Peaceful yet engaging. All you need is a place to sleep. Sure, a tent might do but if you own a patch of land, why not put a cabin on it?
I don't know about you guys, but my treehouse as a kid was a couple of boards nailed to a probably dead and stunted tree in the backyard-- not exactly my dream fort, but whatever. I used my imagination. But, now that I'm an awesome adult, I've discovered a treehouse so cool, my 8-year-old mind couldn't have even thought of it, let alone build it-- the Free Spirit Spheres near Canada's Qualicum Bay. Not only are they fully equipped to be totally cozy, but they're also suspended 15 feet in the forest canopy. They're designed and built by one man to help encourage "a state of blissful awareness of an existence outside of the physical body"...also, they're just plain awesome. There are three "spirit spheres" to rent, each with a different layout and vibe. The first built is known as Eve-- she's 9 feet in diameter, and comfortably sleeps one person looking to get in touch with nature on the cozy single bed-- and there are 2 windows that look right out into the forest. Then there's Eryn, who sleeps three in a double bed plus a loft. The final spirit sphere is named Melody. Melody has a Murphy bed that can fit a cozy couple, and has more desk space-- perfect for artists looking to work in a unqiue and inspiring environment. The newest addition is Gwynn, the "reception sphere", where guests are greeted and checked in. While the height on all of them can be adjusted, from resting on the ground to 30 feet or more into the air, they usually hang out around 15 or so feet off the forest floor. Because they're suspended by vertical cables, they sway gently when strong breezes blow through the branches and when people in the sphere move-- but don't worry, they don't move enough to be unsettling. Most are reached by a spiral staircase, making it easy for you to get your luggage up to the spheres. You don't want to take too much stuff, though...you don't want to distract yourself too much from the fact that you're spending the night in a tree sphere! -Roadtrippers Welcome to the world of Free Spirit Spheres, set among the tall trees of the west coast rainforest of Vancouver Island, Canada. We invite you to experience a tree house for adults... 16 years and over. (liability considerations) We are open 12 months of the year; each season providing something unique. Built on vision and engineering these handcrafted spheres are suspended like pendants from a web of rope. They occupy a truly unique place in the world while providing a habitat for the un-tamed spirit that exists in us all. Spheres, Eve, Eryn and Melody, are available for overnight rental. We are approximately 30km north of Parksville on Vancouver Island along the Inland Island Hwy (#19), near Qualicum Bay. The acreage is on private property close to Horne Lake Caves, Georgia Strait and Mount Washington. Come experience an enchanted coastal rain forest.... your comfortable, gently swaying, restful sphere awaits. The "Spherical Tree House" concept borrows heavily from sailboat construction and rigging practice. It's a marriage of tree house and sailboat technology. Wooden spheres are built much like a cedar strip canoe or kayak. Suspension points are similar to the chain plate attachments on a sailboat. Stairways hang from a tree much like a sailboat shroud hangs from the mast. Spherical architecture has many unconventional features. Conventional buildings separate walls, ceiling and floor with hard lines. In a sphere the walls and ceiling merge into one. The function changes but the form remains the same. It is a unified structure with one continuous wall. I call this uniwall construction. There are only 2 sides to a sphere, inside and outside.
