This colonial town in Colombia sits around the largest stone paved square in South America.
Villa de Leyva, founded by the Spanish in 1572, is a wonderful colonial town high up in the Andes with a beautiful, large plaza. The Baroque Iglesia Parroquial (parish church) was built around 1608 and restored after the earthquake of 1845. It is sometimes referred to as "la catedral" although there is no bishop here.
