The golden gate to the Château de Versailles was replaced in 2008 – more than 200 years after being torn down during the French Revolution. This #replica of the original 80m wrought iron and gold leaf gate now graces the entrance to the Château – for which a total of 100,000 gold leaves were crafted into the shapes of Fleur de Lys, crowns, Apollo masks, cornucopias, and the crossed capital Ls representing the Sun King Louis XIV. Grand Trianon at the Palace of Versailles
Since 1979, the Palace of Versailles has been listed as a World Heritage and is one of the greatest achievements in French 17th century art. Louis XIII's old hunting pavilion was transformed and extended by his son, Louis XIV, when he installed the Court and government there in 1682. A succession of kings continued to embellish the Palace up until the French Revolution.
