Jean-Marie Mathias Philippe-Auguste Comte de Villiers de L'Isle-Adam (1838 ¿ 1889) stammte aus einer alten, verarmten Adelsfamilie und war ein verträumtes und übersensibles Kind. Seit 1857 lebte er in Paris, wo er sich als Journalist durchschlug und mit Mallarmé und Baudelaire befreundet war. Beeinflusst von Poe und Richard Wagner verfasste er Dramen (»Axel«), Romane (»Die Eva der Zukunft«) und vor allem Erzählungen mit oftmals grotesk-grausamem Inhalt, in denen er radikale Kritik an den Sitten seiner Zeit übte. Villiers de L'Isle-Adam gilt als Wegbereiter des Symbolismus und einer der bedeutendsten französischen Novellisten des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Neben Bühnenstücken und einem der ersten Science Fiction-Romane (»Die Eva der Zukunft«) verfasste er unter dem Einfluss nicht zuletzt von Poe vor allem raffiniert konstruierte Erzählungen mit grotesk-grausamem Inhalt, mit denen er zu einem der wichtigsten Wegbereiter des französischen Symbolismus wurde.
É de confundir! — Conto de Auguste Villiers De L’isle-Adam Numa cinza manhã de novembro, eu ia descendo pela beira do rio em passo apressado. Uma garoa fria molhava o ar. Passantes negros, abrigados em guarda- chuvas disformes, se entrecruzavam. O Sena amarelado carregava seus barcos de mercadorias parecidos com besouros. Nas pontes, o vento fustigava bruscamente os chapéus, cujos donos lutavam com o espaço para salvá-los, fazendo aqueles gestos e contorções sempre tão penosos para o artista. Minhas idéias eram pálidas e brumosas; a preocupação de um encontro de negócios, aceito na véspera, atazanava minha imaginação. O tempo era curto, resolvi me abrigar debaixo da marquise de um portão, de onde seria mais cômodo fazer sinal para um fiacre. Na mesma hora notei, bem ao meu lado, a entrada de um prédio quadrado, de aparência burguesa. Ele tinha se erguido na bruma como uma aparição de pedra, e, apesar da rigidez de sua arquitetura, apesar do vapor sinistro que o envolvia, percebi de imediato um certo ar de hospitalidade que serenou meu espírito. "Sem a menor dúvida", pensei, "as pessoas que moram aqui são gente sedentária! Essa soleira é um convite a parar! A porta não está aberta?" Então, com a maior polidez do mundo, satisfeito, chapéu na mão — até mesmo meditando em um madrigal para a dona da casa —, entrei, sorridente, e logo me deparei, no mesmo nível, com uma espécie de sala de teto envidraçado, de onde caía a luz do dia, lívida. Nas colunas estavam pendurados roupas, cachecóis, chapéus. Mesas de mármore estavam instaladas em todos os cantos. Vários indivíduos, de pernas esticadas, cabeça levantada, olhos fixos, jeito confiante, pareciam meditar. E os olhares eram sem pensamentos, os rostos eram da cor do tempo. Havia pastas abertas, papéis desdobrados perto de cada um deles. E então percebi que a dona da casa, com a cortesia acolhedora com que eu estava contando, era ninguém menos do que a Morte. Olhei para meus anfitriões. Decerto, para escapar dos aborrecimentos da vida azucrinante, a maioria dos que ocupavam a sala tinha assassinado seus corpos, esperando, assim, um pouco mais de bem-estar. Quando estava ouvindo o barulho das torneiras de cobre presas no muro e destinadas a regar diariamente aqueles restos mortais, escutei o ruído surdo de um fiacre. Ele parou defronte do estabelecimento. Fiz a reflexão de que meus homens de negócios estavam esperando. Virei-me para aproveitar a boa fortuna. De fato, o fiacre acabava de vomitar, na soleira do prédio, colegiais de pileque, que precisavam ver a Morte para acreditar nela. Olhei para o fiacre vazio e disse ao cocheiro: "Passage de L’Opéra!" Um pouco depois, nos bulevares, achei o tempo mais encoberto, sem nenhum horizonte. Os arbustos, vegetações esqueléticas, pareciam indicar vagamente, com a ponta dos galhos negros, alguns pedestres aos policiais ainda sonolentos. O carro ia apressado. Pela vidraça, os passantes me davam a impressão de água correndo. Chegando ao meu destino, pulei para a calçada e peguei a passagem, repleta de rostos preocupados. No final do corredor, bem na minha frente, reparei na entrada de um café — desde então consumido por um famoso incêndio (pois a vida é um sonho) —, relegado ao fundo de uma espécie de galpão, debaixo de uma arcada quadrada, de sinistra aparência. Os pingos de chuva que caíam no vidro de cima escureciam mais ainda a pálida claridade do sol. "É aqui", pensei, "que me esperam os meus homens de negócios, de copo na mão, olhos brilhantes e desafiando o Destino!" Então, virei a maçaneta da porta e me deparei, no mesmo nível, com uma sala onde a claridade do dia caía do alto, lívida, pela vidraça. Em colunas havia roupas, cachecóis, chapéus pendurados. Mesas de mármore estavam instaladas em todos os cantos. Vários indivíduos, de pernas esticadas, cabeça levantada, olhos fixos, jeito confiante, pareciam meditar. Todavia, confesso (caso haja um equívoco), o segundo olhar é mais sinistro que o primeiro!..."
