How did WWI turn America into an Isolationist society? By delving into a wide variety of historical sources from WWI and the time period following the "Great War," students will come to a better understanding of isolationist sentiments in the 1920s. Throughout the lesson students will: 1) Respond to a Bell Ringer that asks them to brainstorm reasons a country should avoid war. 2) Read a short informational piece about America's involvement in WWI and the isolationist feelings that followed. 3) Analyze photographs and watch video clips pertaining to WWI injuries and illnesses. 4) Listen to an audio recording of WWI veterans recounting their wartime experiences. 5) Examine primary sources from the postwar time period and hypothesize how these sources could incur isolationist feelings. 6) Finish with an exit ticket that asks students to define isolationism and explain why it occurred in 1920s America.
