also features reflective side stripes and Kevlar belting for flat resistance. Wheels are standard BMX diameter 20″ (406 mm BSD) in front, and standard mountain bike diameter 26″ (590 mm BSD) in rear. Rims are alloy, for lighter rotating mass with good lateral strength. All-wheel braking is standard. Avid 7 mechanical cable-actuated disk brakes are standard. Disk brakes are very powerful, and brake the wheel effectively, even in wet conditions. Disk brakes help preserve the wheel rim walls, which “V” brakes grind away at in sandy, gritty conditions. They also do not heat up the rim on long, steep descents; rims heated by v-brakes can lead to tire blowouts. With cable-actuated brakes, maintenance parts are commonly available at bike shops, and the cable-actuated brakes are much more easily repaired in the field or in far countries than are hydraulic systems.
