Description: This amazing vintage Bakelite bangle is a red color. Upon closer inspection it has slight nuances in color as most Bakelite does. The width of the bangle is on the thinner side, making it perfect for stacking or as a simple statement piece! Here at House of Olives we will admit to a Bakelite obsession. From rings, to earrings, to bangles, to necklaces, we have a little (hmmmm…or a lot) of pieces and even some decor! Bakelite is a wonderful material due to its strength, beauty, versatility (e.g. it can be dressed up or down) and ease of care (see history). We just warn you, be careful as Bakelite is highly addictive! Please review all photos as they are part of the description. Also, please read through the entire description and if you have any questions please contact us. Size: Approximately a 2 1/2” diameter Condition: In excellent vintage condition with no flaws. Due to the vintage nature, it may contain scuffs due to age and use. History: Bakelite was discovered in 1907 by Leo Hendrik Baekeland. Looking for a replacement for shellac, Baekeland produced a polymer that when mixed with fillers, produced a hard moldable plastic. Therefore, Bakelite, one of the earliest synthetic materials to transform modern life, was invented. Though it was relatively expensive at the time, it was soon found to have many uses, and because it could be made in many different colors, it brightened everyday life for many. Some colorful items made with Bakelite: jewelry, telephones, radios, and billiard balls, to name just a few. Today these items are sought out and prized by antique dealers and collectors alike. Here at House of Olive, we diligently search and seek out each of our unique pieces. We truly love “hunting” for each piece and often squeal with delight when we find them! Each item is truly special and although it is difficult to part with them, we are happy knowing someone will love them as much as us. Whether you are a collector, looking for a unique gift, or just nostalgic, we have something for everyone! Please remember our items are vintage, and although they range in condition, they can contain flaws, marks, or patina, which we think adds to their charm. We will always do our best to present all known flaws. Please review photos and descriptions carefully as we do not accept returns and do not want anyone to be disappointed. If you have any questions, please message us and we will be more than happy to help. Additionally, if known, we will provide the history of our pieces. At times, we are provided the history when we purchase an item. When not provided or known, we enjoy researching to learn the history. Please understand we do our best to provide the correct year and history of each item; however, we can make mistakes. We recommend always doing your own research as it is always fun to learn more. Please message us if you find or notice any mistake(s). All of our items are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Additionally, most of our silver, gold, and brass jewelry is polished to its original shine. However, for some of our brass or silver-plated decor items, we chose to only polish them slightly as some of our customer enjoy the vintage patina. We do however, try to remove some of the tarnish, so if you like a more polished look, the job is mostly complete. If you have your heart set on a more polished look or just do not want to do the polishing yourself (believe me, we get it!), please send us a message and we can polish the item for you before shipping. We combine shipping on multiple items when we can to help reduce shipping cost. On some of the larger and/or fragile items such as the Pyrex, we cannot combine shipping in order to prevent these items from chipping, cracking, or breaking. We understand (and completely agree) that paying for shipping is the worst part of purchasing an online item and we therefore set the shipping costs to be calculated for us based on weight and size. If the shipping cost ends up being less than what was paid, we will refund the difference back to you. Thank you for shopping with us! If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact us.

This matte black round leather necklace is adorned with a beautiful, retro, upcycled 22mm genuine vintage Bakelite (tested) guitar pick shape. The Bakelite charm is affixed to a silver plate, nickel free bail, and the piece is finished with a nickel-free, sterling plated magnetic closure that locks in for ease and extra security. Bakelite is a vintage, early plastic that was invented in Yonkers, NY by chemist Leo Baekeland in 1907. It is no longer made, and this guitar pick is from a limited supply of vintage stock. Today, Bakelite is prized for its patina and is considered highly collectible. I have this sized guitar pick charm in 3 colors (pictured above); rust, dark olive and black. This piece is available with 2.5mm black round matte leather (pictured) or slightly thicker 3mm round matte black leather if you prefer. Both are made with lead free dye. I'm also happy to make it on 3mm vegan suede microfiber if you prefer.
