***Pick up your FREE Activity Pack*** Known as Richard the Lionheart (because he was a fierce warrior),King Richard I is commonly considered a brave king who stood beside his soldiers when standing up to enemies. A deeply religious man, when he became king, he swore to recapture Jerusalem - a city that had fallen to the Muslims two years prior under Saladin - as a holy crusade. This became known as the "Third Crusade." After three years of fighting, a peace treaty was signed in 1192. It left Jerusalem under Muslim control, but allowed Christians to have access to the land. Jerusalem was sacred to all three of the major religious groups because : Christians saw it as the place where Jesus was crucified and ascended to heaven Jews saw it as the site of Solomon's ancient temple Muslims saw it as the site where Muhammad met Abraham, Moses, and Jesus The city has been passed back and forth, captured and recaptured, several times over the course of history. The crusades began in 1095, when a group of Arabs took over the city and refused to allow Jews or Christians to enter the city. The Pope called for a battle to recapture the city, and hence began a series of crusades lasting nearly a century, and even included the tragic Children's Crusade. As the fourth child, Richard never should have been crowned king; nevertheless, due to disease and death, he was crowned in 1189 upon the death of his father Henry II. Though one of the best-known British monarchs, he did not speak English and during his ten-year reign, he only spent about six months in the British Isles. Upon his death, he was succeeded by John (the villain from Robin Hood). I think we're really starting to find our groove! I think we're beyond the testing phase, I think they've figured me out and I'm now able to work on figuring out their individual needs and I KNOW they are a whole bunch of sweethearts. I'm even willing to ignore the fact that one little one asked me if T.V's were invented when I was little. In his defense, I had just whipped out the record player and watched their eyes turn as big as saucers when they saw the MASSIVELY huge record {that they kept referring to as a CD} with "Free to Be You and Me" on the cover... Anybody remember this oldie!? A little recap of our week... Daily 5 is going wonderfully. We're up to 13 minutes with Read to Self and we're up to 15 minutes for Word Work. We've opened up our book nooks... Cozy places around our room to do Read to Self ...and the kids are loving making words with pipe cleaners and clay! I'm absolutely amazed at how quickly they picked up on how to use IPICK when shopping for books to place in their independent reading bookshelves. Such BIG kids! Are you familiar with the FOSS kits for teaching science? I hear mixed reviews - but I'm somebody who LOVES them! Right now we're hot and heavy into solids/liquids and we played around on the FOSS website this week on our Mimio... Click on the picture to head over to the games section of the FOSS website! We've launched our writer's workshop and the kiddos are working hard to build their writing muscles! This is always tricky at the beginning of the year - but I'm usually amazed at how quickly they build their stamina! One way that I encourage quiet writing time {or "hot pencil" time as we refer to it} is by hanging a large wooden pencil onto the middle of our white board to serve as a visual reminder. Ours looks something like this: I can't remember where I got mine - but if you click on the picture it will take you to the website for this pencil! I also play "quiet thinking music". A favorite CD of our is: LOVE!!!! In math we're hot and heavy into math Workplaces. We've created our own picture problems, graphed, counted money, sorted bugs, created numbers sentences using ten frames...you name it, we've done it. A class favorite this week was a Bridges Math game "Which Numeral Will Win 1-4" In Social Studies we've been learning about families. Our focus this week was exploring the past, present and future. A great book that is part of our curriculum: It explores this little guy's life when he was "younger"{past}, now that he's a bit older {present} and what he wants to be when he grows up {future}. We worked on these today too... Click {HERE} to pick up your own! Crazy to think that's just a snippet of our week...we moved mountains!!!!!! And the winner of the trimmer/cutter giveaway through MyBinding.com is... a Rafflecopter giveaway Congrats, Debbie - I'll be emailing you shortly!!!!! Happy weekend all! It's a whole lotta football for this family. One boy Saturday the other Sunday!
Students really seemed to enjoy themselves during our Acadian unit. We explored the lifestyle of the people in Meteghan. A few highlights: We learned about the importance of the ocean to the people of Meteghan. Catching lobster is one of the major industries for the region. Aren't our lobster traps nifty?!

1-2-3 Come Do A Social Studies Icebreaker With Me! "My Home" is a quick and easy "craftivity" perfect for those studying about neighborhoods or families, or use as a sweet icebreaker for the first week of school, as it's a wonderful way to get to know your new students. You can also do this for an easy activity that parents can work on with their child during your Open House. Completed projects make a wonderful back to school bulletin board. If you send a "welcome to school" summer letter out, you could also include the house pattern in that, or send it home the first day of school. Children take home, complete and bring back the next day to share with their new classmates. What an interesting and fun way for them to learn about each other, which also gives them practice sharing in front of the class. So your kiddos get to know a bit about their teacher, make sure to do one for yourself to use as an example. Here's What To Do: Students write their family's last name at the top, write the number of members in their family and then draw a picture of them. Inform children to label their drawing to tell who is represented. Let them know that they can include pets as well. Children glue a photgraph of themselves in the window. For the door, students complete the writing prompt "My favoirte room is..." and then explain why. Some schools still have "knows their address" as a standard, so I've included a window for that as well. Children color their house the appropriate color and cut it out. After students share their homes, make a classroom "neighborhood" as a bulletin board. Click on the link to view/download the My Home back to school icebreaker activity. Thanks for visiting. Feel free to PIN away! My "Pin It" button is at the top. I hope you can stop by tomorrow for another home-sweet-home "craftvity" entitled H is for House. "If you don't risk, you can't grow. If you don't grow, you can't become the best you, you can be!" -Unknown

La famille- teach your students family members and relationships with this cut and paste activity. For students who have challenges with note-taking this will help them organize their thoughts and understand family members in French.
This is a unit filled with activities to help your students learn the vocabulary for family members as well as begin writing sentences about the relationships between two family members. This unit includes: - Vocabulary list - Letter fill in the blanks - Family tree questions (Who is the brother of... - en Francais) - Mots Croises (word search) - Family Tree Puzzle (see my free download!) - Mon Arbre Genealogique (My family tree) activity - Answer Keys *Worksheets with instructions have two copies, one in English and one in French. That means if you teach French Immersion or an intermediate French you can use the French instructions, but if you are working with Beginners you could choose to use the English instructions! I used some of these worksheets with my Grade 7 and 8s and they thought they were great, but I also plan to use them with my Grade 4s this year so I think that you could use them with any middle years grade!
