Over the last two weeks, in Big Buddy's history curriculum, we've been reading about Babylon and King Nebuchadnezzar. History is probably Big Buddy's favorite subject; he enjoys hearing old stories and learning about ancient cultures. As we make are way through the The Story of the World: Ancient Times, I've been very impressed with Big Buddy's ability to remember details and his continual thirst for me knowledge. I supplement with lots of other books and Big Buddy is constantly asking me to read him another book/chapter. After reading about The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, I thought Big Buddy would enjoy creating his own version. I'm constantly saving interesting junk and had some cardboard toy packaging pieces from Christmas that I thought would be the perfect base. I then gathered up a few other craft materials and set Big Buddy free to design his own hanging gardens. Our Supplies Other than setting out a book for Big Buddy to reference I didn't really give him much instruction. The book pictured above is DK Eyewitness Books: Mesopotamia, which has been a great resource for studying Ancient Mesopotamia. If you are looking for more Hanging Gardens of Babylon resources I'd also recommend the books: Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by Diana Bentley and Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by Micahel Woods. The cartoon, Time Warp Trio: The Seven Blunders of the World, (about three boys who travel back in to time) was also a fun way to reemphasis some the facts we had learned; you can watch the video for free on you-tube, here. Big Buddy especially liked being able to use the glue gun. Surprisingly, Jeremy, who absolute hates it it when his students use a glue gun for there models only had praises for Big Buddy's work - I guess it pays to be his son...and only six. Mini Man and Little Lady also wanted to join the fun. everyones gardens My favorite part of Big Buddy's garden was the river across the top and the waterfalls to the grounds below. The gate in progress.
Hello everyone and welcome to Nonna's Craft Corner! I hope your week is going well for you. I've spent the first part of my week cleaning house! So many of those "routine" cleaning jobs have been put aside while I was working on our VBS set and now that it's finished...it's time to clean this house! *If you are looking for the Fantabulous Cricut Crawl post, please click HERE* Our "VBS Kick-Off Party" was this past Sunday and I'm very thankful to say that the set was completed and ready to be revealed! The kids loved it and that made all the work worth it! Now, we cover it back up with our room dividers and wait for VBS which begins on June 3rd. As promised, I have pictures for you.... Here is what we began with... tons and tons of cardboard boxes! Next came cutting and putting boxes together to fit the dimensions and shapes we needed. After we got our boxes together, we arranged them to create our Babylon scene... Next we covered the boxes with a drywall mix and started painting... After everything was painted, the fun part started! Time to decorate! The "tiles" were actually fabric panels. It came in long sheets and everything had to be cut out. Then we used a spray adhesive and glued everything onto the boxes.... (click on photo to enlarge) The "hedges" are cardboard boxes, cut to size and covered with millions of green streamers cut to about 5 inches each. Hours and hours and hours and hours! I took one home to work on and my friend took one home to work on. Getting it back to the church was the hard part... These things are 6 feet long, it goes all the way into my front seat! So, I guess it's back to cleaning this house for me! Thanks for letting me share something near and dear to my heart with you today! Until next time,

Michelle Barrera let me use lots great pictures of how her church, Teaching Word Faith Center (Fort Worth, TX) decorated for Athens VBS several years back. Here is how they made large pots. You can see the bases of the vases are made of cardboard and duct-tape which is then covered with paper mache. They then covered the vases with plaster (At least, I think that's plaster). The greenery really looks stunning on these. More Greco-Roman Decor Here More VBS Rome Resources and Ideas Shared on Throwback Thursday
