Two Pod, Two Stem by Jan Ernst Dimensions: H 35 cm Materials: White Stoneware Jan Ernst’s work takes on an experimental approach, as he prefers making bespoke pieces by hand. His organic design stems from his abstract understanding of form and space and deep connection with the natural world. Jan Ernst is a multidisciplinary creative based in Cape Town, who specializes in functional art and collectible design. He holds a degree in Architecture and moved to Spain, completing his master’s degree. After 4 years of working in corporatearchitecture, he co-founded Studio AN, a creative platform for architecture and interior design. He aims to create conversation driven by organic forms and awkward negative spaces in the pieces while bringing people together with the narrative quality of the work.

Guided in her ceramics studio by nature’s symmetrical and asymmetrical forms, artist Jennifer McCurdy works with inspiration from everyday objects, producing vessels that imitate natural specimens such as malformed conch shells and burst milkweed pods. Her sculptures are habitually one color, a white the same shade as the ocean’s surf. Keeping a very limited palette allows McCurdy to highlight the hollow areas of her pieces, casting shadows from her chiseled patterns. “I use a translucent porcelain body because it has a beautiful surface, and it conveys the qualities of light and shadow that I wish to express,” said McCurdy in her artist statement. Bonnie Seeman grew up in Miami, Florida with a propensity towards anatomy illustration and the dazzling colors and rich foliage of the Miami landscape. Developing her technique with porcelain and glass, Seeman channeled this inspiration; the resulting vessels are beautiful and macabre combinations of anatomical parts and plant forms. Often the utilitarian vessels open to reveal her trademark dichotomy between outward beauty and visceral illness. Instead of dwelling on dying, Seeman’s palpable forms culminate in an acute awareness and awe toward life, nature, and vitality. Shortly after completing her master’s degree in Fine Arts, Seeman was recognized by Galeria OMR in Mexico City, a gallery known for it conceptual, cutting-edge artists. In effect, Seeman’s porcelain was taken out of the craft context and placed in art exhibitions such as ARCO in Madrid, FIAC in Paris, and Art Basel. She shows extensively throughout the United States and was recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation 2005 Biennial Competition Award.
