In the eastern edges of Europe during the 13th century in what is now known as Turkey, an art form emerged and eventually spread in popularity all across the Asian landscape to the far-reaching border of China. Artisans combined water, plant oils, and mineral pigments to create intricate marbling patterns that they transferred onto paper. (This post contains affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy for full details.) Examples of Ebru Marbling Last winter, when I introduced Ebru art during our homespun World Geography class, I didn't personally know where to get the necessary cattle gall or gum tragacanth to make an authentic insoluble water solution. I didn't own a single pigment, stylus needle, or horsehair brush. But, I wasn't going to let that stop me from recreating this ancient marbling technique with my kids. I just had to improvise with a few items from around the house. Here's my cheat sheet to help you do the same! What you'll need: art paper 9 x 13 baking dish (We used a disposable tin pan.) can of shaving cream acrylic paints popsicle sticks To make an "Ebru" print: Spray a generous amount of shaving cream onto the bottom of the 9 x 13 baking pan. Use a popsicle stick to spread the shaving cream until it is level. Dollop 3-4 different paint colors around the smooth shaving cream. (At this point, you can try to create a pattern.) Use a clean popsicle stick to lightly swirl the dollops of paint on the surface of the shaving cream. Don't stir or mix the paint. The paint should just rest on the top layer of the shaving cream. Press a piece of art paper over the marbled pattern. Use the palm of your hand to smooth the paper from edge to edge. Press gently to ensure the transfer of color. Lift the paper in one swift motion. The shaving cream will have formed peaks on the paper. Set the print aside to begin the drying process. When the shaving cream is nearly dry, use a clean popsicle stick to scrape the excess paint and shaving cream off the page. Stroke from one side of the page all the way to the other side, following the natural pattern of the print. In the end, you'll not only end up with a beautifully marbled print but also a clean-smelling house as a result of all the shaving cream! Afferin! ...that's "well done" in Turkish. Another knock-off Ebru Method Apparently, you can combine cornstarch and water to make an insoluble mixture similar to that made with cattle gall. Here's a look at the entire process from start to finish. Set your homeschool day on autopilot! Thank you! Your task cards will be sent to your inbox shortly. Set your homeschool day on autopilot! Cottagecore Aesthetic Painting -"Pomegranate" fruits and trees were popular symbols in ancient Asian and Mediterranean art. It is customary to have it on New Year's Eve or Thanksgiving tables, with the belief that it will bring abundance to the home. As a symbol in ancient art it is generally used to denote fertility and abundance, a meaning which holds true in traditions throughout the Orient. The connection that the pomegranate bears to fertility and abundance is derived from the fact that it has many sweet and beautiful seeds that are contained within the fruit itself. Aside from being a source of healthy sweet juice, the pomegranate was useful by textile & felt artists for color purposes. The dye makers would produce a red color dye from the pomegranate’s flowers and the tannin within its rind was used for tanning leather hides. Tannin is also a useful compound that is frequently used in natural medicine with a variety of applications. Needle felted merino wool, with nuno-felted silk inclusions, hand-dyed silk tops, sari silk waste, mohair tops, viscose tops, Harris tweed threads, curly locks, spun silk threads, and hand-dyed silk carrier rods. For all of these reasons, the pomegranate design and fruit itself is always highly prized. Predominantly for its aesthetic look, medicinal properties and practical uses (Schneider). When used as a symbol in art from these regions it can thus be interpreted as representing fertility, healthy and plentiful bounty. A Turkish bath or hamam is similar to a Scandinavian sauna but is closer to a Roman bath. It is based on the same principles as the steam bath but the focus is on water rather than steam. In Turkey the hamam is a gently heated, tiled room with a heated marble slab called göbek taşı (tummy stone). Visitors lie on the stone slab and are scrubbed for exfoliation, then massaged with oils and finally washed clean with hot water. But the rumor is that, back in the day the baths were used for so many other purposes than just getting a wash.

A variety of the newest examples by Aykut Aydogdu, likely one of my favorite illustrators. The Turkish artist and graphic designer Aykut Aydogdu, based in Istanbul, once again reveals several appealing and poetic portraits, directing us into a surreal world overflowing with symbols and visual metaphors. Colloquially, and rather insultingly, known as 'gypsies', the history and culture of the Romani people is surrounded by stereotypes and misnomers, none more damningly pervasive than Esméralda from the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Osman Hamdi Bey, [Constantinople 1842-1910], Ottoman statesman, painter and art expert who put forth legislation aimed at regulating finds made by various archaeological enterprises in the Ottoman Empire and preventing the antiquities from being smuggled abroad. As a painter, he became famous while he was alive. He worked on compositions with figures and portraits, and he was the first Turkish artist who painted figures. In his paintings, there are many architectural and decorative details.
