This white bistro plate was made by Bennington Potters in Bennington, Vermont. Glossy white glaze on the top, unglazed sides and bottom. Measures approximately 8" x 6.5" without handle. In good condition, with no chips or cracks. There is some staining on the unglazed base - it looks like it might have been oil absorbed by the clay.

I was invited to do a guest post about my paintings and how I use them on my food blog by Alisha of The Ardent Epicure. Here's what I said: I like to make food that tastes good and the way things look is as important as how they taste. Perhaps that because I am a painter who cooks and I am a cook who blogs… I use my watercolor paintings to illustrate my blog. Sometimes an image has a direct connection to a recipe I post as in my post Buttermilk is Cool, and sometimes it's a whimsical choice. as in my post for Linguini with Fresh Tomato Sauce. Recently I found a cookbook published in Vermont in 1954. It's filled with recipes and hints that reflect what was happening in kitchens in the 1950s. I have been combining selections from this cookbook with my paintings to create posts. Here’s one for a Peanut and Bacon Sandwich. I also design bookmarks, labels and notecards that can be downloaded and printed for free. I call these PIN’s and PIN means Print It Now. When you visit my blog you'll see PIN - Print It Now in the column on the left under the basket of blueberries. I hope you find something there you like. The words that are in bold are all links that will take you to my food blog and the the post that is referenced. Carol Egbert

OK people, be prepared to be blown away here (well unless of course you've already heard of or tried this before). About a year ago I was browsing through the King Arthur website when I came across one of their recipes for apple pie. I know your probably thinking "Big deal, there are millions of apple pie recipes out there." But don't stop reading yet! It wasn't the recipe that caught my eye so much as it was the method of cooking it that startled me. This recipe said to cook it in a sealed paper bag! What? I have been making apple pie for a long time (it happens to be one of my husband's favorite pies) and I will go so far as to say that I make a pretty darn good one, so I wasn't out there looking to perfect my go-to recipe. I just stumbled on this, and it intrigued me so much I had to try it.....immediately. I honestly was not prepared for how wonderfully delicious this pie turned out to be. I just didn't think it would yield anything that would leave an impression. But boy was I wrong! Don't you love it when that happens? I swear on the Holy Bible that everyone who has had this pie insists it is the best apple pie they've ever had. Cooking it in a sealed paper bag creates steam, pair that along with the high cooking temperature, and it somehow produces a down right amazing pie. I will admit I was nervous about putting a paper bag in the oven, but as long as you are very careful and make sure it's not touching the sides of the oven, it will be fine. Promise. So don't be afraid. You have to go try this pie....really, you just have to! Apple Pie in a Paper Bag (adapted from King Arthur recipe) For crust: half the Pie Crust recipe (click here for recipe) About 10 cups apples, peeled, cored and sliced 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp freshly ground nutmeg 2 tbsp lemon juice 2-3 tbsp flour Preheat oven to 425. Spray pie plate with cooking spray - you are probably thinking you can skip this because you don't normally do this, but I am warning you that it is necessary (something about that steam makes the crust stick to the pie plate if it's not greased). Line pie plate with the dough and fold the edges under, pinch seams all around or crimp it using a fork. Put sliced apples in microwave safe bowl and stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg and lemon juice. Microwave uncovered for 5 minutes. Spoon apples into pie plate, leaving the juices at the bottom. Add flour to bowl and whisk together with the juices left from the apples. Pour this over the apples. Topping: In bowl of food processor, add 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup flour and 1/2 cup cold butter cut into pieces. Pulse until mix is crumbly. Spread topping over the apple filling. Place pie into paper grocery bag. Fold it close and staple it shut all along the fold (can also use paper clips). Bake at 425 for one hour, then shut the oven off and let the pie set in there with the door shut for another 10 minutes. Remove pie from oven and carefully open it. Take pie out of bag and set on rack to cool completely before slicing (unless you like it warm and you don't care if it falls apart on you).

So, back to Vermont and settling into the studio again. Hundreds of ladybugs were hanging out there, ready to welcome me home. It's so good to be back to this beautiful part of the world! I returned with a duffle bag full of work in process and lots of packages of joss paper. I don't think there is a source any nearer than Boston's Chinatown to buy more, so I came home prepared. I believe I have just about reached the right length on this book made with the yellow joss paper made in the shape of a large coin. Back to the tea bags, I am continuing to create small boxes out of two bags sewn together. There are now over 100 pieces to the collection and I still haven't figured out how they will come together as a work, but eventually I'm sure the idea will surface. This week I also completed a piece that I had started in December before I left. I need to decide how the two separate pieces will attach to one another....for now I have used large paper clips to hold them together. I also may want to use some gloss medium on the piece to finish it, so there are still decisions ahead. I like the combination of working with the joss paper and the tea bags. It gives me a little more variety rather than working with just one medium. But clearly it is the joy of manipulating paper that is holding my interest.

Elisa Jarnefelt started her Vermont-based illustration and paper goods company, As Little Cooking as Possible, in 2018. That was five years after she had climbed Mt Mansfield for the first time. During that hiking trip, Elisa and her husband got the idea that maybe these mountains would be their home someday. A few years later, they moved to the Green Mountain State. “Vermont Alphabet” is a celebration of Vermont. It’s made up of ink drawings inspired by all the things that Elisa has stumbled upon and loves about Vermont. It’s a poster that’s perfect for any home in Vermont, or for anyone who has left their heart in Vermont. Elisa is a winner of Common Deer's 2019 call to artist for the "This is Vermont" print series, an anual art competion held by CD to celebrate Vermont based artists and our community. Come Round for Tea, 12 x 12 x 1, Tea bags, bamboo sieve Barbara Bartlett – The Art of Tea II Opening Reception: Friday, October 19, 5-7pm Gallery Talk: Thursday, November 15, 5:30pm October 19 – November 16, 2012 E.N. Wennberg Gallery and Gallery 3 Barbara Bartlett, of Woodstock, VT, grew up in Chicago and pursued a career in special education and social work before following what had been a longtime interest in art. Bartlett initially studied watercolor and acrylic painting, but soon became drawn to printmaking. The aspects of layering and texturing easily translated into mixed media, which has been the focus of her work for the past several years. While still continuing to create two-dimensional work, she has recently become fascinated by the possibilities of working three dimensionally, using re-cycled or re-purposed material. Bartlett has exhibited work throughout the country and in Australia and is represented in private and corporate collections in the United States, Europe and Australia. She now divides her time between studios in Vermont and Sydney. Tea Weaves, 46 x 40, Tea bags, red thread For her exhibition at AVA, Bartlett will be exhibiting her “tea series.” The artist has been a lover of tea since childhood and three years ago tea bags began to show up in her artwork. Bartlett states: “Since then, I have immersed myself in the world of the overlooked, discarded tea bag—the beauty of the stained paper, the subtle colors of the spent tea leaves, the bright variety of tea tag designs, and even the simple charm of stained tea strings. I love the aspect of recycling and reuse that comes into play in this work. Although the process of drying and dissembling the bags can be labor intensive, there is also a satisfying and meditative quality to re-purposing the materials.” Note: Images which appear here may not be part of exhibit. Barbara Bartlett will give a gallery talk on Thursday, November 15 at 5:30pm. The talk is free and open to the public. A grab bag filled with a crazy mix of natural items collected by hand from the forest floor of my off grid property in the mountains of central Vermont. The mix will contain a hand picked selection of all kinds of natural materials straight from our woods. The mix of actual items in each bag is ever changing depending on what is available at the time of your order, but I guarantee that every bag will always contain plenty of variation of beautiful and useful natural forest materials for your crafting needs. Items that we commonly include in the bags are a variety of mosses and lichens, twigs, sticks, acorns and acorn caps, small pinecones, birch bark scrap pieces, cambium birch bark, birch scrolls, pinecone tips and paddles, birch twig catkins, and more! The pieces in this mix would make an excellent addition to fairy houses, potpourri, vase/bowl filler, table scatters, terrariums, ornaments, used in wreath making, home decor, product photography, packaging decor, craft projects and more! If any of the mosses become compressed during shipment, I recommend spritzing them with water, and fluffing them up a bit, this will help restore them to their original state. Air dry after spritzing. ————————
