1987年に登場したTW200は、本来は路面を選ばないアドベンチャートレールとしてデビューし、実際に冒険家の風間深志さんが史上初のバイクによる北極点到達(1987年)に使用したモデルとして知られていた。そんなTW200に転機が訪れたには、1990年代の後半。悪路を走破するための極太のタイヤとスリムな車体、安価な車両価格が、ストリートファッションを好む若い人たちから、カスタムバイクのベースモデルとして人気を集めはじめたのだった。そんな中、標準モデルではミニバイザー付きの角ライトだったヘッドライトを、丸目ライトに換装し、ウインカーも小型化したTW200E(1998年)が追加設定された。そのTW200Eがモデルチェンジし、エンジンをセロー225系の223cc空冷単気筒へと載せ替えたのが、2002年6月に発売された、TW225であった。なお、TW225とTW225Eと、表記が分かれている例があるが、これは角目と丸目の違いではなく、単にリリース時の表記が異なるだけで、同一のモデル。というか、TW225と表記されたのは、2002年の初登場時のみで、以降のリリースではTW225Eとされていた。2007年の最終モデルまで、カラーチェンジのみを行ない、排出ガス規制の強化(平成18年規制)を前に、モデルライフを終えた。
