GETTING TF OUT OF THE CITY If there’s one thing I can’t stress enough as a city dweller, it’s that getting away from the concrete and sidewalks and in touch with nature every once in a while is not just nice, it’s important for sheer sanity. Rich & I had been feeling bogged down by the hustle and grind of NYC, and made an impromptu decision to spend the week at a cabin in the mountains of Vermont. Part of this was fueled by (no pun intended!) the purchase of a car. That made getting away super easy. But we basically did it because of the sweet deal we scored with an incredibly charming Vermont mountain cabin. Without hesitation, we loaded up our car with food and supplies, popped Speedy in the back seat with his bed (he rode on my lap most of the way in the passenger’s seat, LBH), and left the city for a weekend of unwinding. THE CABIN The space was the cutest combination of rustic, charming and eclectic. The front side of it has solarium windows, which the lofted beds overlook. And a brook literally runs through the property, making for the most meditative white noise to fall asleep to. The owners had everything we could possibly need, from small pantry staples and kitchen tools to comfy spots for lounging. Also, can👏 we👏 talk👏 about👏 that👏 bathtub👏? I enjoyed a bubble bath every day, and appreciated a tub I could fully stretch out in while simultaneously soaking up the sun. WHAT WE DID So what did we do while there? We spent afternoons checking out the beautiful scenery with Speedy, who fucking loved it and made me wonder if he wasn’t a country mouse after all. There are a ton of hiking trails within walking distance of the cabin since it’s located in Green Mountain National Forest. We also drove out to Warren and Mulberry to check out the cute country stores in that area and to hit the farmer’s market. Other than that, we enjoyed the quiet in our incredibly comfortable place, read, and played music together. The place had an upright piano and Rich brought his saxophone. I hadn’t played in so long! Oh, and we ATE. Cooked and ate like rustic country kings, putting a ton of focus on leisurely cooking. One of my faves from the trip was the Apple & Maple Cream Galette we had for breakfast -Get the recipe here). On our last night there, we drove to Waterbury to visit Prohibition Pig, a brewery/bar that also focuses on BBQ. If you’re willing to take the trip, it’s definitely worth it. Their smoked brisket is amazing. So much so that it turned our vegetarian friend into a meat eater last year. WAS IT WORTH IT? Hell yes. I’m writing this as we’re just getting back into the city, and I’m looking at NYC from a more relaxed and refreshed state of mind that couldn’t have come sooner.
