I am an absolute fan of the work of Michael Trapp, decorator and landscape designer, able to transform your plot into a garden straight out of Pompeii. His masterpiece is his own garden. I did some posts about it here and here. Here is a revisit, thanks to a splendid serie of photographs by Karl Gercens.

The past three weeks could not have crawled by more slowly if they tried! Naomi from one of my favourite blogs Coulda Shoulda Woulda spoke this week about the Mercury Retrograde. I'm blaming the two week break-down of our wifi, Pneumonia and Shingles that was circulating in this household, entirely on this Retrograde!.. I mean - what other explanation could there possibly be. My poor little grand-daughters have been constantly sick as well. At last it feels (I hope) that things are slowly improving! So, while I wasn't lying on the sofa feeling sorry for myself, I spent some hours on the computer doing 'house-stuff'! The joinery drawings went off to be priced two weeks ago and I thought I'd show you a couple of the kitchen drawings and my choices. It's such a coincidence that Heidi from Adelaide Villa is at a similar stage of her building as I am. I am full of admiration of her skills as an architect//project manager and full time Mum to three little children. Please go over to her blog and look at her kitchen choices as they are really beautiful - I especially love her choice of steel windows and the simplicity of her joinery. I was inspired by lots and lots of kitchens .. and in particular... Anyway - here are a couple of pics of my kitchen joinery. As yet, I am not sure whether the finish will be 2pac or hand-painted. It depends which price is more attractive! Unfortunately, I don't have all of the elements together in one picture so fingers crossed it will look OK when it all goes in! I will probably use Hogg's Bristle half strength as the colour on the doors. I am still undecided about what to use for the bench tops...Probably Caesar Stone... or Stainless or both? As you can see, it is a very traditional design Not much glamour - hopefully functional, warm and inviting! I have a lovely collection of old copper pots and Majolica which will be displayed. I will also have terracotta pots with indoor plants on the deep window sill alongside the sink. This kitchen tap from Perrin & Rowe at the sink. I have posted this pic to show the subway tiles as a splash back. This fitting above the Island - in chrome and clear ribbed glass shades. I will be using a grey grouting Polished Nickel door knobs Polished nickel drawer pulls These oak floors throughout the Butlers pantry, kitchen and Breakfast/living The Butlers pantry and kitchen The East elevation of the kitchen. The windows above the sink(not shown) are bi-fold. The door on the left through to rest of the house is glass with glass side-lights The view into the pantry from the kitchen. The half-glass door through to the dining room. Bottom right is a wine fridge, and bottom left of the door is a drawer dishwasher. The dishwasher to the right of the sink will unpack mostly into the eastern side of the island. The above shows the layout. The tiles shown in the pantry are incorrect...we are using timber flooring. I have also been dreaming about the garden.. probably as I've been inspired by Faux Fuchsia blog and her recent visit to many beautiful gardens in the UK. In a way, planning a smaller garden is more difficult as there is nowhere to hide .. ie - every square metre will be have to be planned out. There is a level change in the back garden, and we are planning a knee-high basalt stone wall with stone steps up to the higher level. The pool is situated on the higher level. I am using a timber pool fence which will weather grey and will compliment all of the pergolas which will be in natural timber as well. I would have loved having the pool in the courtyard off the house, but pool fences are ugly - no matter what material they are in. Below are Pinterest images which I love. Here's hoping for a bright, healthy couple of weeks ahead for everyone!
These pretty perennials and shrubs are deer-resistant shade plants, and most of them bloom for added color.
A GIRL CAN DREAM Lately, I have completely ignored the outside areas of my home and it really needs some attention... but while curb appeal is important, there are other outdoor areas to consider... I think it is just as important to have a little private spot to relax, read, bird watch, and entertain Here's my outdoor to do list... 1. GUTTER SYSTEM FOR DECK I'm dying to do this to my deck off my master bedroom - not for the deck itself, but so that when it rains I can still sit outside under the deck with a book and leave my furniture cushions in place without them getting soaked so I could actually go from this... to this... I would love to be able to eat outside with the rain sprinkling around us ... There are a few companies that do this - I'm looking into this one 2. FENCE REPAIR... no brainer - its just old and falling down... 3. MOVE THE BUILT-IN BARBECUE because the previous owner put it right smack in the middle of the patio - the BBQ really needs to be moved to the edge of the patio and while we are at it.... can we do this too?.... 4. ADD AN OUTDOOR FIREPLACE so I have somewhere to roast my marshmallows... An inviting fireplace with the built-in barbecue to the side would be wonderful on warm summer nights or cool fall evenings... of course... now it snowballs... If I move the BBQ I will need to.... 5. REDO PATIO FLOOR Belgard pavers would be ideal - I'm a fan of their products - and the patio really needs a facelift check Belgard products out here they are like the Mercedes Benz of pavers... amazing range of color and product style 6. SIDE YARD REVAMP although I guess its not really a 'revamp' if it was never finished in the first place... I'm thinking of a nice crunchy gravel pathway - (functional for easy pet waste pickup) but I also really like this look Its a shady spot, so thinking of some ferns, and lots of green... more inspiration..... 7. I NEED A GOOD POTTING BENCH with a shelf or two this is a diy project - cute huh? This one below is $900 from Restoration Hardware seriously? $900? I think I'd rather see if Mr. B can make Ana White's version and maybe add shelves... ? 8. PATIO FURNITURE Once the gutter system is installed in the deck above, I can add some deep seating to my patio without it getting destroyed by rain and muck - an extension of living space right outside my family room... (but holy crap, have you seen the prices of patio furniture these days?) especially sectionals like this.. Ana White thinks I could make my own... what do you think? 9. DINING TABLE & CHAIRS We love eating outside and entertaining there... but our current round table only seats about 5 people comfortably... I've been thinking that CraigsList may have some tables for cheap... Ana has plans for great tables too... Ana White is so amazing - you have to check out all her plans and tutorials.. she makes you believe you can do it yourself... anyone have a good handyman who can follow simple plans? These are all Ana White creations. Love them. 10. UPPER DECK DECOR... I have a good sized deck off my master bedroom.. after a few needed repairs it will be ready to 'deck out'.. it doesn't have any shade there... wonder if we can build an arbor over part of it... or a canopy? not good in wind though.. I will need cozy seating and plants, too It seems my outdoor list is nearly as long as my indoor list... I haven't even mentioned redoing the flower beds and adding more boxwood.. or repainting the benches but I did recently redo a flower bed and plant several hydrangea shrubs there... because I need more hydrangeas in my life... and more boxwood... Better go work on that list... I might actually be able to finish it in say - 5 years? Ha! ******************************* Hi there- I have enjoyed reading your blog. I really love your ideas. I am searching for help to pick out stone and exterior colors. I am attaching a picture of our exterior house plans (no stone or detail added) and a picture of a home that we used as inspiration when designing our home. I like the placement of their stone. I currently like colors like Anonymous by Sherwin Williams and Copley Gray by Ben Moore. I am just having such a hard time deciding though. I have no idea what to do color wise with shutters. 3rd picture is a home that I love the colors/design of. Any help or advise would be well appreciated!!! Thanks! Jessica Hi Jessica, I think that stone placement on the 2nd photo is good - not too much, but a nice accent. And, until you choose your stone you can't really pick out paint. Your stone palette, whether it be faux or real stone, will dictate the tones you use in your paint. You want something that will compliment the stone. I would say that Copley Gray is probably a safe bet, based on the fact that most stone veneer will have grays and browns. But its best to take a swatch with you to the stone samples to have a look. The white trim always pops nicely against stone, but choose a white that compliments the house color, too. Some whites are very light grays, some are very light beige or cream if you still need help once you have chosen the stone, email me again with photos and I will be happy to suggest some colors. Good Luck!

Let's talk about patio decorating ideas and porches too and how to make your outdoor space into a romantic sitting area.
The flowering English cottage garden might be the trending landscaping option your yard has been missing. Read expert takes on the English cottage garden trend.
(aka: Agapanthus 'Midnight Star') Agapanthus 'Navy Blue' is the most popular agapanthus selection in the UK and much of Europe. This deciduous selection has also shown incredible winter hardiness in open field trials in western Michigan (zone 5b/6a). Starting in July (NC), Agapanthus 'Navy Blue' is topped with sturdy 4' tall stalks, each ending in medium-sized clusters of dark royal-blue flowers, which continue well into August.
Ready, set, go..........In the Midwest that is, the new landscape season is nearly upon us. The trends I experienced last year, that are carrying forward this season, are very intriguing to me. Some are a new take on an old theme, particularly propelled by millennials, others an uptick in established patterns. (actually hate the thought of following a trend, but these appeal) Let's take a look, any of these to your liking? Taking the Interiors OUT.......... Not a covered patio, fully emerged in the elements. The use of upholstered outdoor furniture up markets your space instantly. The comfort level soars. A favorite manufacturer is Lee Industries From interesting rug patterns, poufs and high fashion outdoor pillows.....enjoy decorating this extra 'room' Empty Vessels In the above image, place your thumb over the pot and notice how your eye will 'float' across the photo. When removed, your eye will focus, while encompassing the surrounding environs. With the aid of empty vessels you create instant focal points, a foil against plants, an exclamation point of interest. Could these be planted? Of course! Whether creating focal points or no maintenance accents, the typical pot leans towards the Grecian oil jar style Ornamental Grasses From no maintenance to low maintenance, people are gravitating towards the ease of these plants. Wispy and romantic to columnar and structured. Tall to short and in a variety of foliage colors, these specimens have much to offer. I noticed on our garden tour to France last year, the heavy use of grasses, not what one typically thinks of when in French gardens. Free standing Espaliers Espaliers are most often seen hugging a wall, as originally intended. In Europe when few people had land, a spot would be found or carved out against a wall, preferably south or west, to plant a fruit bearing tree for food. Today aesthetics rule the day. Pre-formed trees are most interesting to me as free-standing sentinels. They delineate a space, add massive interest, create a fence like barrier in limited spaces and yes, bear fruit. A Garden within a Garden When designing a garden, I keep in the back of my mind, the principle of creating a getaway spot for intimate conversation or as an individual retreat. In Europe, where I studied gardening, homeowners spaces are often a series of 'rooms' requiring one to explore and sit within the garden. In the US, we usually have one vantage point, say a deck or patio from which to survey our 'land'. Consider creating another space within, providing new views uses and perspectives A Clothesline I am of a certain age that remembers laundry day at my Grandmothers. My parents had a washer and dryer, Grandma had a wringer washer and a clothesline. It screamed summer to me and the clothes were oh so fresh. Unlike my Grandmother, I was endlessly fascinated. This is a movement sparked by those who have never experienced a clothes line. It 'romanticizes' wash day. A few years ago, I was working with a client creating French gardens on her expansive property. I suggested two solid lavender beds, a bit larger than a king sized sheet. After washing her sheets, they were spread over the lavender for drying. The lavender released their fragrant oils in the sun as they dried.....viola! In the aid of Bees As the below quote states, this is a serious predicament. There is welcome interest in the preservation of bees. Along the way we can create colorful borders with bee favored plantings, pick up a new hobby as a beekeeper, enjoying the tasty rewards of bottling honey, become a soap maker, craft colorful beehives...... A friend of my husbands became a passionate beekeeper, hoping his enthusiasm would rub off on him, I began to design the beehive and borders filled with lavender.......sadly, not to bee Imaginative Lighting Up lighting has long been a staple. This is still a format I employ, but ask me for help with the exterior lighting on your home and I am in heaven. Let's peek at a few other options........ Wall Washing with lighting Rope lighting along a rock border Oh yeah!!!!! It is that time again, enjoy! Debra
