Underwear: The Fashion History by Alison Carter (New York: Drama, 1992) Few things capture people's attention like a corset... even if it's empty. I certainly wouldn't have captured anyone's attention with this bare wall, but what follows is a plan to make it a little more exciting. I intend to draw a clothes line were victorian undergarments are pinned along it - my reference books and inspiration for this project. Support and Seduction: A History of Corsets and Bras by Beatrice Fontanel (New York: Abrams, 1997) You may remember this photograph from a past Valentine's post. There's nothing like an actual photograph for accuracy. Support and Seduction: A History of Corsets and Bras by Beatrice Fontanel (New York: Abrams, 1997) On my clothes line will hang a Victorian bra. The ad above shows what is probably the first sports bra. Described as perfect for the ladies who practice tennis and horseback riding, ideal to wear under light clothing and bathing suits. Underwear: The Fashion History by Alison Carter (New York: Drama, 1992) Also hanging, a frilly knickerbocker and chemisette. Underwear: The Fashion History by Alison Carter (New York: Drama, 1992) No room on the line for crinolettes and crinolines... Underwear: The Fashion History by Alison Carter (New York: Drama, 1992) ...but black hosiery, certainly. Do click on the images to enlarge and read the descriptions - priceless. Underwear: The Fashion History by Alison Carter (New York: Drama, 1992) Sorry, but long-johns just did not make the cut. Above is a rough sketch of my Victorian clothes line. I added white gloves even if they're not undies, but I bet they were always being laundered. I cut out the pieces of garments. I drew a scaled version of my laundry wall. Used my cut-outs to move them around along the clothes line, to find the right positioning. And drew the Victorian undergarments directly on to the sheet. This will be my reference guide for when I'm ready to paint them on the wall.
After girdles and bras I think it’s time to talk a bit about underpants. Or panties, knickers, briefs, drawers- there’s a Swedish idiom that say that a beloved child has many names, and that’s seems to be true for the most intimate of all undergarments. It’s also a rather new one. Knickers have been worn under gowns earlier, but not until the 19th century it became more common. At the beginning of the 20th century, underpants were voluminous things that reached at least to the knees. Perhaps not very sexy by today’s standards, but I have no doubt that this lady looked very risqué back then. She’s even smoking! Being so wide it's sometimes hard to see if these are knickers or just a petticoat, but I think they are the former here. When the skirts grow shorter, underpants grew shorter too. Through the 1920’s-1940’s they seem to have been cut basically the same, a boxer short style often in very sheer fabrics and decorated with lace. 1920's French silk knickers. 1930's black silk knickers, absolutely to die for. I have two of my grandmother’s Greta’s cotton underpants from the late 30’s/early 40’s and they are extremely sheer and delicate, with lovely lace inserts. There were also a more modest style around, “directoire knickers” that went down to the knees. Though I admit that they don’t look so modest in this ad from 1910... Underpants were also knitted and you can quite easily find knitting patterns from the 30’s and 40’s, usually with a matching vest or bra. By the end of the 40’s underpants seems to become more fitted, especially after the war and fabrics when stretch and various man-made fibers became more common. Underpants like these from the fifties can easily be found today, even if they nowadays have little sisters that are much, much briefer. If you excuse the pun. Weekdays panties is obviously not a new invention. This piece is a wearable art. It is an actual 1950's inspired rain coat, made of 100% polyurethane, black color. The skirt is expendable, really wide, can be worn with a hoop skirt underneath, but doesn't have to. This is an art piece, was made as part of an art show in 2009. It also is part of series "Femme Fatal" Measurements: chest 36", waist 27", sleeve length 26", all over center back length 58". Center front closure (snaps) at the waist area.
